Announcement from Historic Festival Chairman and Lime Rock Park

FROM MURRAY SMITH
Ladies and Gentlemen & Fellow Enthusiasts,

We had an interesting day at Lime Rock Park last weekend when the Lime Rock Drivers Club took to the track. This happened with the understanding that they would observe very strict rules laid out in detailed protocols designed to protect everybody involved.

A good day was enjoyed by all and there was a welcome universal attitude displayed on the benefits of social distancing and the serious efforts made by the track to provide the physical safeguards possible to assure the safety of all concerned.

I must say, I did not hear any complaints about the rules put in place for the protection of all at the track, drivers, crew members and staff. This leads me to believe that if the standards we have imposed for ourselves are indeed universally observed then there is a good chance that we will be able to hold a 38th edition of the Historic Festival.

So, get your entries in soon with the assurances that we will not cash any checks or charge any credit cards until we are sure that the event will actually take place.
Race groups for 2020 will, at least, include these:• Pre-war • Medium Bore Sporting Cars • Large Bore Sporting Cars • Formula Fords  • Sports Racing Cars of the 50s and 60s• Formula Junior• Tin Tops  • GT Cars (Pre-2000)• Wings and Slicks• Sports 2000s• Lime Rock Drivers Club Miatas

Special Cars: The Festival will see a deluge of the very special cars and drivers, which like year’s past, make this event so successful. Amongst the entries already received is a very special one. It’s special because the car concerned is of the utmost importance in itself, and as far as I can remember, the only time that one has run in America in recent memory was when it was demonstrated by J.M Fangio himself at Laguna Seca many years ago.

The same team who built the Lancia D50 Grand Prix cars that ran at the Festival a few years ago, and were fueled by the enthusiasm of the late Peter Giddings with the support of the perennial Peter Greenfield, have seen the rebirth on an Alfa Romeo Type 158 Grand Prix car, which will also appear and race at the Festival this year. Believe me, you should all hear the noise that this amazing supercharged beast makes (1.5 litre, more or less like a TD MG with some 430 HP). A similar car was driven by the first post-war World Champion Nino Farina. It will be something to see and hear!

Virtual Concours: An additional reason for fun this year, while you are constrained to stay at home, is the organizing of a Virtual Concours d’ Elegance. Since you may be like some of my friends who are wondering what in the hell I am up to, let me explain.

In brief, there are times when I would rather be driving in my old car meeting and seeing pals with similar manias to mine…the love of driving, talking about cars and reading about cars. But in short, the automotive world is not very active. However, I detect a fierce flow of energy and interest out there. So let’s try a Concours d’ Elegance, which exists only because entrants want somewhere to indulge their imagination.

Imagine that you have up to three cars in your stable and you would like pit them against similar cars from around the world in a virtual contest of style beauty and provenance. The classes are simple:
·
Pre-War Sports and GT Car·      Post- War Sports and GT Cars·      Pre and Post war Competition Cars·      Touring Cars Pre-War·      Touring Cars post Aar

The war being the 1939 to 1945 World War. And, that’s it. If you want to add a special note to one of your entries you may under “provenance” for instance say 1963 Ferrari GTO, winner GT Class at Le Mans Driven by… You can also choose the color or colors of your car, and in the case of special coach work then define who did it.

A distinguished group of judges will peruse your entries and will select the winners of each class and then an overall winner, prizes will be awarded. Electronic entries only will be accepted, and a judging team will be announced shortly. Entries should be in by the 1st July and results will be announced by the 15th July.

Send Virtual Concours d’ Elegance entries* to: Historics@limerockpark.comInclude on the subject line of your email:

Virtual Concours 2020*See below for how to apply for the “real” Sunday in the Park Concours  I wish you all a happy summer in the hope that you will join the Festival and we will share in the fun and frolic on Labor Day. Send in your entries for the Lime Rock Park Race and for the “real” Sunday in the Park Concours soon, and for this silly notion of mine that we all have vivid imaginations and would love to dream of an ideal stable.
All the best and remain safe,Murray SmithHistoric Festival Chairman

Race Entry AnnouncementENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED In order to accommodate the rather unusual environment in which we are operating this year and the special conditions for which some of you may be facing, we wanted to let you know that we have moved the final date for entries from June 15 to July 15, and we would like to remind you that entry fees will not be deposited until that date.

