New Schedule, New Events Pump Excitement into King of Dirt Series

New Hampshire, Albany-Saratoga increase prestige for KOD Crate Modified Series

RUTLAND, Vt. – The King of Dirt Series is ready for 2020.  A new feeling of excitement has been pumped into the tour, and the new, highly anticipated, five-race King of Dirt Racing (KOD) Crate Modified Series schedule will bring the tour to four prestigious tracks in New York and New England.

King of Dirt Racing features the wildly popular Sportsman-type dirt Modified stock car and the economical General Motors “602” crate engine package.  KOD events are among the highest-paying Sportsman-level races in the Northeast, and every event on the five-race slate is a highlight.  The KOD schedule is kept short by design, offering an affordable touring series alternative for grassroots dirt track racers.

The season opens at the fast, half-mile Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., for the fourth consecutive year, running the 50-lap “Memorial Day Kickoff” on Sunday night, May 24.  Bobby Hackel earned $1,750 for winning the 2019 edition, and drivers received a minimum of $150 to take the green flag.  Devil’s Bowl also hosts the second KOD event on Sunday, August 9, as the 40-lap “Leon Gonyo Memorial” is again held in conjunction with the “Battle at the Bowl” Big Block/Small Block Modified Challenge.

The month of September will be one of the most memorable runs in King of Dirt Racing history, as a three-week stretch of major events wraps up the calendar.

The Flat Track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., will hold its first-ever dirt Modified race on Friday, September 11, during “Full Throttle Dirt.”  The new 0.25-mile dirt track will host KOD for a 40-lap, $2,000-to-win race, along with USAC Midgets and the Sprint Cars of New England.  Full Throttle Dirt is part of a jam-packed Full Throttle Fall Weekend featuring short-track racing action with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the ARCA Menards Series East, American-Canadian Tour Late Models, and the Granite State Legends Cars.

The prestigious 50-lap “Northeast Crate Nationals” will be held at the legendary Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway on Saturday, September 19, in support of the high-profile “Fonda 200” Modified race.  The Nationals race has grown to become King of Dirt Racing’s signature event and will be run for the 11th time in 2020.  Tim Hartman Jr. collected $2,000 for his third career Nationals win last fall.

Finally, the 2020 championship will be decided at KOD’s momentous return to Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., on Friday, September 25.  The “Great Race Place” has hosted more King of Dirt events than any other track, and the return to the 0.4-mile oval is a key addition for the tour.  The KOD curtain-closer comes during the second annual “Malta Massive Weekend,” which also includes the new Street Stock Six Pack Series championship finale on Friday and the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds on Saturday.

King of Dirt Racing promoter Mike Bruno expects the new schedule to fuel a competitive season with big stages for the drivers to compete on. “We are so excited to get the King of Dirt schedule rolling in 2020,” Bruno said.  “The schedule is manageable for racers, and the races are all part of big, meaningful events.  I’m honored that KOD will be making history at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and I’m thrilled to be back at Albany-Saratoga.  The events at Fonda and Devil’s Bowl in 2019 were outstanding, too.  I appreciate the relationships and support that we’ve built with the track promoters as an independent series, and we’re looking forward to giving the race teams a great tour.”

King of Dirt Racing Headed for History at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

LOUDON, N.H. – King of Dirt Racing will make history in the Granite State in 2020.  The Flat Track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) will host the King of Dirt Racing (KOD) Crate Modified Series under the lights on Friday, September 11 as part of Full Throttle Dirt, marking the first-ever dirt Modified stock car race on the 0.25-mile flat track.

The two-day Full Throttle Fall Weekend, including Full Throttle Dirt, offers a wide variety of racing on four different track layouts, and the KOD race promises to be one of the most prestigious events in the series’ history.  The 40-lap feature race will pay $2,000-to-win, $200 to start, and offers a guaranteed $100 in tow money to drivers who do not qualify for the feature.  The USAC Dirt Midget Association and the Sprint Cars of New England will also be in action on Friday night at The Flat Track.

The famous 1.058-mile paved “Magic Mile” takes center stage on Saturday, September 12, with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Musket 200 presented by Whelen and championship finales for the all-new ARCA Menards Series East and the American-Canadian Tour Late Models.  The Granite State Legend Cars are also racing both days, on the 0.95-mile modified road course on Friday afternoon and the 0.25-mile mini oval on Saturday morning.

