Sal Accardi and Rich Schlegel excited for Bullring Bash

Pavement Modifieds at speed create a lot of excitement with New England fans. (Credit: NASCAR Home Tracks photo.)

There’s plenty of racers getting excited for June 16, when the Bullring Bash Quarter Mile Challenge presented by RaceChoice kicks off at White Mountain Motorsports Park. One driver-owner combination ready to get started is the modified race team run by Sal Accardi Jr. and Rich Schlegel.Despite not meeting until just a couple of years ago, Accardi and Schlegel have settled into their roles as the two full-time workers on the team. Accardi does the work behind the wheel and in the race shop, and Schlegel creates the setups, acts as crew chief, spots for Accardi during races, and chooses where to go for the next race.Interestingly enough, Accardi and Schlegel would not have met had it not been for sheer luck.“I used to drive part-time myself,” Schegel said. “I didn’t think I was a great driver. I posted an ad on Facebook looking for a driver.”Accardi saw the ad and sent Schlegel a message back. There were definitely concerns. Accardi had not been behind the wheel of a race car for eight years when the two began talking.

Accardi did, however, have plenty of experience racing at New York tracks like Riverhead for years prior.“I didn’t know Sal,” Schlegel said. “I was a little worried at first. But an engine builder I know in New York told me he was good.”That put away most worries. After talking, the two agreed to work together on a race team. There’s no commitment to a particular series for these two. They just love racing.“I don’t care where I drive,” Accardi said. “We bounce around, and wherever we can race, we race.”It was Schlegel who made the call to come to Bullring Bash.“The purse is attractive,” Schlegel said. “We’re almost breaking even just by showing up to the track. That’s good for small teams like us.”Schlegel expects the racing to be both close and action-packed, with three stages of ground-pounder action for the fans.“Towards that second stage and third stage, you’ll see the intensity pick up for sure with all the money on the line,” he said. The Bullring Bash Quarter Mile Challenge will have additional announcements regarding registered teams, sponsors, officials, and much more in the coming weeks.

Busy weekend set for PASS North racers at Oxford Plains

Source: Alan Dietz/PASS Tours PR

NAPLES, ME (May 29) – Another important stretch of races will be coming up over the next few weeks for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Model racers and it all begins this weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway.  After a weekend off to follow, the Hopkins Milling & Paving 150 at Speedway 95 will give racers the chance to get locked into the biggest race of the year as part of the “Road To The Oxford 250.” And then, June 22-23, PASS returns to New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon for the New England Short Track Showdown, the fourth PASS National Championship event of 2019.  But, before all that, Super Late Model racers will be busy at Oxford Plains on Saturday for a local show and then on Sunday for the Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150 for the PASS North Super Late Models.

Waterboro, ME’s Curtis Gerry will be one of the busiest drivers of all this weekend.  Gerry is in his first season competing for the track championship at Oxford Plains. While a former Oxford 250 winner himself, Gerry realizes competing on Saturday and Sunday could give him critical knowledge for August as he seeks his second career win in the big race.

“It’s a doubleheader weekend for us and it will be tough for sure,” says Gerry, driver of the Ripley & Fletcher Ford/Saco House of Pizza #7G. “We’re going to try and go for a win Saturday night and a PASS win on Sunday so we can hone our setup for the 250.”

Oxford Plains Speedway is one of the trickiest racetracks in the country and several drivers will be joining Gerry in racing on both Saturday and Sunday to try and maximize their chances on the challenging speedway.  A strong contingent of Maine drivers will be competing on Sunday including Scarborough’s Garrett Hall, winner of the most recent PASS race at Oxford Plains.  Joining him will be former 250 winners, Travis Benjamin, as well as Mike and Ben Rowe. Fellow Maine drivers Tim Brackett, Tracy Gordon, Reid Lanpher, Scott McDaniel and Kirk Thibeau are also currently entered. Defending track champion, Gabe Brown, will be in action as well as fellow New Hampshire drivers DJ Shaw and Derek Griffith.  Ray Christian will be coming from Connecticut, while Vermont’s Bobby Therrien and New York’s Michael Scorzelli will also be trying their hands at Oxford Plains.

