Riverhead Raceway owners Eddie & Connie Partridge and Tom Gatz are honored and excited to announce a four race series for the NASCAR Modifieds that will encompass the extra distance races scheduled for the 2020 season, now known as the Crown Jewel Modified events, at the historic quarter mile oval. In addition to the weekly NASCAR track championship points the series will carry a separate set of points awarding the top driver the Ted Christopher Cup. Christopher one of the most successful drivers to ever strap into an open wheel Modified of any kind tragically lost his life in an airplane crash while flying to Riverhead Raceway for a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race on September 16th, 2017 at 59-years young.

The four race Crown Jewel modified series is the concept of Riverhead Raceway race director Scott Tapley, who along with track GM John Ellwood put the final touches on the series. The chase for the Ted Christopher Cup will start with the biggest race of the season at Riverhead the Saturday May 30th Islip 300, a race that pays the winner a cool $7,000. The second race will unfold on Saturday July 4th during the 70th Year Celebration with the NASCAR Modifieds set to do battle in a 70-lap tilt. Race number three takes place during the annual Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 Saturday July 25th with the four race series set to conclude Saturday night August 29th during the NASCAR 100. During the victory lane celebration at the conclusion of the NASCAR 100 the Ted Christopher Cup will be presented to the champion of the series. Track management additionally disclosed the Ted Christopher Cup will be a perpetual award much like the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Drivers Cup that is presented annually to the track’s NASCAR Modified champion.

GM John Ellwood noted the rules package for the series that Chief Technical Director Randy Murray will be implementing are the same that have been used during the annual Islip 300. That allows teams who run Modified Racing Series, Race of Champions or Tri-Track Series to run their series rules while competing in the Crown Jewel modified events at Riverhead and chasing the prestigious Ted Christopher Cup at Riverhead Raceway. All teams will be required to run the track Hoosier Racing Tire. The starting field for all four races will be set via time trials with no invert or redraw in play a policy new for 2020 at Riverhead Raceway.

Prior to making the announcement on the Ted Christopher Cup concept John Ellwood spoke first with Ted’s widow Quinn, “had a wonderful conversation with Quinn the other day and she is very touched about what we are doing in honor of her husband. In fact she told me she’s going to try and make it out to the four races and we hope to have her present the Ted Christopher Cup in August” John noted.

The driving career of “TC” indeed is a fabled one spread across numerous race tracks and divisions in the northeast. Ted stood victorious in the historic Riverhead Raceway victory lane 3 times in Whelen Modified Tour competition starting with his win in June of 2002 in the famed #13 and for the 3rd time in 2006 in Eddie Whelan’s #36 machine. Weekly Saturday night racing was a passion for “TC” and in fact Ted spent one summer racing weekly at Riverhead Raceway driving for Wayne Anderson and his Eastport Feeds team with the combination winning once that year in route to a 4th place finish in the championship standings. Teddy enjoyed most of his success at the famed Stafford Motor Speedway where he was a 9 time SK Modified champion totaling 131 wins along the way. “TC” scored four Thompson Speedway Sunoco Modified titles tallying 99 victories while visiting the winners circle 47 times at the Waterford Speedbowl in a SK Modified. Ted’s WMT stats include the 2008 championship and 42 career wins, third on the all-time win list.

Despite all that on track success Ted Christopher remained one of the most popular and charismatic personalities in the game and no matter where or what he competed race fans and media flocked to him simply just to be around the man affectionately known as the “King” to many in the northeast racing community. Riverhead Raceway will honor and remember that legacy this year and for seasons to come with the Ted Christopher Cup.

Additionally, John Ellwood announced that the six divisions that make up the weekly program at Riverhead Raceway will have also have a “Triple Crown” series in 2020 presented by Miller Lite the details of which will be released next week.

The 2020 NASCAR Weekly Series at Riverhead Raceway will open Saturday May 9th with the NASCAR Modifieds, Late Models. Crate Modifieds, Figure Eights, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and INEX Legend Race Cars all in action. Two practice days will proceed opening night on Saturday afternoon April 25th and May 2nd. The May Meltdown Enduro program will hit the track Sunday afternoon May 3rd.

The complete 2020 schedule will be revealed at www.riverheadraceway.com after January 1st .

Mikey Flynn Living a Dream With Move Into SK Modified Division for 2020 at Stafford

(Stafford Springs, CT)—After 2 seasons in the SK Light division, Hampden, MA native Mikey Flynn will move up to Stafford Speedway’s premier SK Modified® division in 2020 where he will challenge for Rookie of the Year Honors.  Flynn is yet another graduate of the Monday night Wild Thing Kart Series that will be joining the SK Modified® field and Flynn is set to live out one of his dreams by racing in the SK Modified® division.

“I’m definitely excited,” said Flynn.  “It’s a big move for us and this is something that I’ve always wanted to do.  I’ve watched racing at Stafford since I was a little kid and the races you always watch are the SK’s.  I’m a little nervous because the competitors are the toughest around.  We ran the Fall Final and it wasn’t so much how fast the cars are but it was how fast the racing is and how quick you have to make moves.  The SK drivers are so good at that and they have a lot of experience at making those quick moves on the track.”