The Flat Track is located directly behind the North East Motor Sports Museum on New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s 1,200-acre facility in Loudon, N.H. and first opened in June 2019.  Exciting improvements are already underway for 2020 which will include added track width, banking in the corners, and 2,000 yards of new natural clay surface trucked in from Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vermont.

The addition of KOD to the Full Throttle Weekend has been almost a year in the making.

“We are excited to enhance our Full Throttle Weekend with events at The Flat Track, including King of Dirt Modifieds, to add even more racing action for our fans,” said David McGrath, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  “We can’t wait to bring new fans and new racers here from New England, New York, Canada, and beyond, and to give our longtime fans a thrilling new race to be a part of.”

King of Dirt Racing officials anticipate a competitive event at NHMS and an influx of Sportsman Modified racers from Vermont, New Hampshire, and elsewhere to join the KOD regulars from New York and Vermont; the event will be KOD’s first in the state of New Hampshire and the farthest east that tour will have ever traveled.

“The timing for this race is great in 2020,” said King of Dirt Racing promoter Mike Bruno. “KOD has great momentum, and New Hampshire Motor Speedway is the largest racing facility in New England, so The Flat Track is the perfect place to bring our exciting dirt track action to.  The new clay from Devil’s Bowl will make a great surface at The Flat Track, and we’re looking forward to something totally new and different.”

The Full Throttle Dirt event is race number three of five on the 2020 King of Dirt Racing Crate Modified Series schedule.  Other events will be held in New York State at Albany-Saratoga Speedway and Fonda Speedway, along with two events at Devil’s Bowl in Vermont.  Bobby Hackel of Rensselaer, N.Y., won his first King of Dirt Racing championship in 2019.

Michael Scorzelli Excited to Return to Stafford for Call Before You Dig Pro Late Model 81

(Stafford Springs, CT)—With his last race at Stafford Speedway coming in the Fall Final of 2015, Pro Late Model driver Michael Scorzelli is looking forward to the Inaugural Call before You Dig Pro Late Model Open 81 on May 29.  Scorzelli was a Stafford Late Model regular from 2013-2015 and his prior track experience was a major factor in Scorzelli adding the race to his 2020 schedule for his #18 Syracuse Utilities Chevrolet team.

“We’re really looking forward to the race,” said Scorzelli.  “I had nothing but good experiences at Stafford, I have a few wins there, and Bob Fill has things pretty well figured out with our chassis so we’re all pretty excited.  This was one of the first races that we put on our 2020 schedule as soon as the Stafford schedule came out and we saw they were going to be hosting this race.  One of the biggest reasons why we’re looking forward to Stafford is I run better on the larger tracks like Stafford, Thompson, and Loudon.  With the runs we’ve had at Stafford and the competition we faced in the past, I think we can do pretty well.  I’m hoping we can race at Stafford once or twice a year every year.  I have to thank my sponsors Syracuse Utilities and BNC Motorsports, Bob Fill for setting the car up, and we just hooked up with Larry’s Auto Machine so we’re looking forward to what we can do with their engines.”

After changing engine builders to Larry’s Auto Machine in the off-season, Scorzelli is anxious to see how his new engine combination will work in his #18 car and he is hoping to carry the momentum he gained at the end of the 2019 Granite State ProStock Series into the CBYD Pro Late Model 81.

“We needed to have a sealed motor for this race so we have a new engine and new transmission to put into the car and pretty much everything except for the frame is new on our car,” said Scorzelli.  “We ran 6 or 7 Granite State races last year and I think we figured some things out towards the end of the season.  We have good equipment and we’re heading in the right direction with our car so we’re hoping that can carry all of that over to the 2020 season.”

Scorzelli raced three full seasons in Stafford’s Late Model division from 2013-2015, scoring two wins and a best finish of fourth in the points standings in 2014.  While Scorzelli will be leaning on his previous experience to help get a leg up on the competition, he isn’t the only driver on the entry list with a Stafford background to lean on.

“I think it’s going to be a tremendous mix of drivers between modified drivers who have raced a lot at Stafford versus Late Model guys like Cory Casagrande who has a lot of Stafford experience, Ray Christian, who is good whatever track he goes to, Devin O’Connell is always fast in the Super Late Models, and Mike O’Sullivan is going to be tough,” said Scorzelli.  “I don’t think Ray or Devin have any laps around the big track at Stafford but that doesn’t seem to slow them down at all.  I’ve seen them both go to tracks they’ve never been to before and they qualify and race up front.  I’m sure more of the Granite State drivers will be joining the field along with some modified regulars so it should be an interesting race.”