All the action gets under way this weekendat Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday with local action beginning at 7 PM featuring the Super Late Models, Street Stocks, Bandits, Figure 8’s and Rookies.  On Sunday, heat races begin at 2 PM, followed by features for the PASS North Super Late Models, PASS Modifieds, and NELCAR Legends.

PASS Super Late Model entry forms for Oxford Plains Speedway and Speedway 95, along with the 46thAnnual Oxford 250 can be found at ProAllStarsSeries.com.

The Pro All Stars Series is recognized as North America’s premier sanctioning body for asphalt Super Late Models and boasts such marquee events as the legendary Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway, the Easter Bunny 150 at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway, and the PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond Raceway.

Kevin Gambacorta rebounding after early season misfortune

(Stafford Springs, CT)—After one month of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition at Stafford Speedway, Late Model driver Kevin Gambacorta has emerged as possibly the hottest driver at the Connecticut half-mile facility.  Gambacorta’s 2019 season has been up and down with the Ellington native already experiencing the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Gambacorta kicked off the 2019 season by piloting his #23 Lavigne Law / LifeCare Family Chiropractic Dodge to a victory, only to have the win taken away when he was disqualified for an illegal shock on his #23 machine.  Gambacorta hasn’t let the DQ keep him down and has rebounded with almost perfect results in the last three races with two second place finishes and a win.  During his 3-race hot streak, Gambacorta has had to charge through the field each Friday night thanks to the DQ removing him from the handicapping system used to determine the starting lineups.

“It was pretty upsetting because we’ve never been disqualified for anything before,” said Gambacorta.  “We just had to move past it and prove that the problem wasn’t the reason why we won that race.  It wasn’t too tough to come back to the track.  We really did our homework over the winter and we wanted to show everyone that and give people something else to talk about rather than the race we got DQ’d.”

Through the first four races of the 2019 season, Gambacorta and the #23 team have been the dominant Late Model car. Gambacorta went from 16thto 2nd on May 11, 10th to 2nd on May 17, and last Friday won after starting from 13th.  With the Late Model division changing tire compounds over the winter, Gambacorta feels right at home while other teams are still trying to find the sweet spot with their car setups to match the early season pace that Gambacorta has shown.

“Over the winter when they switched to the tires we’re running now I thought it might be to my advantage based on my car and my driving style,” said Gambacorta.  “I feel like the last couple years the slick tires may have helped some drivers make up a lot if they didn’t have a good handling car.  Other than Tom Fearn last year, I feel like we had the best car in the division.  It has been a little surprising that we’ve been able to drive through the field each week.  I was chatting with Jay Stuart the other day and we kind of lucked into how our car works with these new tires.  Other times when we’ve switched tires we’ve had to start all over again with the car, but what we have going on right now is working very well.”

Gambacorta is no stranger to winning championships at Stafford as he has won 3 track championships (2004 DARE Stock, 2006 & 2011 Limited Late Model).  With his early season disqualification leaving him with 0 points, Gambacorta has come to the track each week since not worrying or thinking about points, which has almost been a blessing in disguise.

“This season is the most fun I’ve ever had driving,” said Gambacorta.  “I work on the car every week and I start to doubt myself in the shop and then we go out for practice and the car is still good so I’ve got to work on getting that out of my head.  I have to take advantage of this while I can because guys like Tommy Fearn are going to figure things out eventually.  We gave everyone a head start this season and we’re slowly working our way out of the hole.  I look at the standings after the races on a Friday night to see where we are but I’m not overthinking anything.  When we were racing for championships in the DARE Stock and Limited Late Model divisions, I would worry about every two points here and there.  I’ve never raced like this before, but I’m pretty comfortable not worrying about points.”

