Scott Palmer preps for this weekend’s Four-Wide Nationals by driving his Studebaker

Note: The NHRA Nationals will make it’s annual stop at the New England Dragway in Epping, NH over the July 4 2019 weekend . The big racing circus will include alll of the big names who race on that coast-to-coast circuit.

Scott Palmer preps for this weekend’s
Four-Wide Nationals by driving his Studebaker

CONCORD, N.C. (April 25) — Top Fuel driver Scott Palmer’s preparation for this weekend’s 10th annual NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals included cruising Tulsa in his Studebaker. This comes on the heels of his interesting lead-in to the Houston race, which was highlighted by a cross-country search for mojo. “That Studebaker is my golf game,” said Palmer, a drag racing throwback that still tunes his own race cars, including the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent Top Fuel dragster he’ll race in Charlotte. “Everybody else golfs to relax. That car is what makes me smile.” To be clear, Palmer’s Studebaker isn’t quite like the one grandpa drove. His has a Top Fuel engine poking out of the hood and he dreams of making it run the quarter-mile in less than five seconds at speeds of more than 300 mph. It’s a car Palmer tinkers with on occasion and admittedly the project has gotten a tad out of control. “It’s so crazy and outrageous,” Palmer said. “It doesn’t even make sense what we’ve done to that car, putting a Top Fuel motor in a door car like that. We have a great time with it, though, every time we roll it out and it gets me back to my center. “Since we didn’t have much time off after Houston I decided to load the car up, drive to Oklahoma and make a couple of runs. We made some changes to make it more aggressive and it ended up being way too aggressive. We’ve had runs that made it further down the track but that doesn’t matter. We had a lot of fun. Like I said, it’s my golf game.” Going to Tulsa Raceway Park was a hit of the reset button for Palmer, who earned his first payday as a driver at the facility. “In the early ’90s Tulsa Raceway Park was the first place that ever gave me money to come down and show off at their Midnight Drags event. All of us from Springfield (Mo.) went to the Midnight Drags about once a month and always had a great time. That time they paid me to be there was when I first got the idea I could do this for a living and survive. At the very least it gave me hope to keep trying.  “When you go back to where you started you remember why you race. It’s because you love it, not for anything else. It makes you realize how lucky you are to get to run at this level with NHRA too. It makes you appreciate everything that much more.” With his mind fully cleared and refocused, Palmer was able to speak on this weekend’s four-wide event with optimism. “I love the track at Charlotte and I love the four-wide thing,” Palmer said. “I think it’s cool. We are ready to go and race. We have some things to show off. “We learned a lot in Houston. Darren Mayer and his team at DMPE took our blowers and worked on them and it definitely made a big improvement. That in turn makes us need to work on our clutch program to compensate for the added power. We are just working on that now, which in the long run will make us quicker and faster.”

ACT Late Model stars ready to open 2019 title chase

Some of the biggest names in ACT Late Model racing will be at Oxford Plains Speedway this Sunday, April 28 for the season opener, from former Serie ACT Champion Jean-Francois Dery (#21QC) to defending ACT Rookie of the Year Dylan Payea (#7NH). (Alan Ward photo)

Waterbury, VT – The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) is just days away from its 2019 championship opener at Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway. The Oxford 150 on Sunday, April 28 at 1:30pm lifts the lid on a season that has attracted many of the biggest names in Northeast Late Model racing.

A big field is expected for this weekend’s event as teams across New England, New York, and Quebec are eager to get the season underway. Many ACT Late Model teams got an early start on 2019 by making the trip to Virginia’s Richmond Raceway in March for the Commonwealth Classic. But for others, Oxford is their first event following a long off-season that has them itching to put the throttle down – especially after the event was postponed two weeks due to winter effects.

“I’m definitely ready to get the season started after this little delay,” defending ACT Rookie of the Year Dylan Payea of Milton, VT said. “I’m really excited this year. We have a new car that we’re going to bring to Oxford, so we’re really hoping that we can get a strong run. We’ve also picked up some more sponsor help and more help at the track, so building off last year, I’d definitely like to compete for a few wins. Hopefully we can at least get on the podium. Last year, our goals were top-10s, and this year I want to try for top-5s.”

The Oxford field will be a who’s-who for Late Model fans in the region. Three former ACT Champions have officially committed to Sunday’s event. Two-time defending ACT Champion Scott Payea of Colchester, VT, three-time ACT Champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. of Dover, NH, and 2014 Champion Joey Polewarczyk are all are expected to be at the track. Payea and Helliwell are looking for another championship plaque and know a strong start to the season is crucial.