Flynn has a strong contingent of race supporters on board as he pursues his SK Modified® dream.

“I have to thank my sponsors Ballyheigue Farm, Hampden Engineering, Trailer Depot, Auth Fuels, Place Motors, HUB International, Kahn Tractor, Gio’s Pizza, and my Mom, Dad, Uncle Chris, Joe Grasty, Jr., Kenny Barry, Billy Michael, and all the guys at SPAFCO for all their help and support.”

Flynn made his SK Modified® debut in last season’s NAPA Fall Final, where after qualifying for the feature event through the consolation event, he finished on the lead lap in 18th place.  The experience that Flynn gained that weekend will be instrumental in helping him establish a baseline for his #24 Ballyheigue Farm machine when the NAPA Spring Sizzler® rolls around in April 2020.

“I think those 40 laps were the most I’ve ever learned in a racecar,” said Flynn.  “Just making that race was hard with the handicapping and we had to qualify through the last chance qualifiers race.  That experience should be a big help for me because I won’t be coming into the season blind.  It was big for us to make that race.  Some good drivers got sent home and didn’t make the race so for us to make it into the field with our stuff and the same car we ran in the SK Lights with just changing the motor was huge for us.”

Flynn will also enlist the assistance of Ken Barry from SPAFCO to help him with chassis setup.

“Ken Barry is going to help us out with the car with putting setups in the car and maintaining the car,” continued Flynn.  “I’m excited and happy to be working with Kenny this season.  I think I’ll definitely need his knowledge and if I want to get better I’ll need his help to get where I want to be as a driver.  I’m going to listen to anything he has to tell me.”

During his 2 full seasons of SK Light competition, Flynn finished 2nd 4 different times and had three other podium finishes, but went without a feature victory.  While Flynn would like nothing more than to put his #24 into NAPA Victory Lane, his focus for his rookie season will be on becoming a consistent car and taking home the Rookie of the Year trophy at the end of the season.

“I think we were probably the fastest SK Light car that didn’t win a race,” said Flynn.  “We went into turn 3 a couple of times on the final lap in the lead and weren’t able to get a win, so that was disappointing.  But we’re not really focusing on winning a race just yet.  Rookie of the Year would be our goal.  With how the rookie class is shaping up for this season, I think it’s going to be really competitive.  Once we’ve started to finish a couple races and we get into the handicapping, being able to stay up front and be competitive without falling to the back of the field will be another goal.”

With changing from the SK Light to SK Modified® division, Flynn will now be racing 40-lap events rather than 20-lap events and he says that getting to grips with the increased lap count as well as managing his tires for the season will be one of his biggest adjustments to make.

“I think keeping organized with things like our tire inventory and learning how to race with the competition for 40 laps is going to be the biggest change for us from the SK Lights,” said Flynn.  “I remember at the Fall Final last year once we hit 20 laps and then when it was lap-30 I was asking ‘Are we close to done yet?’  It’s a little more wear and tear on the cars but I’m sure we’ll get used to it.  The first couple weeks are going to be very important for us.  We’d like to be able to finish races and keep the car in one piece to load back into the trailer at the end of the night.  If we can do that, we can start to make adjustments and see what we like in the car and what we don’t like.”

With the NAPA Spring Sizzler still four months away, Flynn can’t wait to get back out on track and get down to business kicking off his rookie season.

“I’m counting down the days,” said Flynn.  “I was itching to get right back out there on the track after the Fall Final.  I’m excited for what we have with Kenny and excited for all the new stuff we’re putting in the car.  I think it’s going to be an exciting year.”

The 2020 SK Modified® season kicks off with the 49th Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler® on April 24-26. Tickets for the “Greatest Race in the History of Spring” are on sale now by calling the Speedway Box Office 860-684-2783 or online at www.staffordspeedway.com.

NASCAR’s reaction to Junior Johnson’s death shows he was larger than life

Junior Johnson

NASCAR
12/20/2019

WRITTEN BYTOM GATTO

NASCAR MOTORSPORTS

NASCAR lost one of its legends Friday when Junior Johnson died at age 88. Johnson was one of the most successful drivers and team owners in the sport’s early decades, and he was a part of the inaugural NASCAR Hall of Fame Class in 2010.

He also attracted a devoted fan base through his backstory of outrunning the law as he hauled moonshine across North Carolina, an endeavor that, in turn, led to him running stock cars.

People associated with NASCAR, in reacting to the news of his death, detailed Johnson’s outsize role in building stock car racing into a national sport:

No one outside the France family has been more instrumental to the growth of Nascar than #JuniorJohnson, who has passed at age 88. A superstar driver, then multi-championship team owner, he brought RJR/Winston to Nascar, vaulting the sport to national prominence.— Mike Joy (@mikejoy500) December 20, 2019

Every aspiring driver needs to know Junior Johnson’s story. RIP the true soul of NASCAR. Built cars to outrun the law. Then, only legends receive pardons from Presidents. pic.twitter.com/M8fbwthL2U— Kurt Busch (@KurtBusch) December 21, 2019

Junior Johnson was both an all-time great driver and an all-time great owner as well. His legacy will live on in the sport for generations. pic.twitter.com/E7P7osKWBV— Jaret Lundberg (@IceTitan80) December 20, 2019

A one of a kind icon. Larger than life on and off the track.

