Lily Deware, the Oliver Ames High School Senior from Easton and Team BUBBA burger driver, was looking for her third consecutive BUBBA burger Northeast Divisional Championship. Fellow Massachusetts driver David Woodle was looking for his first. In the end, Woodle broke Deware’s two year strangle hold on the AX (Novice) Class, out dueling her for the win and putting the pre-season favorite also on track to unseat Deware as Champion in the BUBBA burger Junior Hydroplane Championship Series.

Driving her BUBBA burger / RBC Wealth Management / Mercury Outboard hydroplane race boat, Deware knew that Woodle needed to take away the inside lane from her at the start. But coming to the starting line a slower boat blocked her way into the first corner and Woodle was able to get the advantage and the inside lane. To make matters worse, Deware had to go wide allowing New Hampshire driver Eli Campbell to dive under her and move into second place. Campbell then hit the wake from Woodle’s boat causing his craft to hook sharply to the left. Some great driving by Campbell saved the boat from a possible barrel roll but his loss of momentum allowed Deware to drive inside of the slowed boat and take off after Woodle. Although Deware could get close, getting around Woodle was a different story as he maintained his lead on the BUBBA burger #6B and went on to win his first AX Class BUBBA Burger Northeast Divisional Championship. Eli Campbell rebounded to finish third.

The BUBBA B urger New England Junior Hydroplane Championship Series is an eleven race New England race series hosted by the South Shore Outboard Association  and sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association. Since its inception in 1953, the SSOA has produced over 1000 race events throughout New England. Additionally, SSOA drivers have won over 100 National, North American and World Championships.
