Robie and Leary find Victory lane of the first time this season: Stebbins repeats and Keniston get his first win at Monadnock!
By Ryan Lawliss
Winchester, NH: Monadnock Speedway returned to action after a successful Spring Dash 2018. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series was filled with action as the lightning stocks and young guns joined the racing card. Brian Robie captured his first feature win in the Sportsman Modified division this season. Tyler Leary took the win in the Super Stocks after missing practice. Mike Stebbins won his second race in a row in the Mini Stocks. Leon Keniston got his first ever win at Monadnock Speedway after trying for 10 years in the Lightning Stocks. Chloe Wright won her first Young Guns feature of the season.
The Young Guns took to the track for the first feature of the night. Nathan Wenzel in the 03 would lead the field to the green. Wenzel would lead early but would get loose coming out of turn 4 a few laps in and Chloe Wright in the 17 would seize the opportunity to take the lead. Taylor Striebel in the 57 and Cooper Roberge in the 96 would also use the slip up by Wenzel to gain position on the track. By lap 10 Wright had a commanding lead. The first caution of the race would fly on lap 11 for the 28 of Sammy Silva coming to rest on the top of turn 2 after losing a tire. On the restart Wright would lead the field to the green. But before the field could get going the caution would fly again for a spinning 03VT of Elijah Castillo. Wright would lead the field to the green again, this time jumping out to a commanding lead right away. Striebel would take commend of 2nd on the restart. Roberge would feel pressure from the 12c of Chris Sontag.
Wright would hold on to take the win. Striebel would finish 2nd and with a last lap pass Sontag finished 3rd. In victory lane Wright was all business as she was focused on next week. Wright did touch on her missing the feature last week due to transmission problems and was thankful for the hard work of her team during the week to get her back onto the track this year.
Lightning Stocks were on the track next with the hope of electrifying the crowd; Erin Aiken in the 33 and the 13k of Leon Keniston brought up the front row. Aiken and Keniston would bring the field to the green but before a lap could be completed the caution would fly as the 69x of Josh Carey would spin on the backstretch after making contacting with a few other cars. Aiken and Keniston again would bring the field to the green. Aiken and Keniston would go side by side into turn one but it would be Keniston that would lead lap 1. Aiken would settle into the 2ndspot but would soon feel pressure from the 603 of Matt Gauffin. Gauffin would take over the 2nd spot on lap 6. By this point in the race Keniston would have a ½ a straightway lead over Gauffin. Keniston would hold on to win the race. Gauffin finished 2nd and Aiken held on to finish 3rd. Keniston stopped at the start finish line and instead of the standard victory lap, Keniston took a jog down the fence line to share the win with the fans in the stands! Keniston was extremely relieved to finally get a win at “the Dawg” as he said it has been something on his list for some time.
The next feature on the track would be the 25 lap Mini Stock feature. Jaret Curtis in the 33 and the 69 of Louis Maher brought the field to the green but just like the lightning stocks feature the caution would fly before the first lap was even completed. Maher and Curtis would battle side by side thru turns 1 and 2 before Maher would take control of the top spot. Maher would lead until Lap 6 when Mike Stebbins drove his #66 machine past Maher like he wasn’t even there. Stebbins pulled away from the field and would run away with his 2nd win of the season. The show would be the battle between Maher and Curtis for the 2nd spot. Curtis would try everything he could to get around Maher but would not prevail. Maher would hold on to finish 2nd, while Curtis would settle for 3rd after missing last week’s race due to engine trouble and running his back-up car after the motor in his primary car expired during practice. Stebbins was an extremely happy man in victory lane. Stebbins noted that the car still has room for improvement.
Sportsman Modifieds roared onto the track next for their 35 lap feature. Joel Monahan in the 03 and Rookie driver Mark Hayward in the 77 would make up the front row to start the race. Monahan would lead the first 2 laps before a caution on lap 2 as the 66 of Ray Sherrick made hard contact with the backstretch wall and would require help from A Plus Towing and the infield crew to get off the track. On the restart Monahan would be joined by the 25 of Brian Robie. Monahan would resume the lead on the restart. The caution would fly on lap 14 for Hayward spinning. It would be determined that Hayward had a little help in spinning out and would be joined at the back of the field by the 98 of Tyler Jarvenpaa. Monahan and Robie would be on the front row for the restart again but this time Robie would best Monahan to take the lead. Monahan would settle into the 2nd spot. The battle would be for the 3rd spot between the 99 of Kim Rivet and the 8 of Keith Carzello. Rivet and Carzello would battle that lasted multiple laps. For numerous laps the 2nd thru 5th place cars would be running nose to tail until lap 27 when Monahan got a little loose coming out of turn 4 allowing Rivet and Carzello to get around him. At lap 30 Robie had a commanding lead as Rivet (running in 2nd) and Carzello (running in 3rd) gave chase.