I’ve always dreamed of sitting and listening to Junior Johnson tell stories about his career. I can’t even imagine.

Thank you Junior, for everything. pic.twitter.com/1ApTjr2bnS— Seth Sharp (@SethSharp35) December 20, 2019

Junior Johnson was one of the coolest people who ever lived. Innovator. Bootlegger. Man’s man. American badass of the highest order.

My favorite Junior Johnson story was when I personally went to JJs house at 19 years old trying to get a job in the sport. He was mowing his yard, shut his mower off and just told me the best way to do it. It was a moment engraved in my head forever.

Hate to lose these legends.— 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬 (@racechaser1one) December 20, 2019

FOUR TIME AND DEFENDING INDOOR AUTO RACING SERIES CHAMPION ERICK RUDOLPH IS POISED TO START FIFTH TITLE RUN IN ALLENTOWN JANUARY 3-4

ALLENTOWN, PA December 20, 2019 . . .The most prolific championship winning driver in the history of the Indoor Auto Racing Series Fueled By VP Race Fuels, Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, NY, will begin his quest for a fifth TQ Midget Series title on Friday and Saturday, January 3-4, 2020 inside the PPL Center in downtown Allentown, PA.

Rudolph, also one of the winningest dirt Modified drivers during the 2019 outdoor season, is the defending Indoor Series champion. Rudolph clinched the title by winning the 2019 series finale in Syracuse, N.Y.

Rudolph, who will turn 28 during the month of January, also won the Series title in 2016, 2015 and 2012 and is the only driver to win more than two titles.

“I’ll be driving the same car as last year,” Rudolph said. “Mark Lafler will be with me.”

The Indoor Auto Racing Series Fueled By VP Race Fuels will open its 2020 season in the Allentown, Pa. Tickets for the fifth annual Ironton Telephone sponsored event are on sale at the PPL Center box office. Tickets are also available at www.pplcenter.com or by calling 610-347-TIXX.

Rudolph will be using the two race Allentown Indoor race meet as a springboard toward his quest for a second straight title. Rudolph won each of his four titles driving Lafler-built cars. Lafler has built nearly two dozen of the rugged, fast, remarkably simple cars but he has chosen not to build any more for new customers.

“His cars haven’t changed very much at all over the years,” Rudolph said. “Subtle differences, but very little. Same with the Dave Pippard’s engines we run.”

Rudolph is coming off a very successful 2019 season. In addition to winning the Indoor Auto Racing Series title in March, he was the 358 Modified season champion at his home track, Ransomville Speedway, and at N.Y.’s Utica-Rome Speedway. He also won the prestigious 358 Modified Super DIRTcar Series title giving him four titles in one outstanding season.

Matt Janisch of Nazareth, PA and Ryan Flores of Mooresville, NC, who won the Friday and Saturday Allentown TQ Midget features in 2019 will both be in competition on January 3rd and 4th hoping to keep Rudolph out of victory lane.

The Allentown Indoor schedule calls for doors opening at 6:00PM with racing getting underway at 7:30 PM on Friday. On Saturday, doors open at 5:00PM with racing beginning at 7:00PM sharp. An on-track Fan Fest is available on Saturday at no extra charge to ticket holders who chose the option when making their purchase.

After the two-race event opener in Allentown, the “Concrete Series” presented by BELFOR Property Restoration, the series moves to Atlantic City, N.J.’s Boardwalk Hall on Friday and Saturday, January 31st and February 1st for the 18th annual NAPA Auto Parts Classic.

The “Concrete Series” season finale is on Friday and Saturday March 13th and 14th in a second year return to the brand new Exposition Center located on the grounds of the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. N.Y.

Rudolph ended the 2018 season with an Indoor victory in December at a special non-point event held on a banked clay oval. The third annual East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals will return to CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, N.J. with a new date. This race meet, held the last two years in December, has been moved to Friday and Saturday, February 21st and 22nd.

Rudolph will be back to defend the $5,000 to win race honors again driving a dirt wingless 600 Sprint owned by Pennsylvania car owner Tom Fraschetta.

“I kind of like Atlantic City more than the other tracks but only because of where it is and what there is to do there after the races,” said Rudolph.

“Syracuse was nice because there were a lot more people I know personally who were there watching me race, the dirt race was really cool too.”

Though Rudolph missed out on also winning the Super DIRTcar big-block Modified Series title – he was a contender until late in the season – he was pleased with his overall results from 2019 which included 24 wins, third among northeast drivers.

Rudolph admits that he will campaign vigorously, as he has in the past three years, for the Super DIRT Series Big Block title, which is a 30-race grind that stretches into November.

Short term, he’s fully focused on the four Indoor Auto Racing Series events. Tickets for any or all the venues make great Christmas gifts. They can be obtained now through information available on the series website: indoorautoracing.com along with special host hotel rates.
