It may not be long before spectators return to Formula 1 races. The emphasis, is clearly on the word “may” in that sentence, as when fans will be able to return the grandstands is really anybody’s guess.

Although the sport’s four races on the American continent, including those at Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Austin, Texas, in the United States, have now been canceled for 2020, fans are turning attention to races announced last week for the Nurburgring in Germany, Portugal’s Portimao circuit, and Imola in Italy.

“There will be spectators,” Portugal’s tourism minister Rita Marques said about that circuit’s Oct. 25 date. “We are working on several scenarios, with more or less spectators depending on the evolution of the health situation.”

The Nurburgring, which last hosted an F1 race in 2013. is also hoping to welcome fans, although circuit CEO Mirco Markfort said that whether that happens is currently “in the stars.”Related StoryEvery car is fun on the Nurburgring

“We do not promise that the race will be held with spectators, but we do not deny it either,” he told German media outlet Auto Bild. “It’s too early to talk about it.”

Four-time world champion and current Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel says the Nurburgring’s October 11 race date means that the weather forecast will be particularly interesting.

“It will definitely be a challenge for the teams and for us drivers,” Vettel said, referring to the fact that average temperatures in the Eifel region at that time are below 50 degrees.

“I’m excited to see what the weather in the Eifel will be like in October.”

Latest F1 Schedule of Remaining Races (As of July 27)

THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL STRENGTH FOR RACE CAR DRIVERS: PART 1

brain-544412_1920.jpg
Mental Strength/men(t)l/ /streNG(k)TH/The ability of an individual to effectively deal with any adversity or challenges, pressure and stressors

Written by: Toni Calderon, Speed Group Partner

Motorsports is a unique sport in many ways. It’s one of the only sports where one mistake, one wrong turn, one millisecond of distraction can have huge consequences, both monetary and more importantly of life or death.

Couple this with extremely limited practice, and the pressure of having the hopes and dreams of a full team of people who’ve spent countless man-hours preparing the race car, all fall in the hands of one person, and you’ll start understanding the crucial role that mental health plays in a race car driver’s career.

Dealing with Adversity or Challenges

May 18, 2015 is a day that changed James Hinchliffe’s life forever.  A suspension failure during practice for the Indy 500 caused James Hinchcliffe to hit the Turn 3 wall at over 200mph, with an impact of 128 Gs.  The violent impact shot a piece of suspension through the monocoque, impaling Hinch’s legs and cutting his femoral artery.  These life threatening injuries would go on to sideline him for months, and recovery became Hinchcliffe’s biggest challenge, both physically and mentally.

“My accident was obviously the biggest set back I’ve had in my career. Driving the car one moment, waking up strapped to a backboard, in a neck brace, tube down my throat, surrounded by doctors the next,” said Hinchcliffe. “The doctors told me the quickest way back into a race car was to do nothing. My body needed to heal, and I needed to rest for that to happen. As an athlete and competitor, my brain is wired to push myself. To push my limits. Doing that in this case would’ve been a huge setback, but just ‘sitting around’ wasn’t something that came easily to me. So I turned it into a competition. As soon as I accepted the fastest way back was to rest and do nothing, I made a competition of how much nothing I could do in a day. I wore a pedometer to track my steps and not go over a certain amount. I would plan out my meals and bathroom breaks strategically to spend as much time resting as I could. Once I shifted that mentality of pushing myself to the thing I like doing the least – doing nothing – I excelled and my recovery flew by. I was back in a car a full two months sooner than the doctors predicted, and that was because of the mindset I was able to put myself in throughout that challenging time.”

Dealing with these types of challenges can be extremely draining to a driver and a successful physical recovery will vary greatly depending on mental strength.

“Mental strength during recovery or in times of adversity, means that you are looking at the event/injury as a challenge, the same way as you would look at a championship,” said Santiago Calderon, Speed Group’s Mental Strength Coach. “If you are looking at it as one thing, it may cause you to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or unmotivated from your lack of improvement. This is why you have to focus on the small, mundane moments and give them 100% effort to be able to achieve the bigger results.”

What mental strength techniques can help an individual handle adversity or challenges?

  • Journaling
    • Using a journal or a log is crucial as it gives the individual a record of their achievements
      • Keep track of the “little wins” of recovery (More range of motion, less pain, less frustration, etc.). This can be used for moments of frustration or helplessness when the individual isn’t able to see improvements, but can look back at these wins and see that they have had overall improvements
        • Motorsports is all about data, right? Having these little bits of data over a long period of time makes it easier to chart, and literally see “improvement” on paper.
      • Keeping track of moments that were hard or difficult can help with the visualization script and how to get past them next time, or knowing to expect them so they are not as big of a “punch”.

Title Chases Get Serious at WDEV/Calkins Night While Warriors Double Up @ T’ Road

Barre, VT — Barre’s Thunder Road enters the second half of the 2020 season this Thursday, July 30 at 7:00pm with WDEV Radio/Calkins Portable Toilets Night. The summer heat has been beating down at the last few events, and it has warmed up the championship battles as racers jockey for the edge.