The last caution of the race would fly on lap 32 for the 50 of Matt Kimball spinning out. With fewer than 5 laps to go the field would restart single file. Robie would lead the last 3 laps to take the win. Rivet finished 2ndfollowed by Carzello in 3rd. In victory lane Robie talked about the struggle of the first race and how happy he was to get the first win of the season out of the way this early. Robie stated he is hopeful that he can build on this finish.
To end the night the Super Stocks would run their 25 lap feature. Marc Curtis in the 27 and Justin Littlewood in the 37 sat on the front row. Marc Curtis took the lead at the drop of the green. Justin Littlewood wouldn’t be able to drop in for 2nd as he would be challenged by the 33 of Solomon Brow. Justin Littlewood and Brow would go back and forth until Brow prevailed on lap 3 to take the 2nd spot. The caution would fly on lap 6 for 26 of Chris Curtis spinning into the infield after making slight contact with Littlewood’s rear panel. Marc Curtis and Brow brought the field back to racing. Tyler Leary in the 11x utilized the restart to take the 2nd spot from Brow. Leary would then set his sights on Marc Curtis and on Lap 15 Leary was able to get around Marc Curtis. The caution would on fly on lap 16 again. Leary and Marc Curtis found themselves on the front row for the restart. The 02 of Geoff Rollins restarted 3rd. Leary took the lead on the restart and Rollins would use the restart to get around Marc Curtis. Marc Curtis would battle Brow the rest of the way for the 3rd spot. Brow would use a lap last pass to take the 3rd spot. Rollins would finish 2nd and Leary took his first win of the season. Leary who missed practice was very pleased with the win. Leary noted after the race that he lost radio contact with his spotter on lap 1. Leary was happy that he was able to use the heat race as a practice as he had a minor motor skip that his team was able to take care of.

Tyler Dippel sweeps the weekend at Langley
Charges to NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Win
HAMPTON, Va. — Tyler Dippel had to earn this one.
The 18-year-old Wallkill, New York native completed the weekend sweep, winning his second career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race on Saturday night at Langley Speedway after being quickest in both practice sessions and starting on the pole for the Visit Hampton VA 150.
Dippel was able to hold off eventual second-place finisher Anthony Alfredo in a five-lap shootout to cross the finish line 1.212 seconds ahead of the Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate.
Although Dippel started and ended up front, the NASCAR Next graduate spent the first 75 laps at the rear.
Dippel, along with eventual third-place finisher and DGR-Crosley teammate Tyler Ankum, fell to the rear immediately after the green flag flew, opting to save their tires for the second half of the 150-lap event.
The No. 54 TyCar Trenchless Technologies/D&A Concrete Toyota ran around 13th-place for most of the first half of the race and was able to stay in front of then-leader Marcos Gomes and remain on the lead lap. Along with the majority of the field, they opted to stay out under the halfway caution.
Slowly and methodically, Dippel worked his way up into the top five. And before long, he was watching Ankrum challenge Alfredo for the lead.
With 11 laps to go, Ankrum squeezed underneath Alfredo for the top spot, before giving it right back in turn one the ensuing lap after overshooting the corner.
That allowed Dippel to close in on Alfredo’s bumper. He made quick work of the Ridgefield, Connecticut, and was scored the leader when the final caution came out moments later when Ankrum spun as he attempted to pass Alfredo once again.
Dippel rocketed clear of Alfredo on the final restart and was able to cruise to Victory Lane for the first time since 2016 (Mobile) and first time in his career at Langley.
“Man, I mean it was just unreal,” Dippel said in Victory Lane. “Honestly, if it went green, I didn’t know if we were going to get him. But then we caught lapped traffic and that kind of helped us there. We got really, really loose on that run there and we were able to play with our fans under caution. And after that we just checked out after the caution.”
After finishing ninth at New Smyrna and sixth at Bristol earlier this season, Dippel was relieved to finally earn the victory that seemed to elude him this season.
“What a weekend. I can’t thank all my guys enough, all the people that stick behind me,” said Dippel, who recently joined DGR Crosley. “My mom and dad, D&A Concrete, just everyone. It feels so good to be back here. I can’t thank the DGR guys enough. I think we’re just getting started here at DGR. I can’t wait for the rest of the year.”
Alfredo was pleased to get a well-deserved finish after coming home 24th at New Smyrna and 18th at Bristol. But wished things fell differently for him as the laps wound down.