But they’ll be far from the only notables in the pits this weekend. Two former Série ACT Champions, Blainville, QC’s Jonathan Bouvrette and Quebec City’s Jean-François Déry, have filed full-season ACT entries. A number of former weekly Late Model championships will be on hand, including multi-time White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion Quinny Welch, 2017 Thunder Road Champion Bobby Therrien, 2018 Seekonk Speedway Champion Ryan Kuhn, Canaan Fair Speedway and Claremont Speedway Champion Rich Dubeau, and Speedway 51 Champion Corey Mason.

Most of the top ACT Late Model Tour regulars from 2018 are ready for another season. Williamstown, VT’s Jimmy Hebert can almost taste his first ACT championship after being in the thick of last year’s title hunt. Veteran Chip Grenier of Graniteville, VT stated recently that he has found some additional horsepower after resolving ignition problems over the winter. All of last year’s rookie class is returning, including Payea, Christopher Pelkey, and Reilly and Peyton Lanphear. And, of course, garage favorite Jimmy Linardy of Salem, MA is back in the saddle once again.

There will be plenty of other drivers who are either already household names or could be before the weekend is over. Lanoraie, QC’s Claude “The Ironman” Leclerc is part of a Canadian contingent that also includes youngsters Jean-Phillippe Bergeron and Mathiew Kingsbury. Longtime ACT racer Rowland Robinson Jr. is getting geared up in his home state while rising weekly star Stephen Donahue tackles Oxford for the first time. Mike Foster, Trent Goodrow, Jason Larivee Jr., Joel Hodgdon and many more will roll through the gates to finally get the point-counting season on the track.

The Oxford 150 is the start of a packed early-season schedule for ACT. The schedule calls for three events in 14 days with the Community Bank N.A. 150 on Sunday, May 5 and the Caron Fabrication Spring Green 119 on Saturday, May 11. Drivers will have their own approaches to navigating this fast-paced stretch and reaching the end of it with their season-long goals intact.

“As a driver, I’m going to have to do a lot of what I did last year,” Dylan Payea said. “Last year, I had to carry it through the whole season. This year, we’re going to have to do three weeks here of just trying to survive, take what we can get and what the car gives us, and not try to push anything. We have three weeks in a row, so there’ll be some quick turnarounds.”

The ACT Late Model Tour opens its 2019 season Sunday, April 28 at 1:30pm with the Oxford 150 at Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway. The five-division card also includes the Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150 for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models along with PASS Modifieds, Honey Badger Street Stock Series, and North East Mini Stock Tour. Admission is $25 for adults, $12 for kids ages 6-12, and $60 for a family of four (two adults, two kids). An optional practice day is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 beginning at 10:00am.

Mix Of Veterans, Upcoming Stars Chasing Seekonk Sports Trucks Title

By Kyle Souza/SeekonkSpeedway.com

SEEKONK, Mass. — With the last two champions in the Seekonk Sports Trucks division planning to move to the Late Models, the 2019 season will likely see a brand new champion crowned. Although there will be some drivers returning who do have championship experience in the class, a mix of veterans looking for their first title are going to be closely followed by upcoming stars looking to make a name for themselves.

At the top of the veterans list, Mike Cavallaro, a former seven-time champion in the division, is registered back behind the wheel of his No. 80 Truck. Cavallaro, a native of Seekonk, Massachusetts, has the most experience of anyone in the class and will look to use it to his advantage once again this season. But, on the side of veterans, Cavallaro is joined by another former champion and a long-standing veteran in the list of registered competitors.

Rick Martin, a former Sports Truck and Pro Stock champion at Seekonk, has registered the No. 14 for competition, as he will look to dabble some competition in the Trucks with action in Seekonk’s top class. Barry Shaw Jr., another veteran who has come close to winning the title the last few years, is also coming back looking to finally seal the deal.

It might be hard to call them veterans, but drivers like Ed Perry, David Simpson Sr., and Andrew Kun have been around the block in this class. Kun is the defending Rookie of the Year in the division, and his father, Mike, is stepping away from the Pro Stock technical inspection staff to help get his Truck steered closer to the front of the field. Perry and Simpson both have shown plenty of promise in the division, while a name like Darryl Church is someone else fans should watch as one to have plenty of laps in the class.

But, the upcoming stars list might have them all outnumbered. Moving up from the Fast Friday Series, defending Seekonk Grand Prix Bandolero Outlaw champion Evan Marchand is looking to take his talent to Saturday nights. Marchand, a Somerset, Massachusetts, driver, has been a success on Friday for many years, winning plenty of races and championships as a young driver. With his experience turning laps at the third-mile, and the pure racing knowledge in his family, watch for him to catch on quick.