A full card of championship action is on tap this week for the Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks with intriguing stories all around. The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors also up the ante with twin 25-lap features to make up their Governor’s Cup rain-out from two weeks ago.

With double-points night in the rear-view mirror, the title pictures have shuffled drastically. In some cases, it is still anybody’s guess who wins the championship. The Late Models have seven drivers with 54 points of the lead with several others lurking in the shadows.

Sitting at the top of the hill is Wolcott’s Marcel J. Gravel. Now in his fifth full year of Late Model competition, the low-budget racer is having the season of his life to date. A runner-up up finish last Friday night put him back in the overall lead with a nine-point edge over veteran Trampas Demers of Shelburne. Both are seeking their first “King of the Road” crown.

“I feel the best I’ve ever felt about (my chances),” Gravel recently told The Inside Groove. “We’re not going to do anything different. My guys have been (working hard) for six straight weeks, and we’re not going to change a thing, because we don’t need to right now. Once you start trying to dial yourself right out of it is when you can throw this whole championship deal right in the trash can.”

Not far behind Gravel and Demers are the last three Maplewood/Irving Oil Late Model champions. Barre’s Jason Corliss and Milton’s Scott Dragon each have two wins this year, but twin setbacks on June 25 left both crawling out of a hole. Now that they have made their way out, each has their sights set on another title. Although Therrien is still searching for a win, his consistent speed has produced a perfect record of top-10 finishes to keep him in the hunt.

The Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers are even closer. With three features in three days thanks to a rain-out, things have changed drastically since this time last week. Defending champion Jason Woodard of Waterbury Center found his old self just in time for the Midseason Championships and is back on top of the standings thanks to the double-point win.

Hinesburg’s Derrick Calkins and Barre’s Cameron Ouellette are tied for second 12 points behind Woodard. Calkins entered last Friday’s event a distant 18th in the standings — but finishes of 1st, 3rd, and 4th over the long weekend have him right back in the hunt. Ouellette missed most of the 2019 season with health issues but is now a factor for the championship. Morrisville’s Brandon Lanphear and Hardwick’s Jaden Perry round out the top-5. The top-7 drivers are separated by a mere 27 points.

The Allen Lumber Street Stock championship is Brandon Gray’s to lose. The E. Thetford driver, whose late father Troy won the Street Stock title back in 1987, leads Derby’s Tim Hunt by nearly a full event’s worth of points thanks to five top-5 finishes. From Hunt on back, though, everything is up for grabs. There are just 30 points between Hunt and 10th-place Kaiden “Tropical Storm” Fisher, meaning big swings can still happen on a weekly basis.

The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors have two chances on Thursday to wow fans with four-cylinder entertainment. Their Vermont Governor’s Cup make-up feature starts the night. The race has been extended to 25 laps, and drivers who were not at the original event may start at the rear. A second 25-lap feature is slated for later in the evening with the finishing order from the first feature flipped to set the starting line-up. Each feature will have separate trophies and separate purse.

Thunder Road sends off the month of July this Thursday, July 30 at 7:00pm with WDEV Radio/Calkins Portable Toilets Night. All four divisions are on the card with double features for the Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors. Admission is $15 for adults and $3 for kids ages 12 and under with limited fan attendance.

Advance tickets are on sale until 10:00am Thursday morning at https://happsnow.com/event/Thunder-Road-Speedbowl. Any remaining tickets will be available at the track on race day. A $15 pay-per-view is also available on the Northeast Sports Network at www.NSNsports.net/sponsors/racing.

Another Stout NASCAR Modified Field Preparing for White Mountain Showdown

Attachment thumbnail

Top NASCAR Modified racers from throughout the Northeast such as Bellingham, MA’s Woody Pitkat will return to White Mountain Motorsports Park this Saturday, August 1. (Mark Alan Sumner photo)

N. Woodstock, NH — The biggest names of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) are once again coming to N. Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park this Saturday, August 1 at 5:30 pm. The entry list for the White Mountain Showdown 200 features many of the same top drivers who went at it on Independence Day, and with nearly 30 teams already entered, another outstanding show is almost certainly in the cards.

For most of the field, the July 4 event was their first trip to the scenic quarter-mile bullring. Not surprisingly, the cream rose to the top, with podium finishers Justin Bonsignore, Matt Hirschman, and Doug Coby combining for countless Modified wins and championships. Now that each team and driver has an event’s worth of notes to work with, some new names could emerge as serious contenders.

Still, after two events in the 2020 NASCAR Modified season, everyone is chasing Holtsville, NY’s Bonsignore. The 2018 NWMT Champion is 2-for-2 after getting around Hirschman following some contact late in the Independence Day 200. Not surprisingly, that perfect record places Bonsignore atop the point standings. Hirschsman’s plans for Saturday are unknown as of press time.

Milford, CT’s Coby, meanwhile, continues to make strides as an owner-driver. As the winner of six of the last eight NASCAR Modified championships, it is no surprise Coby would get up to speed fast in his own equipment. He sits fourth in the standings, and a win at White Mountain would put his quest for a seventh NWMT championship into high gear.