“We caught a lot of lapped traffic there, and unfortunately, not all of them got out of the way when we needed them to,” Alfredo said. “They were too busy racing each other to realize the leaders were racing each other right behind them. That kind of helped them catch up to us there. And then the caution fell at the end when we about had the race won if it weren’t for that.
“But we had a really strong run and I’m proud of our effort. The guys worked hard all weekend, they always do. We knew we were capable of winning races and we ran up front the first two races of the year but unfortunately we’ve been take out of circumstances that weren’t of our own doing, so we haven’t really had the end results that show what we’re capable of. But to have a good run tonight is solid nonetheless and a little bit refreshing.”
Ankrum’s finishes this season keep getting better. Fifth at New Smyrna, fourth at Bristol and now a third at Langley. But having the lead in his grasp at the end made this a tough one to swallow.
“We got a good restart on the outside lane after that last caution with about five to go, and that helped me get to third,” Ankrum said of the closing laps. “I couldn’t get to Alfredo enough. Barely lost it by half a car length. Hard racing, no hard feelings, really. It sucks, but it’s part of short-track racing. We had the best car and I felt like we were the fastest guys all weekend.”
Dillon Bassett and Grant Quinlan rounded out the top five, with Colin Garrett, Connor Hall, Chase Cabre, Ryan Vargas and Ruben Garcia Jr. completing the top 10.
The Visit Hampton VA 150 will air on NBCSN on Thursday, May 3 at 11 p.m. ET.
The K&N Pro Series East will return to the track in two weeks in at South Boston Speedway for the Who’s Your Driver Twin 100s on Saturday May 12 at 7 p.m. ET.

Rocco, Reen and Rufrano score NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler Sunday feature victories At Stafford Motor Speedway
(Stafford Springs, CT)—Stafford Motor Speedway’s 47th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler® Weekend continued on Sunday, April 29 with feature events for the SK Modified®, Late Model, and SK Light divisions. Scoring wins were Keith Rocco in the SK Modified® feature, Glen Reen in the Late Model feature, and Marcello Rufrano in the SK Light feature.
In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Keith Rocco took the lead at the green with Michael Christopher, Jr., Eric Berndt, and Glen Reen briefly going 3-wide before Christopher took second with Berndt to his outside and Reen on his back bumper in fourth. Ronnie Williams was fifth behind Reen. Berndt slid back several spots to sixth as Reen moved into third, Williams into fourth, and Rowan Pennink took over fifth on lap-3. The caution came out with 5 laps complete for Troy Talman and Stephen Kopcik with Kopcik spinning on the frontstretch after a flat right rear tire.
Rocco took the lead back under green with Reen providing heavy pressure to his back bumper for the lead. Pennink was up to third behind Reen and he was also looking for the lead. But the caution came out with 6 laps complete for spins in turn 3 by Tyler Jones, John Catania, and Tony Membrino, Jr.
Rocco and Reen resumed their duel for the lead on the restart with Pennink in third but the field was only able to complete one more lap before the caution came back out for Membrino, who came to a stop against the turn 2 wall.
Rocco took the lead on the restart with Reen slotting into second just in front of Pennink but the caution came back out with 8 laps complete for spins by Matt Vassar and Jones.
Rocco took the lead back under green with Reen again able to slot himself into second. Pennink was third but Christopher, Jr. took the spot on lap-9 with Jeff Baral up to fifth behind Pennink. Joey Cipriano was sixth with Williams, Todd Owen, Cory DiMatteo, and Tyler Hines making up the top-10. Reen was applying heavy pressure to Rocco for the lead while Pennink was looking high and low for a way around Christopher. Pennink’s car dropped off the pace on lap-14 and the caution came out with 14 laps complete as he limped back to pit road. Pennink would rejoin the race after making the pit stop.
The caution came out on the restart for a spin in turn 1 by David Arute with the car of Vassar put to the rear for contact. Rocco took the lead on the next restart with Christopher, Jr. pulling alongside and then taking second from Reen. Christopher, Jr. made a move for the lead in turn 3 on lap-15 and touched tires with Rocco, but everyone was able to keep going with Rocco keeping the lead and Reen getting around Christopher, Jr. for second. Baral was up to fourth with Williams in fifth. The order was the same when the caution flew with 26 laps complete for a spin on the backstretch by Owen.
Rocco took the lead on the restart while Reen got loose in turn 2 which allowed Christopher, Jr. to charge into second. Kopcik was recovered from his early race flat tire and he took third with Williams fourth and Reen falling back to fifth. Cipriano was sixth with Michael Gervais, Jr. seventh, Arute eighth, Berndt ninth and Chase Dowling tenth. The caution came back out with 33 laps complete as Kopcik got into the backstretch wall after something on his car broke and then spun in turn 3 with a flat tire which also collected Arute and Berndt.
