Track Talk Column for Sat. 10/27/18
Track Talk
With a forecast for inclement weather on Saturday, October 27, officials of the Tri-Track Open Modified Series (TTOMS) announced the postponement of the Haunted 100 at Seekonk Speedway until Sunday, October 28. The one-day shift of the event will see the same planned schedule with the pit area opening at 8 am, grandstands at 11 am and racing at 1 pm.
The Haunted happenings include the 100-lap Modified main event, a 150-lapper for the Pro-All-Star Series (PASS) Super Late Models and a 50-lap Late Model race. Champions will be crowned in both TTOMS and PASS Series. While Ron Silk and Matt Hirschman, who are tied in the Series points, will vie for the Modified championship, DJ Shaw and Travis Benjamin will duke it out for the Super Late Model title. Strong fields are expected for all three divisions set for competition on Sunday including 30 plus Modifieds. Practice will take place from 10 am to noon in rotation.
Qualifying has 15-lap heat races for the PASS Super Late Models, 12-lap heat races for the Late Models and 15-lap heats for the Modifieds. Consolation events will be held if necessary. Feature events will be immediately following qualifying action. The schedule is subject to change.
In the TTOMS action, Chase Dowling is only 20 points behind the lead duo of Silk and Hirschman and is very much in contention for the title. It’s a tight point battle inside the top-five; all have a mathematical chance to win. Tommy Barrett of Millis and Woody Pitkat are tied for third with 262 points apiece while Russ Hersey and Matt Galko are each tied for fourth with 254 points apiece. Pitkat, though, won’t be driving at Seekonk as the team he raced with on the TTOMS parked their car for the remainder of the season.
Only 36 points separate the top-seven TTOMS drivers heading into the final race at Seekonk. The cumulative point fund to be distributed by TTOMS is $15,000 with $3,000 being awarded to the series champion.
Over 35 cars are expected to attempt to qualify for the event including; TTOMS event winners Todd Patnode, Tour regulars Matt Swanson, in the legendary Ole Blue #3 owned by Mike Boehler of Freetown, Chris Pasteryak and Calvin Carroll along with hometown favorites Todd Annarummo and Colbey Fournier of Berkley are entered. Other notables include: Anthony Nocella, Richard Savary of Canton, Les Hinckley, Zane Zeiner, Sammy Rameau and Andy Jankowiak.
Richard Savary told us in the mid-week that, “We are ready to go and I’m planning to run up front and stay out of trouble so we can be around at the finish!”
A championship is also on the line for the PASS Northern Super Late Model Tour Sunday afternoon. Ben Rowe from Turner, ME, Travis Benjamin of Belfast, ME, Derek Griffith of Hudson, NH, Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, NH, Nick Sweet from Barre, VT, Reid Lanpher of Manchester, ME, DJ Shaw of Center Conway, NH and Ray Christian, III of Uncasville, CT are among the notables set to do battle in the Pro All Star Series finale.
A regular with the Tri-Track Mods, Derek Ramstrom of Worcester will return to his roots racing the full-fendered family owned #35 in PASS competition. The $1,500 winner’s share will draw a strong field of competitors for the 50 lap Late Model event presented by Propane Plus.
Consolation events will be held if necessary depending on the amount of entries. Feature events will start immediately following all of the qualifying action. The schedule is subject to change.

Steven Midford Wins R.A.D. Auto Machine Limited Late Model Rookie of the Year honors at Stafford Speedway
(Stafford Springs, CT)—For Ellington native Steven Midford, the 2018 Limited Late Model season at Stafford Speedway marked a return to racing after a 4-year layoff. Midford came into the Limited Late Model division with virtually no experience in a full size car coming from the Wild Thing Kart ranks where he drove Medium Pro and Sr. Champs karts. Midford posted 5 top-5 and 18 top-10 finishes this season with his #23 Kar Kare CarStar Chevrolet and took home the R.A.D. Auto Machine Rookie of the Year honors.
“I was very excited to win Rookie of the Year,” said Midford. “Basically our ultimate goal was to win Rookie of the Year and it was what we came to the track to do so it was a big accomplishment for us. I would say it took about half the season to really come around in these cars and get used to how they handle. It was not as easy as I thought it would be going from where I was in karts to the Limited. Taking a couple years off also didn’t help and I had to knock a little rust off. I think we came up to speed pretty quickly but we just didn’t get to where we wanted to be. We started to figure things out about halfway through the season and from there we were really able to pick up the pace. I have to thank Kar Kare CarStar, Snap-On Tools, NAPA Auto Parts, Hometown Pizza of Ellington, and my dad Ron Midford, my brother Ronnie Midford, Jr., Jenna from Lincoln Tech, and my wife Emily and my daughters Jordan and Makayla for their support this season.”
The biggest adjustment for Midford to make after not racing for four years was the transition from a 450 pound Sr. Champ kart to a full-size 3,100 pound Limited Late Model machine and trying to figure out what the car needed to be fast. Midford says that things started to pick up around halfway through the season and it was the final Friday night race on Sept. 14 that Midford says was his best race of the season where he finished third.
“The jump from the karts to a full sized car was a big jump and a lack of knowledge about the setup of the car was the biggest hurdle for us,” said Midford. “Once we started to figure out how to get the car set up towards the end of the season, the car really came around. It was definitely a big jump for us. The last Friday night of the season was the highlight of the year for us. We couldn’t make it to the Fall Final so that was our last race of the year and we finally made it to the center of the infield and were able to get interviewed by finishing on the podium so that was the highlight of our season. We had talked to some people throughout the season about the setup and for that last race we had a new setup in the car with new shocks and springs, and the car really came alive. I wish we could have had the car like that for the whole season.”