Sunday In The Park Announcement:In keeping with the cautious optimism for this year’s 38th Historic Festival weekend, we have kicked off planning for the Sunday Concours and Gathering of the Marques. First and foremost amongst our priorities will be everyone’s safety. We have redesigned our event around a refined set of classes that maintains a focus on interesting classic, sports and racing cars, but, in keeping with our new and altered times, adds some additional classes, including a class for classic camping trailers – the ideal solution for social distancing.

We’re also going to feature French cars, a class for the Datsun/Nissan Z-cars in honor of the 240Z’s 50th anniversary and a class for unrestored and preserved cars. Finally, in honor of all those that have done so much to keep us safe during these challenging times, we will display a special exhibit of fire, police and emergency vehicles. The full list of updated classes will be posted shortly on the Sunday in the Park webpage.

For the Concours specifically, we will be using a peer judging approach, whereby the Best in Class and supplemental awards are determined by the members of each class, allowing us to maintain the spirit of fair competition while simplifying the judging process. We will maintain, however, our tradition of individual special awards for vehicles of unique interest, history or beauty, which will be determined by Chief Judge Bill Scheffler and colleagues on the field that day.

For this year only, we will be dropping the usual “skip a year” requirement of the past, which I hope will bring back some of the memorable cars that were on the field in 2019.

For the Gathering of the Marques, we will be working with each of the individual exhibitors and clubs to make sure that have prepared adequate space for them around the track.

I think we all understand that 2020 will be a unique year for the Historics. We recognize that many of you won’t have had much, if any, chance to experience that special enthusiasm that comes from the interaction of great cars and their owners, but safety is our top priority, so we will be providing regular updates on the status of Sunday in the Park as conditions dictate. In the meantime, the success of our event will largely depend on participation, so please get your entries into us as soon as possible . We look forward to seeing you in September! Be well and take care,

Lowell Paddock Sunday in the Park Concours BlogWe recently started featuring interesting stories about past Concours winners on LimeRock.com and we’ll soon introduce posts on noteworthy race entries from previous Festivals as well as cars that we expect to be joining us this year.

The most recent post features the Daimler SP-250 roadster belonging to Steve Busch, who owns 12 in total ranging from the award-winning version he showed at last year’s Sunday in the Park Concours to various parts cars. Even Without Fans in the Stands, Nascar Could Rake in Over $140 Million

Courtesy of AD Week

SPORTS MARKETING

ByMitch Reamesnascar trackThere’s still plenty of opportunity for brands even without filled racetracks.Getty Images

Key insight:

Two months ago, the sporting world ground to a halt all at once as the spread of the coronavirus forced leagues to shut down. Now, sports are finally starting to come back. First was South Korean baseball. Then Germany’s Bundesliga made a return. In the U.S., Nascar was the first major sport to fire the engines back up.

While games have returned, the fans have not. Screening players, coaches and broadcast crews for Covid-19 is possible, but fans pose a much more complicated safety issue. For brand-heavy Nascar, the lack of fans in the stands has opened up another revenue stream.

According to a report from GumGum Sports, in Nascar’s first race back, the new whitespace created in bleachers typically obscured by fans was worth about $3.4 million. Add in another $220,000 for the whitespace created by now mandatory masks, and the total added value is $3.62 million per race.Kyle Busch donned a branded mask after winning an event in Charlotte.Getty Images

While the masks provide a lot more human value, the brand value is in the bleachers. The cumulative potential sponsorship exposure of the added whitespace would be close to $140 million—with $132 million coming from the stands alone—when extended over an entire season if Nascar maintains strong viewership.