The restart saw Christopher, Jr. get a great jump and he surged into the lead, but behind him Robert Palmer almost got into the turn 1 wall which brought the caution out before a melee erupted in turn 3 that involved Baral, Owen, and several other cars. This put Rocco back out front for the restart with Christopher, Jr. to his outside and Williams and Reen in the second row.
The restart saw another caution come out for a spin on the backstretch by Joey Cipriano that collected Tom Bolles. Rocco took the lead on the next restart with Williams taking second. Christopher, Jr. was third with Reen fourth and Gervais in fifth. The caution came back out with 37 laps complete for a spin in turn 3 by Dowling and Josh Wood.
Rocco took the lead on the restart with Christopher, Jr. taking second. Williams slotted into third with Reen fourth and Matt Galko fifth. Rocco held Christopher, Jr. off to the checkered flag to pick up the first SK Modified® feature win of the 2018 season. Williams finished third with Reen and Galko rounding out the top-5.
Following post race inspection, the cars of Michael Christohper, Jr. and Glen Reen were found to be 11 and 4 pounds underweight respectively and they were each penalized one position per pound underweight, dropping Reen to eighth and Christopher, Jr. to 13th. The new top-5 is Rocco, Williams, Galko, Gervais, and Tyler Hines.
In the 30-lap Late Model feature, Michael Bennett and Tom Fearn were side by side for the lead at the drop of the green but the caution came out before a caution could be completed as a 3-wide situation in turn 4 saw Paul Arute and Kevin Gambacorta spin with Michael Wray taking also involved.
The field completed one lap before the caution flew for a spin in turn 3 by Kyle Casagrande. Bennett and Fearn came together on the frontstretch with Bennett’s race finished while Fearn was able to continue. This put Darrell Keane and Mike Quintiliano on the front row for the restart.
Keane took the lead on the restart while Glen Reen drifted up the track in turn 2 and fell back to eighth in the running order. Quintiliano was second behind Keane with Chase Cook in third. Cook would lose the spot to Wayne Coury, Jr. with Tyler Leary making up the top-5. The caution flew with 6 laps complete for a spin in turn 2 between Coury and Cook.
Keane took the lead back under green but the caution came back out for spins in turn 3 by Arute and Al Saunders. Keane took the lead again on the restart with Quintiliano in second. Leary was up to third with Gambacorta back up to fourth and Mike Mordino was fifth. Coury took fifth from Mordino on lap-9 and Mordino then spun into the turn 3 wall after contact with Reen to bring the caution back out. Reen was sent to the rear of the field for the contact.
The restart saw Larry Vassar spin on the frontstretch to bring the yellow right back out. Keane took the lead on the next restart with Gambacorta moving into second. Gambacorta would then fall back to sixth place as Leary moved into second, Coury third, Fearn fourth, and Arute fifth.
Fearn made a move for third to get by Coury on lap-13 as Keane continued to lead the race. A 3-wide move in turn 3 saw Arute, Gambacorta, and Cook go around in turn 3 in synchronized spin with Wray and Quintiliano also involved to bring the caution out with 14 laps complete.
Keane took the lead again on the restart with Fearn, Reen, Leary, and Casagrande lined up behind him. Cook had damage to his car and he was black flagged on lap-17. The caution came out one lap later for a spin by Casagrande in turn 1 that saw Shawn Thibeault get parked for the remainder of the event for making contact with Casagrande.
Keane took the lead back under green with Reen taking second from Fearn. Fearn was third with Leary in fourth and Quintiliano in fifth. Fearn took a look under Reen for second, but Reen was able to fend off his challenge on lap-22.
With 5 laps to go, Reen and Fearn were right behind Keane in a 3 car fight for the lead with Quintiliano closing in on the lead trio. Keane drifted up the track in turn 2 on lap-29, which allowed Reen and Fearn to both get by and drop Keane back to third. Reen led Fearn to the checkered flag to win get his championship defense off to the best possible start. Quintiliano got by Keane on the last lap to take third with Coury rounding out the top-5.
In the 20-lap SK Light feature, Andrew Molleur streaked into the lead at the green, going around polesitter Geoff Nooney. Todd Douillard also got by Nooney to take second with Nooney, Mark Bakaj, and Brett Gonyaw making up the top-5.