The key for Gambacorta and his #23 team will be to see if they can maintain their high level of performance throughout the entirety of the 2019 season.  After his disqualification left him with 0 points and a 50 point gap to the leaders, Gambacorta has chopped that deficit down to 34 points over the last three races and if he can maintain his level of performance, he just might be making history at the end of the year.

“I think that we can keep on going,” said Gambacorta.  “We have a pretty good handle on the car setup and every week we check the car.  We’re already where we need to be with the season changing so when it gets hot and slick during the summer, the car might be even a little better than it is right now.  If we can put together a season like Tommy Fearn had last year, it could be pretty good at the end of the year.  It’s been a long time since we won a championship and no one has ever won championships in 3 different divisions, so that’s something I would love to accomplish one day but if it doesn’t happen, I’m not going to get too disappointed about it.  We’re going to keep on racing as hard as we can until they tell us that we’re mathematically out of contention.  I have to give a big thanks to our sponsors Lavigne Law Firm and LifeCare Family Chiropractic, and we have two new sponsors that came on board with us this season with Cold Creek Tavern and Neil’s Fine Wine & Liquors.”

Gambacorta will look to add another podium finish to his 2019 results this Friday night, May 31, which is Military Appreciation Night with Fireworks.  Tickets for this Friday night’s Military Appreciation Night program are $20.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids 6-14, and as always 5 & under free.  Any active or reserved military members can get a general admission ticket at the gates with proper I.D. for only $10.00.  Reserved seating is priced at $23.00 for all ages. All tickets include 10% CT Admission Tax.  General admission gates open at 5:15pm, with qualifying races beginning at 6:15pm and feature races to follow.

U.S. Stars Ready for Quebec Doubleheader

Top ACT U.S. racers like Brandon Atkins (#4NY) will travel to Quebec this weekend to take on the best of Canada, such as Alexendre Tardif (#21BC) in a twin bill of racing. (Alan Ward photo)

Waterbury, VT – The best of the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) is ready to head north this weekend. The Claude Leclerc 150 at Vallée-Jct., QC’s Autodrome Chaudiere on Saturday, June 1 and the Jean-Paul Cabana 125 at Circuit Riverside Speedway Ste-Croix on Sunday, June 2 are shaping up as a triumphant return to la belle province for the region’s premier Late Model touring series.

The biggest U.S. stars of the ACT Late Model Tour will be in Vallée-Jct. this Saturday racing for the $5,000 USD top prize, including two-time defending champion Scott Payea, current point leader Rich Dubeau, previous Canada winner Jimmy Hebert, and top rookie Stephen Donahue. Others such as former ACT Rookie of the Year Brandon Atkins, defending Seekonk Speedway Champion Ryan Kuhn, and rising star Christopher Pelkey are making the trek for the first point-counting ACT Late Model Tour event in Canada since 2015.

While the Jean-Paul Cabana 125 the following day does not count for points, many U.S. drivers are expected to stay over and fire up the engines once again on Sunday. That event pays $5,000 CAD to win, meaning it could be a lucrative trip abroad for one or more racers.

“The doubleheader part of it is pretty cool,” Atkins said. “We’re looking forward to doing a two-race Saturday-Sunday deal. We’ve never done that in the same car. We did that a couple years ago with the Modified and Late Model at Airborne and Thunder Road, but we’ve never done two big races in the same weekend back-to-back. It’s an old-school sort of thing. I remember hearing about the Tour doing that back in the day, but it hasn’t happened for quite a while.”

For some, more than just money is on the line. The point battle is already looking like it will once again come down to the final laps. Plainfield, NH’s Dubeau and Williamstown, VT’s Hebert sit one-two in the standings as both chase their first touring championship. But Payea is just 26 points out of first after winning the Spring Green at White Mountain Motorsports Park. Graniteville, VT’s Donahue and Chip Grenier, Blainville, QC’s Mathieu Kingsbury, and Milton, VT’s Dylan Payea are among the others who could put themselves in title contention with a strong performance on Saturday.