Other top runners are looking to improve after performing below their lofty standards in the first White Mountain visit. While multi-time Modified Racing Series (MRS) champion Jon McKennedy, number-three point driver Craig Lutz, and former Stafford Motor Speedway Champion Woody Pitkat all scored top-10 finishes, they hope to be serious factors for the win this time around. Meanwhile, Matt Swanson, Ronnie Silk, and Rob Summers are aiming to bounce back after getting felled by crashes or mechanical failures last time out.

On the flip side, some driver who made a statement on Independence Day could ride that momentum to a win. Youngster Tommy Catalano earned his first top-5 finish with the NASCAR Modifieds last time out at White Mountain. Ageless veteran Dave Sapienza was impressive in the event while two-time MRS Champion Chris Pasteryak looked as close as he’s ever been to his first NWMT victory. Eric Goodale, Patrick Emerling, and Kyle Bonsignore are just some of the other notables that fans can expect to roll into the pits this Saturday.

A full card of action is also scheduled for the track’s Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers, and 7-Eleven Dwarf Cars. At the season’s halfway point, the Late Models have a close battle going for the “King of the Mountains” title. St. Johnsbury, VT’s Stacy Cahoon and Groveton, NH’s Quinny Welch, who have combined for 13 track championships, are currently 1-2 at the top just four points apart.

However, fellow veteran Oren Remick of Monroe, NH — who’s still looking for his first Late Model title — is breathing down their necks. Young guns Matthew Morrill, Christian Laflamme, and Joel Hodgdon aren’t far behind as they get ready for the stretch run.

In this Flying Tigers, Hardwick’s Jaden Perry is holding off two-time defending champion Shane Sicard of Barton, VT. Although Sicard has three wins to Perry’s one, the latter has finished in the top-4 of every feature. That consistent excellence has helped Perry out-point the division’s reigning king to date. Should either stumble, veteran Michael Clark and rookie Kasey Beattie are ready to pounce.

The 7-Eleven Dwarf Car division has been led by Wyman Motorsports so far this year. Easton, NH’s Jason Wyman and St. Johnsbury’s Colby Bourgeois have combined to win all three point-counting events. Along with their teammate Dave Gyger, the trio swept the podium last Saturday night. Tommy Smithers managed to interrupt the dominance with a victory in a non-point Open event two weeks ago.

The action begins Saturday, August 1 at 5:30pm with qualifying for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Heat races for local divisions will follow with the White Mountain Showdown 200 going green at approximately 7:00pm. Feature events for the Late Models, Flying Tigers, and Dwarf Cars wrap up the program.

Advance tickets and camping reservations for the White Mountain Showdown 2000 are available at https://happsnow.com/event/White-Mountain-Motorsports-Park.

Admission is $30 for adults and $5 for kids ages 12 and under. Attendance will be limited to 50% of capacity per New Hampshire state guidelines.  NBC Sports TrackPass will have a live pay-per-view broadcast of the NASCAR Modified feature for those with a monthly or yearly subscription.

(Stafford Springs, CT)—Stafford Speedway officials have announced that the Twisted Tea Open Modified 80 event scheduled for Saturday, August 1st has been postponed to a future date due to scheduling conflicts in the region. Additionally the events scheduled for August 21 and 22nd have been updated to eliminate scheduling conflicts for Modified teams.

“Due to the NASCAR Modified Tour event scheduled on the same day we have decided to postpone the Twisted Tea Open 80 to a later date,” explained Stafford Speedway president Mark Arute. “It’s very important to us to provide an excellent on track product for our fans and we felt that due to the scheduling conflict we would not be able to deliver that on Saturday. The Open Modifieds return next Friday, August 7th for a 100-lap event which should have a great field of cars.”

All tickets purchased for the Twisted Tea Open 80 will be good for the NAPA Auto Parts Open Modified 100 scheduled for next Friday. If ticket holders are unable to attend the August 7th event they are encouraged to contact the track office.

Stafford Speedway has also adjusted the August 21st and 22nd schedule. The Lincoln Tech Open Modified 80 has been moved to Friday and will be paired with the SK Modifieds® and SK Light Modifieds in a full open wheel event. The Call Before You Dig Pro Late Model 81 will remain on the schedule for Saturday, August 22nd and will be paired with Stafford’s Late Model, Limited Late Model, and Street Stock divisions.

“Scheduling in 2020 has been challenging, but we will keep doing our best to get in events and provide a great show for the fans,” continued Arute. “As always, a big thank you to our race teams and fans for working with us through all the changes this year. We’ll see everyone this Friday.”

Stafford Speedway returns to action this Friday with a regular event that includes all 5 of Stafford’s weekly divisions. Limited general admission and paddock passes remain available and are now on-sale here: https://staffordmotorspeedway.com/store/Event-Tickets-c40170015.  Any fans who cannot attend this Friday’s event in person can order the live stream for $20 from www.staffordspeedway.tv