With 2 Stafford Late Model wins to his credit, Scorzelli knows what it takes to win a race at Stafford and he would like nothing more than to add a third Stafford win to his racing resume.

“I think we have a shot at winning the race if we can stay out of trouble and take care of the car,” said Scorzelli.  “We have some laps at Stafford so we’re comfortable there but a lot of the other guys have the same experience level.  To win the first race in a Super Late Model since the PASS cars were at Stafford, it would be one of the biggest wins I’ve ever been a part of.”

With a tire compound for the Inaugural CBYD Pro Late Model 81 still to be determined, Scorzelli feels like handling characteristics will play a major factor in who is able to come away with the checkered flag.

“Stafford is a super fast track and in order to win you’ll have to play it smart for 81 laps,” said Scorzelli.  “I’m not quite sure what tires we’re going to be using for the race but you’ll have to have patience and conserve the tires to be there at the end.  If we can be there at the end of the race, that’s where things happen.  The motors we have are probably slightly less than what the Late Model cars at Stafford run but it’s all about handling with our cars.  The shock package and setup in your car is what’s going to carry you through the race.”

Scorzelli and the Pro Late Model field will take to the track for the CBYD 811 Pro LM Open on Friday, May 29.  For more information, visit www.staffordspeedway.com, checkout Stafford Speedway on Facebook or Twitter, or contact the track office at 860-684-2783.

Joey Doiron crowned 2019 GSPSS Champion

The Granite State Pro stock Series officially brought its 2019 season to a close on Saturday February 22, at the Thompson Speedway Motor Sports Park clubhouse. The season ending banquet of champions was a chance for the teams of the GSPSS to get together one last time as part of the 2019 season and honor their champion.

Joey Doiron and his team were officially crowned champions for the 2019 season and at the end of the night they took home the champions check worth $4000.00, the largest in series history. In addition New England Race Fuels and Sunoco gave Doiron a champion’s jacket and American Racer outfitted both Joey and his car owner / father with Jackets to commemorate their achievement. Doiron graciously thanked series president Mike Parks, the series officials and each of his team members individually. He then thanked his wife, kids, mom and finally his father as he got emotional talking about all the years they shared leading up to this championship. Doiron not only took the Championship but $500.00 from crazy Horse Racing for setting fast time in time trials an amazing five out of eleven times, far more than any other competitor.

In addition to crowning the champions, a number of specialty awards were handed out. Bobby Pelland and youngster Jake Matheson were crowned co- AR Bodies rookies of the year as both teams had successful first Granite State Pro Stock Series seasons. For winning the rookie title they were each awarded a $1000.00 certificates from AR bodies.

Also given out was the annual John “Boy” Hoyt memorial dedication to motor sports award. This award is given to someone who goes above and beyond for the sport of auto racing. The 2019 award winner was Barry Gray in honor of his unwavering dedication to, and support of the series. Gray, the 2016 series champion, was humbled and nearly speechless as he received his plaque.

There were a number of contingency awards given out starting with two AR Bodies gift certificates that went to Ray Christian III and 2017 series champion Devin O’Connell. O’Reilly Auto Parts donated $600.00 worth of gift cards with four teams getting $150.00 each. The teams of Luke Hinkley, Bobby Pelland, Joey Doiron and Barry Gray each had their numbers pulled. All the names went back in the hat and Barry Gray was instructed to pull the winner of a brand new VDL carburetor and he pulled his own number twenty nine.

The final group to be honored were the top ten in points, seven of whom were in attendance to receive their trophy’s, point fund money and be honored by their fellow competitors. Along with Doiron, Ray Christian III, Devin O’Connell and Jimmy Renfrew Jr were recognized for their top five point’s position. Josh King wound up in fifth in the point standings but a last minute work emergency forced him to miss the banquet. Also in attendance were sixth through eighth place point’s finishers Luke Hinkley, Bobby Pelland and Mike Mitchell who received trophys and point fund checks.