But in the end, winning is still the main thing. The doubleheader will be two of the biggest stock car racing events of the year in Quebec – and for ACT Late Models as a whole. For drivers such as Dubeau, Atkins, Donahue, Pelkey, Dylan Payea and Kuhn who are still seeking their first ACT-sanctioned win, capturing it on such a huge stage would be an even bigger deal.

“That would be awesome,” Atkins said. “We’ve had really good cars at both places. At Ste-Croix, we’ve never really had good luck – we’ve been caught up in some skirmishes, and sometimes, finishing is the first goal. But at Chaudiere, we had a really good car when we raced there (in 2015). We finished seventh, and we’d never even seen the place before that race. So we have some good notes to start with. To get our first ACT-sanctioned win anywhere would be really cool, but doing it up there would be excellent – especially if it was night number one. I can’t think of a better momentum-builder for a second race than a win on the first night!”

Of course, the U.S. racers must beat out some stout Canadian competition on their home turf. St-Denis, QC’s Patrick Laperle, one of the most accomplished Late Model racers in Quebec history, headlines their side of the entry list. Lanoraie, QC’s Claude Leclerc will attempt to qualify for his namesake race as will Kingsbury and former Série ACT Champion Jonathan Bouvrette. Quebec City’s Jean-Francois Dery, another former ACT Quebec champion, will be at Sunday’s Jean-Paul Cabana 125.

Many of Autodrome Chaudiere’s weekly NASCAR Late Model runners, who run under ACT rules, have also entered the Claude Leclerc 150. They include defending track champion Samuel Charland, top runners Jeff Cote and Christophe Paquet, and youngster Alexendre Tardif. Add in former Série ACT racers like Marc-Andre Cliché who are dusting off their Late Models, and the two events could see some of the biggest car counts of the year for ACT.

The doubleheader begins with the Claude Leclerc 150 at Vallée-Jct., QC’s Autodrome Chaudiere on Saturday, June 1 at 5:45pm. The ACT Late Model Tour is joined by a 75-lap Série Sportsman Quebec event plus the track’s NASCAR Sport Compact Amateur class. The pits open at 12:00 pm and the front gates open at 3:00 pm. Admission is $38 CAD ($30 USD) for adults and free for ages 17 and under.

ACT then heads to Circuit Riverside Speedway Ste-Croix on Sunday, June 2 at 1:00pm for the Jean-Paul Cabana 125. That event also includes a 50-lap feature for the NASCAR Série Procam Super Trucks and a combination race for the Sport Compact Amateur and Elite classes. Pits open at 8:30am with the front gates at 10:00am. Admission is $40 CAD ($35 USD) for adults and free for ages 17 and under.

Martinsville announces return of Whelen Modified Tour in 2020

For the first time since 2010, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to Martinsville Speedway in 2020 for the MaxPro Window Films 200.

The modifieds, which were a fixture at Martinsville for decades, will race the 200 lap race on Friday Night May 8, 2020 as part of the spring race weekend.

“We get asked a lot about the modifieds a lot – from fans, from drivers, from media,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “Now, we can say, ‘Yes, we will have them back next year.’ These cars are such an important part of Martinsville Speedway history and the time is right to bring them back.”

North Carolina-based Maxpro Window Films, an industry leader in window film, has signed on to sponsor the race.

“Maxpro Window Films is excited to be a supporter of and partner with Martinsville Speedway and NASCAR,” Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Elizabeth Dillon said. “Not only are NASCAR fans a natural market for Maxpro’s automotive line of window films, but a lot of our employees and management team have deep roots in the Martinsville and Henry County area and we are proud to be associated with an organization with the history and tradition of Martinsville Speedway, so it’s a good fit for Maxpro.

“The modifieds have always been a fan favorite at Martinsville and Maxpro is thrilled to welcome them back for the Maxpro Window Films 200 and to sponsor their return. It’s always an exciting race and having it under the lights will be special. We look forward to an exciting weekend and we are thrilled to be part of it.”

