Rally Portugal May 30, 2019

From the complete unknown of Rally Chile three weeks ago, the World Rally Championship rolls on to much more familiar territory of Rally Portugal, which has been part of the WRC calendar on and off since the championship’s founding in 1973.

Reigning six-time World Rally champion Sébastien Ogier is back on top of the championship standings but has Ott Tänak and Thierry Neuville in hot pursuit, only 10 and 12 points behind respectively.  It’s already round seven of 14 in the 2019 WRC season and yet there’s still nothing to separate the trio.

Make sure you keep up with the epic championship fight by catching  the best of the action from Portugal with Red Bull TV, with coverage live and on demand throughout the weekend on redbull.tv/wrc or via the Red Bull TV app.Rally Portugal: Need to know* Rally Portugal is returning to the iconic roads around Arganil this year, which featured heavily in the 1980s and ’90s but haven’t been seen since 2001, after which the rally went on hiatus for nearly a decade.

* Older events on the calendar have stages or sections which are etched in rally folklore: Ouninpohja in Finland, Col de Turini on the Rally Monte-Carlo, El Cóndor in Argentina. Portugal has its own: Fafe, home to the spectacular jump that even the most casual of rally fans will recognise.

* There’s a distinct road evolution over the course of the morning and afternoon loops: a sandy gravel base will hurt the early runners in the basking Portuguese sun, offering little in the way of grip. Wind the clock forward and the roads become rutted and rocks begin to rear their head, posing extra risk to the cars.

* Sébastien Ogier is tied with Markku Alén, the FIA Cup for Drivers winner in 1978, for most victories on Rally Portugal with five. Neuville has one victory to his name while Tänak is still trying to score his first win here.Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia, Rally Portugal 2019Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja, Rally Argentina 2019WRC champion Luis Moya joins Mike ChenWhen it comes to rally stars from the Iberian Peninsula, no duo in WRC history come close to matching the success of three-time champions Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Luis Moya.

Moya, who also worked behind-the-scenes for Subaru and Volkswagen after hanging up his helmet, will join Mike Chen to provide expert analysis, banking on his decades of top-level rally experience.

Both Moya and regular host Mike Chen will bring you the best of the action from the stages throughout the weekend, with all broadcasts available on demand at redbull.tv/wrc or via the app.

‘Chenny’ will again be filming a vlog from behind the scenes in the service park and looking ahead to the weekend – catch it from Friday on the Red Bull MotorsportsYouTube channel.Luis MoyaMike ChenRED BULL TV BRO