Brisco takes the NASCAR Xfinity race at Las Vegas

2 2019 Chasebriscoe 550x440

Chase Brisco

The Xfinity and Cup teams will head even further west next weekend to compete in Fontana, Calif., at Auto Club Speedway for Round Three of the 2020 season. The Truck teams will take the next two weeks off and hook back up with the other series at Atlanta in mid-March.

We’ll see you back here Sept. 25-27 when all three series teams return to do battle for their respective championships.

6:55 pm – Brisco Wins the Boyd Gaming 300 – Chase Briscoe made it look easy, beating Austin Cindric to the checkers by 2.5 seconds to score his third career Xfinity Series victory. Briscoe led five times for 89 laps, including the final 36 circuits. Briscoe took the lead after a round of green flag pit stops and never looked back.

“That was really a team win,” said Briscoe. “As soon as the sun went down, it seemed like in dirty air, we just weren’t very. In clean air, obviously, there at the end, we were really good.”

Cindric led five times for 39 laps and was driving the only other Ford in the field.

“It seemed like as it cooled off a little bit, we got a little too tight and didn’t quite keep up with adjustments. But overall, we had a great night. It’s always great to race your best friend for the win but you hate to see him beat you.”

Ryan Sieg, Noah Gragson and Harrison Burton rounded out the top five.

6:35 pm – Briscoe Wins the Boyd Gaming 300 – Chase Briscoe made it look easy, beating Austin Cindric to the checkers by 2.5 seconds to score his third career Xfinity Series victory.

6:30 pm – 10 Laps to Go – We have just 10 laps to go and Briscoe continues to lead Cindric by 1.5 seconds. Sieg is running 3rd, 5.3 seconds back and Gragson is 4th, another 1.5 second behind Sieg. This looks like Briscoe’s race to lose unless we have a late caution.

6:19 pm – Briscoe to the Lead – Briscoe takes the lead from Cindric on that restart, while Allgaier moves up to 3rd. We have 27 laps to go.

6:17 pm – Back to Green – After pit stops, Briscoe is now leading Cindric. Sieg, Allgaier and Burton round out the top 5. Restarting 6th-10th are Jones, Herbst, Gragson, Annett, Chastain

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 23) — Prior to Sunday, absolutely nothing had gone wrong for six-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. this season. He swept through the NHRA opener in Pomona, Calif., two weeks ago with the quickest racecar of every qualifying and elimination round on the way to his 64th career Pro Stock victory. It looked like this weekend’s NHRA Arizona Nationals would be a repeat performance, with Coughlin once again leading the three qualifying sessions that were held, locking up his 34th career low qualifier honor in his JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. But alas, a minor malfunction in his powerplant during Sunday’s quarterfinal round of eliminations ended his perfect start. “We’ve had a helluva run to kick off the season but we had a quirky little thing bite us today so we’ll just reset and start over,” Coughlin said. “There’s absolutely no reason to think we can’t get right back where we were right away. We checked everything out and it was just a small miss, which can easily be fixed.” After crushing rookie teammate Marty Robinson in the opening round with a 6.535 at 210.11 mph to Robinson’s 6.634 at 206.67 mph, Coughlin was lined up against another Elite Motorsports driver, Alex Laughlin, in the second session. But after a huge .033-second head-start, Coughlin felt something going wrong. “I could sense a small miss right when we launched and it got bigger and bigger and the car started getting heavier and harder, but for a moment I didn’t see him so I kept my foot in it,” Coughlin said. “About that time, he went flying by me and I decided to give up the chase and not hurt the engine. As it turns out, I could have legged it out without damaging anything but I wouldn’t have caught Alex. “The good news is our other teammate Erica Enders went on to win the race outright so we are two-for-two with Elite and that’s really exciting. All of the Elite cars are looking very fast. Congrats to the reigning champ on her big win.” Always anxious to race, Coughlin will compete at the Drag Illustrated World Doorslammer Nationals presented by Elite Motorsports, March 6-8, in Orlando, Fla., before returning to NHRA action with the Amalie Motor Oil Gatornationals, March 13-15, in Gainesville, Fla. “From what I understand, most of top Pro Stock and Pro Mod cars from the NHRA are headed to Orlando so that’ll be a fun weekend,” Coughlin said. “Our team owner, Richard Freeman, and his group are involved as sponsors and the race is offering up a $50,000 top prize in each class so everyone will be geared up for that event.”
