The Flowers of Peggotty Beach

by Ken Spears

The Flowers of Peggotty Beach is a coming of age story where two cousins, Lisa and Felicity, are forced to spend a summer vacation together with their mothers. Set in the early 1990’s, the mothers (Patty and Debbie) have rented the very cottage on Peggotty Beach in Scituate, Massachusetts where they themselves had spent family summers in their now lost youth. The estranged cousins soon become close as they discover more about each other than they ever expected to. Felicity, recently becoming a teenager, is struggling with socializing with her peers while the younger Lisa is not only recovering from the death of her father but was born with tics and stereotypies that ostracize her. Enter the local pre-teen boys and with them fun, excitement, curiosity and, eventually, bullying. Again and again, the girls put the boys in their place and become even closer to each other in doing so. Summer near the ocean proves to be an adventure until a massive storm changes everything forever. The Flowers of Peggotty Beach is a story of family and friendship, dreams and danger, and a young girl that learns to believe in herself. (less)