The first race back racked up 6.3 million viewers, but expecting those numbers throughout the season is unlikely: The race represented a 38% increase in viewership compared to the final race before the shutdown. But with sports fans starved for live events and Nascar the first sport back, viewership will stay high for at least a little while.

Nascar is synonymous with brands, and it’s done well with esports events to keep the series top of mind during quarantine. The cars are almost comically decked out in logos, as are the fire-resistant suits that drivers wear. Typical stadium signage circles every track as well. Ads are even put directly on the surface to target the fans in the stands.

GumGum Sports highlighted the pure value of the grandstand whitespace by comparing it to on-track ads during race broadcasts. In the first race, grandstands saw 510 exposures for a total of over 53 minutes of screen time. For comparison, the on-track logos had 84 exposures for just over 3 minutes of screen time. According to GumGum Sports, the grandstands offered a value nearly 30 times that of on-track brand marks.

Putting brands in the stands isn’t new to Nascar. With attendance declining drastically since its height in 2005 (Nascar stopped reporting attendance figures after the 2012 season), some tracks have filled the empty space with giant brand banners. Average TV viewership per Nascar Cup race in 2019 was just under 3 million, according to Statista.

Now, Nascar could turn declining attendance numbers into a lucrative branding opportunity. While the giant ads could feel out of place in some arenas in other sports, Nascar doesn’t have that same problem given the billboards on wheels that are the focal point of every race.

Montana Race Track Closes Permanently: Another casualty of the Corona Virus

27 MAY

Montana Race Track Closes Permanently

Montana Raceway Park, the home of the Montana 200 Super Late Model race, has closed permanently according to an announcement by the track on Tuesday.

“Through 30 years of racing as a cornerstone facility in the northwest there has been a lot of ups and downs,” the announcement reads.  “Today is the day where we announce that Montana Raceway Park will be closed permanently. This is not an easy decision like any decision where we know there will be heavy hearts but for the past few years there has been constant vandalism, declining fan bases and support. The COVID-19 crisis which has forced us to close our doors for the season will have an unsurvivable economic impact forcing our hand.”

While the track no longer has a Facebook page, a photo circulating on Facebook shows work is already underway to deconstruct the facility, including breaking up the racing surface near the start/finish line.

Montana Raceway Park cancelled its 2020 season in March during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.  At that time, it had not released a 2020 schedule.

The venue’s marquee event was the Montana 200 for Super Late Models. The event had taken on considerable prestige for Super Late Model competitors in the Northwest.

Lance Wade won the first Montana 200 in 1991, the same year the track opened.  Gary Lewis holds the record for most Montana 200 victories, with all four of his triumphs coming in consecutive years between 2007 and 2010.

Owen Riddle had positioned himself to challenge Lewis for a spot in the Montana 200 record books after winning the event last year.  Riddle’s 2019 victory gave him three Montana 500 wins in the past five years.

The venue was also known as one of the most scenic venues in short track racing.  Views of the Flathead Valley and the Rocky Mountains provided a picturesque backdrop for short track racing at the facility.

Lets Go Racing 100: Granite State Pro Stocks and Claremont Motorsports Park set for Friday night, June 5

GSPSS and Claremont Motorsports Park finally Going Racing

The Granite State Pro Stock Series and Claremont Motorsports Park are going racing… finally! Set for Friday, June 5 at 7 pm the sound of stock cars will return to Claremont NH as the facility will see competition for the first time in 2020.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, both the series and tracks schedules have been put on hold until now. Due to state of NH restrictions, fans will not be allowed in the grandstands but those wanting to witness this event will be able to do so via Speed51 pay per view. “We are really excited to be able to team up with our partners at speed51 and make this event happen”, stated series President Mike Parks. “While we wish we could have our loyal fans in the stands cheering our competitors on, it’s just not in the cards at this time.”

Three time Oxford 250 winner Travis Benjamin has filed an entry for the Claremont event. Benjamin will make the trip down from Belfast ME to get his racing fix at a track he has no experience on. “We want to get back to racing and Claremont is a track I’ve never raced on. I’ve been there helping Matt Frahm in the past so I know the track a little bit and it looks like a fun track,” said Benjamin. “I think it should be fun to try something different”.

