Local driver John Donahue Held off Scott Dragon to win the Late Model feature at Thunder Road International Speedway on Thursday night.
John Donahue of Graniteville held off a furious charge from Scott Dragon of Milton and claimed a photo-finish victory in the 50-lap Thunder Road Late Models feature on Community College of Vermont Night.
Donahue took the lead from pole-sitter Jason Allen of Barre on lap 27. Dragon, who was 13th on the starting grid, moved into second place on lap 42. With Donahue running the high side and Dragon the low line, the two leaders entered the final lap side-by-side. Donahue bobbled slightly coming out of turn 4, but edged Dragon at the finish line by 1/100th of a second.
Allen finished third, with Trampas Demers of South Burlington in fourth and rookie Chris Pelkey of South Barre in fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were David Whitcomb of Essex Jct., Cody Blake of Barre, Kyle Pembroke of Montpelier, Jason Corliss of Barre, and Eric Badore of Milton.
For the second week in a row, car #90 topped the field in the two-segment Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, but this week, there was a different driver behind the wheel. Cameron Ouellette of Barre finished fourth in the first 25-lap segment and third in the second to finish with seven combined points. Brandon Moodie of Wolcott also had seven points, but Ouellette’s higher finish in segment 2 was the tiebreaker. Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg claimed the checkered flag for the Tigers driving #90 last week.
Joe Steffen of Grand Isle finished fourth, and Doug Crowningshield of Barre was fifth.
In the Allen Lumber Street Stocks, Garry Bashaw of Lincoln took the lead from pole-sitter Thomas Merchant of Eden Mills with seven laps remaining and pulled away for an a quarter-track victory in the 25-lap main event. The win was the second of Bashaw’s career at Thunder Road.
Merchant had to work hard to hold on to the runner-up position, eventually fending off late charges fromTyler Austin of E. Calais (third place), Bunker Hodgdon lll of Hardwick (fourth) and William Hennequin of Hardwick (fifth). Alan Maynard of Fairfax, Gary Mullen of Tunbridge, Cooper Bouchard of Hinesburg, Brandon Lanphear of Morrisville, and Jennifer Getty of Cambridge completed the top ten.
Racing action returns to Thunder Road on Saturday, July 3 for Aubuchon Hardware Holiday Fireworks night. The event features a full card of action for the Thunder Road Late Models, Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Post time is 7:00 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids). The racing will be followed by a spectacular fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day!