The modified division first raced at Martinsville in 1960 and raced every year through 2002. Virginian Ray Hendrick, who also is the career leader in overall wins at Martinsville with 20, is the all-time leader in modified wins at Martinsville with 15. NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans is second with 10.

“The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and Martinsville Speedway are a perfect match,” said Brandon Thompson, NASCAR Managing Director, Touring Series. “When you talk history and legacy – names like Evans, Cook and Bodine are synonymous with Martinsville. The Modified division and Martinsville Speedway are the cornerstones on which the sport was built. We’re excited about adding names like Coby, Bonsignore, and maybe even Preece – a new generation of Modified racing stars to the half-mile and look forward to being part of an incredible race weekend.”

In qualifying for a 1986 modified event, Greg Sacks set the Martinsville Speedway track record for all divisions with a one-lap average of 101.014 miles-per-hour, a record that still stands.

The MaxPro Window Films 200 will add to an already exciting 2020 season at the historic half-mile speedway. The NASCAR Cup Series race will be under the lights in the spring, and the NASCAR Xfinity Series will return to the Speedway for the first time since 2006 as part of a triple-header weekend in the fall that will be the final race before the Championship Round of the NASCAR Playoffs for all three national touring series.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever felt this much excitement about an upcoming season at Martinsville Speedway,” Campbell said. “From the fans to competitors and media, it’s industry-wide excitement and we are all really looking forward to it.”

Racing returns to Martinsville Speedway this fall with two race weekends.

First is the ValleyStar Credit Union 300, the biggest, richest and most prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Race in the country on October 5.

The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will return for the NASCAR Playoffs the weekend of October 25-27.

Tickets to both race weekends are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or online at www.martinsvillespeedway.com.

Hayden to Race the No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha at Saturday’s Red Mile

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 29, 2019) – Just days before the running of American Flat Track‘s first Mile race of 2019, a new entry to the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines class is making waves in the professional flat track community. Roger Lee Hayden – former MotoAmerica professional road racer and brother to fellow pros Nicky and Tommy Hayden – will race the No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT as a substitute for JD Beach during Saturday’s Indian Motorcycle of Lexington Red Mile in Lexington, Ky

Beach, who is missing this round to race the fourth event of the MotoAmerica series at Road America, will return to AFT for the Lima Half-Mile on June 29. For Red Mile, Hayden, a fellow Kentucky native and longtime friend of Beach, has opted to come out of retirement, and return to his flat track roots, to compete in this hometown round of AFT. With more than 20 years of professional racing experience to his credit, Hayden announced his retirement from racing in early 2018 while competing in the MotoAmerica series aboard the No. 95 Yoshimura Suzuki. Although entered under the No. 195, AFT officials have permitted the No. 95 number plates to remain on the motorcycle as a symbol of solidarity between the machine’s two respective pilots. “I’m really excited because it’s going to be a special weekend for the family,” said Hayden.

“My parents are Grand Marshals, and to have Tommy [Hayden] as my team manager is definitely really cool. I feel like it’s going to be a great weekend for the family, getting back to dirt track racing and having a dollar from each ticket sale going to Nicky’s Memorial Foundation. I’ve never raced a national in Kentucky, so it will be awesome to see all the Kentucky fans there – they’ll have a Kentucky boy to root for.” “AFT is delighted to welcome Roger to compete, particularly on such an auspicious weekend, said Michael Lock, CEO of American Flat Track. “The Red Mile is hosting our first Mile of the season and this announcement ratchets up the anticipation to the next level.”

Fans can look forward to seeing nearly the entire Hayden family present at Saturday’s Indian Motorcycle of Lexington Red Mile event, as Roger Lee’s parents Earl and Rose Hayden will serve as the event’s Grand Marshals.  American Flat Track’s Indian Motorcycle of Lexington Red Mile is one of the most anticipated races on the circuit, and it all takes place at the famous Red Mile on Saturday, June 1, 2019.