With 4 laps complete, Molleur was out front with Douillard and Nooney side by side for second and Bakaj and Gonyaw side by side for fourth. Molleur was comfortable out front while Douillard settled into second with Gonyaw, Marcello Rufrano, Bakaj, and Bryan Narducci lined up in a single file line behind him as they hit the halfway point of the race. Narducci was on a charge after starting deep in the field and he took third from Douillard on lap-12 with Rufrano just ahead of him in second and Molleur continuing to lead the race. Narducci then took second from Rufrano on lap 13 before the caution came out with 13 laps complete as Ed Chicoski and Rit Dulac spun through the frontstretch grass.
Molleur took the lead on the restart but by tth time the cars hit turn 4, Rufrano had taken the lead from Molleur with Narducci in third, Gonyaw fourth, and Bakaj fifth. Narducci got around Molleur for second but he couldn’t catch Rufrano before the checkered flag as Rufrano started the SK Light season off with a win. Molleur finished third with Gonyaw and Bakaj rounding out the top-5.

Mees, Mischler Shine Bright at AFT Texas Half-Mile: Morris Connecticut’s Ken Coolbeth fails to answer the bell!
To view this email as a web page, go here |
FORT WORTH, Texas (April 28, 2018) – Defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees earned some much-needed redemption while AFT Singles rising star Morgen Mischler earned his first professional win in a drama-filled night of American Flat Track racing at Texas Motor Speedway for the Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys Texas Half Mile presented by Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda.
That drama was effectively guaranteed even before the day’s racing activities began, coming only one day following the announcement that Mees had been disqualified and stripped of his win at the previous round in Atlanta for using a chemically altered tire.
But the twists only stacked up from there. The entire evening program was loaded with thrills and spills, the implication of which are almost certain to be felt throughout the remainder of the 2018 title fight. Big name after big name was eliminated from competition even prior to the Main, including Mees’ fellow Indian Wrecking Crew members Brad Baker and Bryan Smith.
Baker went down hard in his Heat and could not continue, and then Smith lost the front in Semi 1, initiating a spectacular, multi-rider incident that also collected Jake Johnson and Stevie Bonsey, who was launched several feet into the air in terrifying fashion. Adding more drama, Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., of Morris, Conn., – the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines points leader coming into the weekend – simply failed to make the Main, finishing outside the top nine in Semi 2.
Meanwhile, Mees hardly put a wheel wrong aboard his Indian Scout FTR750 all night long. He was momentarily squeezed out at the start of the Main, briefly dropping to third, but he systematically worked his way past Chad Cose and early leader Briar Bauman to grab the lead. Once established in front, Mees was in complete control of the contest to the checkered flag.
The triumph was a double dosage of redemption for the defending champ; Mees finished second in Texas last year – the only time in the most recent seven Half-Miles in which he failed to stand atop the podium.
After the race Mees said, “First off, thoughts and prayers to all the downed riders. I don’t know the condition of any of them, but we had a lot of downed riders tonight and nobody wants to see that. [All riders were reported to be awake and alert afterward.] On my end, we just came out and were really focused on getting this win, and we made it happen. We were fast right out of the gate. Huge hats off to my entire team for just sticking behind me and making it happen for me week-in and week-out. The Indian motorcycle is a phenomenal bike for me.”
Zanotti Racing ace Bauman came home second while Cose held onto third aboard his Indian Motorcycle of Oklahoma City Scout FTR750 to earn his first-ever AFT Twins podium.
And just like that, Mees is back in a familiar position – leading the AFT Twins championship table with 50 points – despite his Atlanta DQ. Henry Wiles, who finished fifth tonight, is second, followed by Bauman in third.
Earlier in AFT Singles action, Morgen Mischler narrowly fended off a hard-charging Shayna Texter to secure his first-career professional victory by a scant 0.094 seconds. At the start, Texter slashed her way forward aboard her Husqvarna FC 450, picking off several rivals on a track where most struggled to overtake. However, she could not quite find a way past race-leader Mischler once she arrived on his rear wheel, no matter how desperately she tried.
Mischler rebuked numerous attempts by Texter, including – and most crucially – coming off the race’s final corner with his sideways Cycle Craft Yamaha YZ450F bucking and protesting all the way to the checkered flag. Texter was right there, close enough to take advantage, but Mischler’s swerving Yamaha blocked her from making the pass.
Mischler’s victory put to rest any lingering doubt he may have had regarding his skills to compete with, and beat, the best the AFT undercard has to offer. He said, “It’s one of those things – when you move up to the pro ranks, you ask yourself if you belong. On that last lap… it stepped out pretty good, but I just pinned it.”
Brandon Price rounded out the podium in third, taking over the AFT Singles points lead in the process as former championship leader Dan Bromley finished 17th.
