Rallying-Alonso enters 2020 Dakar with Toyota

Fernando Alonso

(Reuters) – Two-times Formula One champion and double Le Mans 24 Hours winner Fernando Alonso will enter next month’s (January) Dakar Rally with Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer confirmed on Thursday.

The move has been an open secret with Alonso entering rallies in South Africa and Morocco as preparation with fellow Spaniard and former Dakar motorcycle winner Marc Coma as co-driver.

The Dakar Rally has come a long way since its origins as a race from Paris to Senegal, with the 2020 edition taking place in Saudi Arabia for the first time after moving from South America.

Alonso’s entry was announced ahead of this weekend’s Spanish round of the rally world championship.

The Spaniard is also seeking to win the Indianapolis 500 to complete the so-called Triple Crown of Motorsport, after winning the other two parts at Le Mans and in Formula One.

The 38-year-old hung up his helmet as a McLaren Formula One driver last year.

Qatar’s Nasser al-Attiyah, a three times winner, is the reigning Dakar champion and is also returning with Toyota. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin in Mexico City, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Barre, VT – Next August, fans and racers will get the chance to experience Thunder Road in a whole new way. Track officials have announced that the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience will be coming to Thunder Road for the first time on Sunday, August 9, 2020, giving participants the opportunity to circle the high banks in a NASCAR-style stock car.

Both Driving Experience and Ride-Along Experiences are available that offer the thrill of a lifetime. The driving program allows fans or racers can pilot a 500+ horsepower race car for up to 50 laps. For the ride-along program, participants will ride in the passenger seat of a special two-seat race car while an instructor hits high speeds around the “Nation’s Site of Excitement”.

Those who wish to participate in the driving program must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. For the ride along program, participants must be at 14 years old. Anyone under the age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. More information is available at www.racewithrusty.com and www.racewithrusty.com/project/thunder-road-speedway.

“We’re thrilled to offer this for the central Vermont racing community,” Thunder Road managing partner Cris Michaud said. “This is a chance for people who otherwise would never get the chance to feel the rush of driving a high-horsepower race car to do just that. And they get to do it at one of their favorite tracks – without having to build their own car! We can’t wait for the Rusty Wallace Experience to make its first trip to Barre.”

The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience is the largest racing school in the United States. The program visits nearly 90 tracks annually around the country, from short tracks such as Thunder Road, White Mountain Motorsports Park, and Oswego Speedway to superspeedways like Atlanta Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

For a limited time, fans can get special holiday discounts on the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience. Their current deal includes 50 percent off all “Speedway” and “Super Speedway” driving packages plus a free matching driving package at any “Short Track” or “Bull Ring Track”. ment volunteer programs in Vietnam and also to facilitate the international educational exchange programme for doctors from Hanoi’s three main Craniofacial Centres with world leading institutions in the UK, USA and Canada. VGPC will also use its platform to help increase awareness of the plight of the many children in need of life changing surgical intervention in Vietnam so that FTW can raise the necessary funds to cover the oper- ating costs for children who require these complex surgeries. The MOU was signed at the UK Ambassador’s Residence and in the presence of representatives from the UK, Canadian and US embassies, related govern- ment organizations and FTW’s partners Vietnam Airlines and the Hong Ngoc Corporation. This collaboration is part of VGPC’s sustainable development strategy in making contributions to society through the development of motorsports, educational programs for children and charity support throughout the country. This strategy is also consistent with the Vingroup’s – VGPC’s parent company – mission of working ‘for a better life for Vietnamese people”.Speaking at the signing ceremony, the CEO of the Vietnam Grand Prix Corporation, Ms. Le Ngoc Chi said: “We feel privileged to team up with Facing the World by tackling a cause that is close to the hearts of so many Vietnamese citizens. F1 is going to be one of the most prestigious international sporting events ever seen in Vietnam and we want to use this opportunity to help raise awareness & vital funds for procedures that will imp- rove the lives of so many children as well as supporting the education and research of the medical practitioners carrying out this noble work.”Katrin Kandel, CEO (Voluntary) and Trustee at Facing the World, also commented: “The charity’s international team from medical institutions across the UK, Canada, the US and Vietnam all share the dedication and passion to help children born with facial differences. FTW and its partners have collaborated to create the first blueprint for replicable Craniofacial Centres which, once fully up and running, will be able to treat 60% of all new facial birth defects in Vietnam. The charity has a clear vision for a sustainable healthcare solution and I can’t thank F1 Vietnam Grand Prix enough for its support.”The cooperation between VGCP and FTW will contribute to raising awareness of this vital issue and helping to deliver more effective solutions via this meaningful charity campaign, bringing more hope for a brighter future for children with facial differences in Vietnam. Currently, the occurrence of birth defects in Vietnam is estimated by some to be 10 times higher than in neighbouring countries. FTW’s plan for the next 5 years in Vietnam is to train 200 more doctors and perform 40,000 life-changing operations.

The organization has been active internationally since 2002 and in Vietnam since 2008. FTW’s operation focuses on 3 main activities: providing training to Vietnamese doctors through international fellowship so they could learn new techniques and approaches; donating equipment to hospitals in Vietnam to enable doctors to perform com- plex surgeries efficiently; and running medical missions to Vietnam to operate on children with Vietnamese doctors. In 11 years in Vietnam, dozens of doctors have been sent to the UK, Canada and the USA for interna- tional fellowship; thousands of Vietnamese children lives have been changed.Registered address: Suite 5, Bank Chambers, 567 Fulham Road, London SW6 1ESTel (+44) 0207 351 7832 | Email info@facingtheworld.org.uk | www.facingtheworld.netRegistered Charity No. 1092772 | Company No. 4427304

Ventura Raceway

The 79th Annual Turkey Night Grand Prix is one of the most talked about events in the USAC Midget racing industry. Held in beautiful Ventura, right on the beach, this venue is spectacular for the prestigious 98 lap main event. An added bonus, our grandstand seats have a back rest so you are more comfortable. Weather is always unknown as we are located right on the beach. Be prepared for anything, wear layers!

On Wednesday, November 27th, the Midgets practice all during the evening while the USAC/VRA Sprint Cars run their hot laps, qualifying, heat races and a special main event for an additional purse. Some of the drivers in that main event gain a “seat” in the A Main the following night, Turkey Night.

On Thursday, some of our double duty drivers are now really put to the test! The schedule calls for Sprints to continue their program of Semi Mains and the A Main event, while Midgets run through their entire program.

You do not want to miss this! NASCAR drivers, such as Christopher Bell (2017 & 2018 winner), Kyle Larson (2016 winner) will compete, with most of the USAC top drivers in the nation.

Reserve your seats today in order to witness this phenomenal event where all the best meet by the beach! If you are purchasing reserved seats for children under the age of 13, please call (805) 648-7223 to obtain the discounted seat price!