Richie Murray will continue the tradition of Saturday night competitors in the Murray family as he moves from

the Sport 4 class up to the Sports Trucks. Murray, much like his additional family members, already has built quite the resume early in his career. Winning two races last year, including the finale at the D.A.V. Fall Classic, Murray moves to the Truck that Josh Hedges won the championship with last year.

Connor Souza, who was a winner last year in the Bandolero Outlaw class, is moving up and taking over controls of the No. 38 that Ed Gagnon drove last year. Souza, much like Marchand and Murray, has already made a name for himself in the Fast Friday Series and looks to continue that trend to Saturday.

Right with them, two females enter their new season looking to continue to gain more experience behind the wheel. Maddie Harkin and Brittany Campbell both are ready with their Trucks looking to add their names to the list of Sports Truck winners. Names like Nick Mattera, Elias Dib, Anatasia Lebrun and former Sport 4 competitor Christine Cavallaro are also on the list of drivers looking to grab the checkered flag early this season.

As always, there will likely be additional Trucks who join the field throughout the season.

The 2019 Seekonk Sports Truck Series begins on Sunday, May 5, as part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series opener at Seekonk Speedway.

NHMS to host world’s top engineering students for 13th Formula Hybrid competition

Headlines Header

The world’s top engineering students will design and build earth-friendly cars as part of the 13th Formula Hybrid Competition, April 29 – May 2.Wednesday, April 24, 2019NHMS PR Official Release19Shares

Formula Hybrid 2018

Hundreds of the world’s top engineering students are expected to arrive at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Dartmouth’s one-of-a-kind 13th annual Formula Hybrid Competition, April 29 – May 2 ready to put the earth-friendly hybrid and electric vehicles they designed and built over the last 10 months to the test.

This year’s 20 teams hail from Canada, India and across the U.S. Their eight hybrid and 12 electric vehicles will need to pass numerous technical and safety inspections in order to make it on to “The Magic Mile.”

Many top engineering students engage in this technical competition because they want to collaborate with a team to build something highly complex and important not only to them but to the future of the world. Another perk of the competition is the chance to be scouted for an engineering job by top car manufacturers and other high-tech companies from across the country, including Toyota, the official car and truck of New Hampshire Motor Speedway, BAE, AVL and McLaren Applied Technologies.

“Participating in Formula Hybrid specifically is like a vote for a more sustainable future,” said Annika Garbers, chief mechanical engineer for the all-female Rochester Institute of Technology team Hot Wheelz. “When we design our car to perform well with sustainability in mind, it’s 1) educating the next generation of engineers to be prepared to work on hybrid and electric technology in the automotive industry and 2) proving that electric and hybrid vehicles can perform as well as and better than traditional IC [internal combustion] cars.”

Similar to the Formula SAE® competition, students compete in aspects of design, acceleration, handling and endurance of their vehicle while abiding by rules that minimize risk and preserve students’ freedom to innovate. At Formula Hybrid, they also have to optimize energy efficiency and incorporate sustainable materials when building their vehicles.

“We are the only hybrid competition of its kind,” said Douglas Fraser, founder of Formula Hybrid and senior research engineer and laboratory instructor at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, which runs the event. “There are competitions that look a lot like ours, but those vehicles are gasoline powered or powered entirely by electricity. We are the only competition that combines the two, with a gasoline engine on one side and electric power on the other. Blending the output can be done any number of ways. Students have to work together and decide which system gets to do what. It’s pretty tricky.”

As a result, Formula Hybrid is the only competition that requires a unique collaboration between mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and computer scientists in the planning and building of their cars.

For outside spectators, Wednesday, May 1 is the “most fun-filled” day to visit, according to Jessica Kinzie, the competition’s coordinating manager. The autocross and acceleration events run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s also Formula Hybrid School Day for middle and high school students who enjoy guided tours with volunteers from the SCCA New England Section and other knowledgeable experts. For more information and a complete schedule, please visit the competition website.

About Formula Hybrid

Similar to Formula SAE®, students compete in aspects of design, acceleration, handling and endurance of their vehicle and abide by a list of rules that focus on minimizing risk while preserving students’ freedom to innovate. Formula Hybrid teams, however, are faced with the additional challenge of optimizing both energy efficiency and sustainability of materials used in their cars. Founded by Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, Formula Hybrid has been awarded one of the most coveted prizes in engineering education, the ABET Innovation Award.

About Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth

Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth prepares leaders for a technology-driven world while solving pressing, real-world problems through research and entrepreneurship. Consistently ranked among the top colleges and universities for its commitment to teaching, Dartmouth is the first national research university to graduate a majority-female class of undergraduate engineers. Big weekend In store for New England race fans at Oxford Plains

Pro All Star Super Late Models in action

NAPLES, ME (April 25) – For Maine race fans the wait is finally over as short track racing returns to Oxford Plains Speedway this weekend.  Following a postponement two weeks ago due to snow still being on the ground, the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Models will make their first stop of the season in Maine on Sunday for the Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150.  And if that’s not enough, a full slate of weekly racing at Oxford Plains Speedway will kick off on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM, featuring the Super Late Models. The PASS Modifieds will have their first action of the season on Saturday and Sunday as well.  And, to cap it all off, the “Road To The Oxford 250” begins on Saturday on the opposite side of the map in Washington state at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval and then on Sunday it continues with the PASS race at Oxford Plains.

Memorable PASS North finishes at Oxford Plains are part of the track’s legend. In the 2016 Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150, three of the biggest names in PASS history battled three-wide late in the going to determine the victor.  The all-time winningest driver in PASS, Ben Rowe, prevailed over six-time series champion, Johnny Clark, and three-time champion, DJ Shaw, in one of the most exciting finishes Maine race fans have ever seen.  Last year, Curtis Gerry held off Cassius Clark and Travis Benjamin for the win at Oxford Plains.  Perhaps that could be a precursor for Gerry, who will be competing full-time at Oxford Plains in 2019 in the track’s weekly Super Late Model division.

As if that were not enough for the motorsports-hungry fans of New England, the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models will officially begin their championship season on Sunday at Oxford.  Nearly 40 ACT Late Models competed in a non-points race at Richmond Raceway in March and another stacked field is expected to fill the already crowded pit area.  And, after seeing nearly 50 cars take the green flag at Richmond, the North East Mini Stock Tour (NEMST) will compete this amazing weekend of action.

The field forSunday afternoon’s Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150 is full of potential winners, featuring former Oxford 250 winners, Ben Rowe, Travis Benjamin, Curtis Gerry, and Glen Luce.  Former PASS champions, Johnny Clark, DJ Shaw, Mike Rowe, and Derek Griffith are entered, as well as top series runners like Tracy Gordon, Bryan Kruczek, Reid Lanpher, and Garrett Hall.  Defending Oxford Plains Speedway track champion, Gabe Brown, is entered, along with fellow Oxford regulars Tim and TJ Brackett, Scott McDaniel, John Peters, and Ryan Robbins.  ACT Late Model champion Nick Sweet is entered, along with fellow Vermonter, Evan Hallstrom.  Among the drivers entered from Canada are New Brunswick’s Ashton Tucker and Nova Scotia’s Cole Butcher.

All the action gets under way on Saturday at Oxford Plains Speedway with open practice for all competing divisions starting at 10 AM, followed by PASS Modifieds, Oxford Plains Super Late Models and other local division racing at 4 PM. On Sunday, racing is slated to begin at 1:30 PM for the PASS North Super Late Models, PASS Modifieds, ACT Late Models and NEMST.

The Honey Badger Bar & Grill is located on the grounds of Oxford Plains Speedway will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

PASS Super Late Model entry forms for this weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway and the 46thAnnual Oxford 250 can be found at ProAllStarsSeries.com.

The Pro All Stars Series is recognized as North America’s premier sanctioning body for asphalt Super Late Models and boasts such marquee events as the legendary Oxford 250at Oxford Plains Speedway, Easter Bunny 150 at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway, and the PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond Raceway.

“The Intrepid Fallen Heroes fund is very important to all of us here at NAPA,”explained Greco.  “The fund provides support for soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty or are working through PTSD. The annual track walk has been a fun way to raise money for a great cause over the last 5 years. Last season’s walk had an outstanding turnout and we look forward to holding the walk again this summer.”

Thanks to NAPA Auto Parts and NAPA Know How, the 2019 season at Stafford is shaping up to be another banner year with NAPA Auto Parts and their over 70 participating locations throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The NAPA Spring Sizzler® spans 3 days kicking off Friday, April 26th with a full afternoon of practice for Stafford’s weekly divisions.  The weekend continues Saturday, April 27 with qualifying for all divisions including group qualifying for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour as well as feature racing for the Vintage All-Stars, Limited Late Models and Street Stocks.  New for 2019, the Saturday Street Stock feature will be a 30 lap special event as part of the RMSPCO.com Street Stock Triple Crown.  Sizzler® weekend is capped off Sunday, April 28 with the NAPA Auto Parts Pit Party and feature racing for the SK Modifieds®, Late Models, SK Light Modifieds, and finally the NAPA Spring Sizzler® 200 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