JJOLIET, Ill. (May 28) – NHRA’s best Sportsman drivers will battle for class and divisional honors this weekend at the 35th annual JEGS Allstars, a special event held during the Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

The 35th annual JEGS Allstars event is always a highlight of the season. The JEGS Allstars competition crowns individual champions in 10 separate eliminators, as well as an overall team champion. A highlight of the drag racing season for three and a half decades, the JEGS Allstars event features a total purse of more than $150,000, making it one of the richest events of its kind.  Racers can only qualify for the prestigious event by earning points in their home divisions during year-long battles in the following NHRA Lucas Oil categories; Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman. For the 80 racers who have qualified for the special event, winning an individual title at the JEGS Allstars race is a tremendous achievement, but being a part of the winning overall team is extra-special. Last year, the team from the South Central Division (D4) turned in a dominant performance to win their seventh overall team title. In addition to a share of the six-figure jackpot, the Division 4 team members each received a handcrafted trophy from master sculptor Dan Dreisbach of Naked Sculpture. This year’s JEGS Allstars event will feature competitors representing 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. There are also 13 former or current NHRA national champions in the field.  The Division 4 team figures to have a strong chance of defending their title with last year’s Super Stock winner Aaron Stanfield returning as a blocker. Stanfield will be joined by world champions Craig Bourgeois (Comp) and Jeff Lopez (Stock).  Several years ago, the Top Alcohol competition was divided among four regions rather than the traditional seven divisions, and JEGS immediately devised a plan to keep the popular cars in the Allstars competition. As a result, Top Alcohol teams will compete for a special “regional” trophy, also designed by Dreisbach. The Alcohol fields are stacked with the likes of past national champions Joey Severance, Duane Shields and Shane Westerfield, as well as sisters Rachel and Megan Meyer, two of the six female drivers in the field.  The winners in Top Alcohol were all smiles  after securing their trophies.

The Northeast Division team is anchored by world champions Frank Aragona Jr. and Doug Doll Jr. (Comp), and Iggie Boicesco (Super Gas), as well as past Allstar winner James Antonette (Super Stock). The Division 2 team will pin their hopes on two-time Allstars champ Mike Crutchfield in Super Stock, who joins world champs John Labbous in Super Gas and Jeff Strickland in Top Dragster. Current points leader Ray Miller III also is a member of the D2 team in Super Comp. The host team from the North Central Division once again boasts a stacked line-up that includes current Super Gas champion Devin Isenhower as well as defending Super Street winner Phil Smida and veteran Super Stock racer Jeff Dona. The Division 5 team didn’t win their first overall title until 2014 but they added a second in 2016 and they could easily add a third this year thanks to a talented squad that includes Wyatt Wagner (Super Stock), Chris Chaney (Stock), and Top Sportsman specialist JR Lobner. The team from the Northwest Division has not won the overall title since 2005 but that could change this season thanks to a talented crew that includes the husband-wife duo of Mick and Jackie Alley in Stock and Super Stock, respectively, and veteran Ralph Van Paepeghem in Comp. The gang from the Pacific Division, who last claimed the overall title in 2012, will be looking to regain the top spot and there is no reason to think they won’t be able to get it done with a core group that includes five-time world champ Justin Lamb, who is pulling double-duty in Super Stock and Stock, as well as defending event champs Ryan Mangus (Stock), and Ken Mostowich (Super Gas).  Any racer who can win Saturday’s JEGS Allstar title and then return on Sunday to win the Route 66 Nationals in the same class will be eligible for the JEGS double-up bonus. While the JEGS Allstars is a highlight competitive event, camaraderie between racers and their crews is evident, especially during Friday evening’s racer appreciation barbecue which is open to all of the JEGS Allstars competitors, their families and crews.  The 2018 individual class winners receive checks and hardware from NHRA President Glen Cromwell.
