FRESH FROM FIRST MODIFIED TOUR WIN IN SOUTH CAROLINA, TOMMY CATALANO READIES FOR INDOOR RACING SERIES ALLENTOWN OPENER JANUARY 3-5 WITH NEW HOMEBUILT THREE QUARTER
Twenty year old Tommy Catalano, who recently scored his first Tour-Type Modified win in early November at Myrtle Beach, SC, is eagerly anticipating his return to the Indoor Auto Racing Series Fueled By VP Race Fuels events.
The first of three series races to be held on the concrete floors of arenas in three different states will be at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA. The Ironton Telephone sponsored events will be held on Friday and Saturday January 4th and 5th with complete programs including qualifying races and feature events both nights.
“I’ve won some pretty big races up north, but this is the first time I ever won in a Tour Modified,” Catalano, of Ontario, NY, said. “So this is a huge win for us. My next goal is to win an indoor TQ Midget event.”
Catalano and his family-owned team traveled 14 hours – each way – travel from suburban Buffalo, NY to Myrtle Beach to race. This past season they competed on both the Race of Champions and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours where he won the Rookie of the Year award.
Catalano, who has competed in the Indoor Auto Racing Series for the past several years, has something new up his sleeve for the 2019 season.
He has in the past has run both a Lafler chassis car and an experimental Tim Nye chassis. This car will be his first effort in a TQ Midget with ten, not 13, inch tires.
“I’m building a new car for the Indoor Series,” Catalano revealed. “A wide tire car. We think a 10 inch wide tire is the way to go.”
Catalano will breaking from the norm building a car based around the smaller wheels, something Andy Jankowiak used to win the series finale in Albany, N.Y. in February of 2018.
Though Series rules allow for two different types of wheels, a 10’ and a 13, the majority of the TQs in recent years have been 13’ wheel cars.
The young driver, a Rochester Institute Of Technology (RIT) student, has taken an active role in the development of the new TQ Midget.
Racing against as many as 60 rival drivers and teams, Catalano will be going to post in all three of the series races at Allentown, PA, Atlantic City, NJ and Syracuse, NY this winter.
Catalano and Jankowiak will be joined by several other Modified Touring Series regulars in pursuit of victory.
Heading the list will be Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, Long Island, NY, and the defending Series champion. Bonsignore is also the reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Touring Series champion and a winner in Allentown in 2018.
Timmy Solomito, a close friend of Bonsignore and a fellow competitor on the NASCAR Tour from Islip, NY. is also entered.
Timmy Catalano, Tommy’s younger brother, will also be an entrant. Timmy also competed on the Indoor series, the RoC circuit and in local Sport Modified in 2018.
Teenager Andrew Molleur of Shelton, CT., who ran in several NASCAR Whelen Modified and Tri Track Open Modified Series events late in 2018, is also fielding a car for the three-state series for a second season.
Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, NY is expected to once again be a point title contender. Rudolph, who finished second this season on the Super DIRTcar big-block Modified series, has won three Indoor Auto Racing Series titles. The Ransomville, N.Y. hot-shoe has five Indoor Series A-Main wins, second overall to the late Ted Christopher,
The Slingshots will join the TQ Midgets on Saturday’s docket and the Champ Karts will be part of Friday’s double-header. The two divisions will run qualifying races and feature events both nights.
Information, including ticket and hotel links, is available at indoorautoracing.com. Other information and select tickets to all event are available by calling the series office during regular working hours at 609-888-3618.
Tickets for the Allentown races are also available by calling 610-347-TIXX, or stopping at the PPL Center box office at 7th & Hamilton Street in Allentown. Those wishing to avoid online fees may purchase directly at the Box Office, but are encouraged to do so in advance to avoid possible box office lines the day of the event.
The Allentown Indoor Auto Racing race will be preceded by the second annual East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals, a non-point event, set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 13-15, 2018 inside the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, NJ.
Following the Ironton Telephone Allentown Indoor weekend, racing shifts to Atlantic City for the 17th running of NAPA Auto Parts Weekend, highlighted by the running of the prestigious TQ Midget Gamblers Classic. Event dates are Friday and Saturday, January 25-26, 2019
The final event of the Indoor Auto Racing Series Fueled By VP Race Fuels takes place at a new venue, the New York State Fairgrounds Exhibition Center in Syracuse, NY. on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, 2019.

Track Talk Column for Sat. 11/24/18
Track Talk
The 35th season of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will feature a mix of historic short tracks on the eastern seaboard as well as the second running of the 250-lap showcase event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
For the third straight season, the Whelen Modified Tour will kick off at South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway. The race on Saturday, March 1 will precede the return of the tour to Virginia’s South Boston Speedway.
Following the southern swing, the tour will kickoff the New England racing season as the headliner for a pair of landmark Connecticut race weekends: the 46th annual Icebreaker weekend at Thompson Motorsports Park on Sunday, April 7, and the 48th annual NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler on Sunday, April 28.
The 16-race tour calendar visits seven states and features the return to Wall Stadium Speedway in Wall Township, New Jersey. The tour has run three events at the high-banked third-mile oval, most recently in 2007.
“The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule celebrates some of most iconic eastern short tracks,” said Brandon Thompson, NASCAR managing director for regional racing. “It’s a nod to the old school NASCAR Modified division racing from Connecticut to Virginia competing for championship points and bragging rights. After a tremendous 2018 season, we are even more excited about what 2019 will bring.”
This past year, Long Island’s Justin Bonsignore rolled off eight wins en route to his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship. He out-distanced rising young star Chase Dowling and dethroned five-time tour champion Doug Coby to claim the top spot in the premier Modified series.
One of the highlights of 2018 was the inaugural Musket 250, a $25,000-to-win extra-distance championship event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Dowling took advantage of a clash between Bonsignore and former tour champion – and 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver – Ryan Preece in the final turns of the final lap to score his first win and claim the biggest winner’s purse in tour history.
The 2019 race at New Hampshire will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Whelen Modified Tour will also be part of the Monster Energy Series weekend at the “Magic Mile” with its championship points event on Saturday, July 21. The annual all-star race for the tour will be held on the 1.053-mile speedway on Friday, July 20.
Other schedule highlights include: Two premier northeastern tracks remain in place on the calendar: Massachusetts’ Seekonk Speedway will host the tour on Saturday, June 1. The tour’s trip to upstate New York and Oswego Raceway will be part of the track’s 63rd Annual Classic Week with the Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald’s. Riverhead Raceway will host a pair of races: Saturday, July 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7. Bonsignore swept the two events at his home track in 2018.
The championship will conclude with the traditional races at Stafford and Thompson. First will be the 47th Annual NAPA Fall Final weekend at Stafford on Sunday, Sept. 29, followed by the crowning of the 2019 champion at the 57th Annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing on Sunday, Oct. 13.
