News Update Week of 5/22RED BULL GRC UNVEILS THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK LAYOUT

Red Bull Global Rallycross has unveiled the course layout for next weekend’s series debut at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. At nine turns and .895 miles, the Red Bull GRC New England course is the first in series history to incorporate elements of both an oval and permanent road course contained within the facility, with drivers leaving the .625-mile oval to take on a piece of the 1.7-mile road course.

Racing clockwise, drivers will start from the oval pit lane and charge into Turn 1, making a hard right turn to enter the oval. A right-left combination will take them onto an extended dirt section, featuring the series’ signature 70-foot jump and a long dirt straightaway, before the back-and-forth Turns 4 and 5. Another long dirt section takes drivers out of the oval, through the gradual Turn 6, and ends at Turn 7.

From here, drivers have two options: the main course, which includes a tight right-hand corner between two short paved straightaways, or the Joker Lap, a significant shortcut that should allow drivers to pass multiple cars at once. The two lanes reunite for the left-hand Turn 9, which re-enters the oval and brings drivers past the finish line at full speed for another lap.

Red Bull Global Rallycross New England tickets are on sale now at http://www.redbullglobalrallycross.com/tickets. Red Bull GRC New England, Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2017 Red Bull GRC season, will take place on June 3-4, with dual Supercar broadcasts airing on June 3 and 4 at 5PM ET on NBC.

Ryan Waterman awarded the win at The Limited Sportsman Long Distance Race after post race inspection.

Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park hosted its second weekend of oval action on Sunday, May 21 with the second annual Limited Sportsman Long Distance & Military Night where veterans were welcomed to the race for free in celebration of their service, Armed Forces Day, and the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The drivers of the Limited Sportsman series took center with the highlight event of the evening, a 30-lap long distance race with 30 cars making up the field of competitors in the biggest race the series hold all season at the Big-T. The race was a popular new addition to the calendar in 2016, extending the normal 20-lap Limited Sportsman feature an extra ten laps. The 2017 event saw its share of drama as Ryan Waterman proved to be the car to beat, leading for much of the first half of the event. However, the extra distance paid off for Brent Gleason who took the lead around halfway and never looked back, surviving numerous cautions and a hard charge from Waterman to take the win but was later disqualified after post race inspection. Full story.

Memorial Day Weekend is one of the biggest for motor racing interests

valenti modified racing series

The Valenti Modified Racing Series will be front and center at the Lee USA Speedway in southern NH on Saturday afternoon of the Memorial Day Weekend

Track Talk

By Lou Modestino

The 101st Indy 500 is set for tomorrow, Sunday, May 28.  In 1932 Fred Frame who lived on Elm St. in Brockton won the Indy 500 that year.  Buddy Lazier, a 1985 graduate of Curry College in Milton, won the 1996 Indy 500.  Lazier is back at Indy and qualified in 20th position for this year’s classic.

Anthony Nocella of Woburn, a winner at Stafford Speedway in Conn. last weekend, leads the list of entries for the special holiday presentation of open-wheel modified racing today, Saturday, May 27, at New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway. It will mark the first time the Valenti Modified Racing Series has competed there on Memorial Day Weekend.

Lee and the Valenti Modified Racing Series management broke away from the 100-lap feature race format three years ago and instituted twin 50-lap races that met with both fan and competitor approval. Now another new twist has been created for this weekend. The 25-lap qualifying heat races will establish the starting lineup for the main event, a 50-lap $3,000 to win feature. The heat races will pay $500 to win. This concept and payoff has drawn interest from teams throughout New England.

Nocella tops an entry list that consisted of 24-race teams. The others are Woody Pitkat of Sturbridge,  and Mike Willis Jr. of Grantham, NH, runners-up at Stafford, who will join Nocella in this afternoon’s race. Todd Annarummo of Swansea, Mike Douglas, Jr. of Auburn, NH and Josh Cantara of Alfred, ME will race with the series for the first time this season. Jeff Rocco of Wallingford, Conn., long-time veteran Carl Pasteryak of Lisbon, Conn. returns to competition as does Dennis Perry of Pawcatuck, Conn. have both indicated they plan to compete. Add Matt Mead, Carl Medeiros, Dylan Rock, Donnie Lashua and Jeffrey Gallup will make the trek to Lee.

Three rounds of practice will start at 12 noon. Qualifying races begin at 2 p.m. The Northeast Classic Lites, New England Pro-4 Modifieds, Legends, and Bandolero’s will fill out the card. The VMRS will return to Lee in July and October.

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the summer season at racing venues all over New England.  Tonight, Saturday, May 27 there are special events at Star Speedway in Epping, NH, Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, NH, Seekonk Speedway,  Devil’s Bowl and Bear Ridge Speedways, both in in Vermont and Oxford Plains in Maine.  On Sunday afternoon, May 27 Thunder Road Speedway, another Vermont venue, hosts the PASS Tour while Seekonk Speedway schedules it’s first of three thrill shows this season at 5 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, May 29  Hudson Speedway in NH schedules stock car action while Maine’s Oxford Plain Speedway plans Motor Mayhem starting at 1 p.m.

New England Dragway in Epping, NH will be idle this weekend as the track crew prepares that venue for the big NHRA National set for next weekend.  Practice goes next Friday,June 2, with qualifying on Saturday, June 3 and the finals going off all day Sunday, June 4. (end)

Rick Williams excited for Dunleavy’s Modifiedz Night at Stafford

It's not very often that a driver like Tom Fearn can back up another Late Model Championship after 18 years.

Stafford Motor Speedway has been the scene of Rick Williams’ of his breakout performance

With the 2017 season underway at Stafford Speedway, one of the feel good stories of the season has to be the performance of East Hampton native and SK Light driver Rick Williams.  Williams began his racing career in the SK Light division back in 2009 and he ran every year before taking a break following the 2013 season.  While Williams recorded a total of 17 top-10 finishes with a best finish of third in those five seasons, his 2017 season has been a break-out performance.  Williams has recorded three consecutive top-7 finishes to start of the year and he is currently sitting in second place in the SK Light points standings.