While the 2018 season was a success for Midford and the #23 team, they were missing one thing. A trip to NAPA Victory Lane.
“I think my expectations were a little higher because the goal of every driver is to win a race and we didn’t get a win, so that was a little disheartening,” said Midford. “Overall we had a couple of podium finishes and we ran pretty consistently all year long so I’d say we did pretty well for our first year. The season was a success and we did what we could, but we did come up a little short not getting a win.”
In addition to Midford enjoying a successful rookie season, he also got a lesson in the comradery of the Limited Late Model division.
“The Limited Late Model division is a great division with a great bunch of girls and guys to race with and everyone races clean,” said Midford. “I remember one night in the first practice the throttle hung up and the car was destroyed, we took off the entire front end. Everyone from the division was over at the car helping us and giving us parts to get back on the track for the race. We got the car fixed but the only problem was just as we were pulling out on the track the fuel pump broke on the motor and we were done for the night. But it’s a great group of people in that division.”
Midford will officially be crowned as the 2018 R.A.D. Auto Machine Limited Late Model Rookie of the Year at the 49th Annual Stafford Motor Speedway Champions Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 16 at Maneeley’s in South Windsor.
Tickets to the 49th Annual Stafford Motor Speedway Champions Awards Ceremony are $50 per person and can be ordered by calling the Stafford Motor Speedway track office at (860) 684-2783, or by paying for tickets online atwww.staffordspeedway.com.

Bonsignore defending Indoor Auto Racing Series title, goes for a repeat win at Allentown, PA
NEWS FROM LEN SAMMONS PRODUCTIONS
2018-2019 INDOOR AUTO RACING CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FUELED BY VP RACING FUELS
Event Promoter: Len Sammons
Source: Ernie Saxton Communications
ALLENTOWN, PA October 25, 2018 . . . Justin Bonsignore enjoyed a career 2018 season winning the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the Indoor Auto Racing Series Fueled By VP Race Fuels Three Quarter (TQ) Midget championships. The 30 year old driver from Holtsville, N.Y. is hoping to begin his 2019 season as he did this year with a victory inside Allentown, Pa.’s PPL Center on Friday and Saturday, January 4th and 5th.
Bonsignore would fail to win the other four Indoor TQ Midget events in the winter of 2018, but his consistency helped him clinch his first series championships.
When the outdoor season began in March, Bonsignore was already in mid-season form. He scored his first NASCAR Modified win of the season at the Thompson Icebreaker and would sweep all four events at the track, including the season ending World Series. The Long Island, N.Y. native also won two events close to home in Riverhead, N.Y. and solo races in Seekonk, Mass. and Bristol, Tenn. Winning eight of sixteen tour races earned him first NASCAR title.
Bonsignore’s TQ Midget, which like his Tour Modified is black and green and carries the number 51, is currently being prepared for his return to Allentown. The fourth annual Ironton Telephone races will again be held on the concrete floor inside the beautiful PPL Center in downtown Allentown. The headline TQ Midgets will be competing in a complete show Friday and Saturday night, January 4th and 5th. The Champ Karts will run a complete program as part of Friday’s show with the Slingshots joining Saturday’s event.
Three-time Indoor Auto Racing Series champion and former Allentown winner Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, N.Y. hopes to knock Bonsignore off his perch this winter. But first, Rudolph is chasing his own Modified championship on dirt. Currently ranked second on the Super DIRTcar big-block Modified series, Rudolph is seeking top finishes in the final two events of that series at the Dirt Track in Charlotte, N.C. on November 2nd and 3rd. Rudolph, like Bonsignore, hopes to end his outdoor season with a Modified series championship.
Rudolph will then go head-to-head against Bonsignore in Allentown in a clash between the dirt and asphalt super stars.
The Indoor series will then move inside historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. for a winner’s trophy Bonsignore has on his bucket list. The NAPA Know How Weekend on Friday and Saturday, January 25-26, 2019 includes the 17th annual running of the Gambler’s Classic. Ryan Flores, of Cornelius, N.C., the 2017 series champion won the 2018 Gambler’s Classic for TQ Midgets and Bonsignore hopes the tradition continues.
The Indoor Auto Racing Series comes to an end with a first stop at the New York State Fairgrounds Exposition Center in Syracuse, NY on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. The Syracuse program will include two complete programs with qualifying and feature events for the TQ Midgets, Slingshots and Champ Karts on both nights to decide the series championship for all three divisions.
Tickets for the Allentown races are available on-line through a link at the series web-site, indoorautoracing.com, by calling 610-347-TIXX, or stopping at the PPL Center box office at 7th & Hamilton Street in Allentown.
Tickets for Atlantic City are available at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, online at www.ticketmaster.com.
Select tickets for Allentown and Atlantic City are available at the Area Auto Racing News/Len Sammons office at 609-888-3618 for tickets Monday through Friday from 9 to 4:30. Purchase your tickets together and pay only one shipping charge!
Advance tickets for the Syracuse event will be available in the coming weeks.
The three race Indoor Auto Racing Series season is preceded by the second annual East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals being held at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, NJ.
The event featuring the 600cc wingless Micro Sprints will again with racing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night December 13th – 15th. Racing will start at 7 PM on Thursday and Friday, 5 PM on Saturday.
Information, including ticket and hotel links, is available at indoorautoracing.com or by calling the series office during regular workings at 609-888-3618.