Garrett Hall comes to Claremont looking to go two for two in GSPSS starts. Hall won the series lone visit to Oxford Plains Speedway in 2017. “My crew and I have been itching to get back to racing all winter, not to mention all spring,” said the Scarborough ME driver. “We all have the need for speed and want to go racing. Hopefully this will show that we can race within the distancing guidelines and will lead to more races.”  Hall then added, “I can’t wait to see the track not to mention race on it.”

Several of the series regular competitors will be in action on the fifth. Young guns Jimmy Renfrew Jr and Casey Call have filed entries. Renfrew is a former winner on the series while Call will be chasing rookie of the year honors.

Former Champions Mike O’Sullivan, Barry Gray and Devin O’Connell will be in action along with other veterans such as Jeremy Davis, DJ Shaw and Cory Casagrande.

Local hot shoe Luke Hinkley has entered as he looks to take home his first series win at his home town track. Hinkley and his team will win the short haul award as he will travel just a few miles from his home on the other side of Claremont.

As of this writing entries from five of the six New England states have been received as well as NY with more expected. “The response has been incredible,” Stated Parks during a recent break in preparations. “The racers just want to get back in action and we are excited to give them the opportunity to do so.”

With fans not being in attendance, Parks and his team had to figure out how to make this event work financially. Several companies have stepped up to help make it possible. Crazy Horse racing is in its second year presenting time trials for the series and kicked in money above and beyond to help make the Lets Go Racing 100 possible. Crazy Horse is New England’s official Port City Race Cars dealer selling and maintaining the full line of Port City cars and parts. Contact Micky, Mitch or Mickey Green with all of you questions or needs.

Other businesses who stepped up include R&R Public Wholesalers in Hooksett NH. They have recently started a speed shop catering to local racers in southern NH. Also supporting this event is R E Hinkley Oil Company. Hinkley’s is a long time supporter of the speedway through their oil, propane and plumbing sales and service outlet. In addition to their support of this event they are a divisional sponsor for the tracks weekly racing series.

Three support divisions will be on the card including The R E Hinkley street stocks as they will contest a 35 lap main event. The street stocks have become one of the most exciting and hotly contested divisions in southern NH and a stellar field of cars is expected as this will be the first opportunity for most, if not all of them to race in 2020

Also in action on June 5th will be the six shooters and pure stocks. “When deciding what divisions to run we really felt like we wanted to showcase our entry level divisions. The pure stocks have been solid here for several years and the six shooters are an up and coming division in our region,” said Parks. “We thought we should give them some glory and an opportunity to show their stuff.”

Six Shooter driver Jeremy Blood took to social media to express his excitement.  “I’m excited to get back to the track,” said Blood. “This isn’t Ideal but we have to work with what we’ve got… when life gives you lemons, make lemonade right?”

Action will start at 7:00 with the Crazy Horse Racing Fast Time Challenge followed by heat races for all four divisions. The Lets Go Racing 100 for the Granite State Pro Stock Series is scheduled to go off at 9:00.

For more information go to www.speed51.comwww.claremontmotorsportspark.net or all social media platforms for both Speed51 and the track.

McLaren cutting 1,200 jobs, F1 workers included!

The McLaren Group has announced plans to cut 1,200 jobs as a result of economic fallout tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, with roughly 70 layoffs anticipated for its Formula 1 team. The company’s NTT IndyCar Series project isn’t expected to be impacted.

A McLaren statement read: “Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the new Formula 1 cost cap to be introduced for the 2021 season, luxury automotive, motorsport and technology company McLaren Group has commenced a proposed restructure program as part of a wider business plan to ensure its long-term future success.

“Subject to employee consultation, the proposed restructure is expected to result in around 1,200 redundancies across the Group’s Applied, Automotive, and Racing businesses, as well as support and back office functions.”

McLaren furloughed staff when possible under the United Kingdom’s workforce rules, but a lack of car sales has the group searching to save additional funds heading through the remainder of 2020.
