Hometown heroes, fireworks and lots on the line for PASS racers at Oxford and Spud
NAPLES, ME (June 28) – An important stretch of races will be coming up over the next few days for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Models. Following a night of fireworks and local Super Late Model action on Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway, an epic opportunity looms for PASS racers the following day at Oxford. The PASS Open 100 will feature non-PASS North winners competing for a chance to race their way in to the 45th Annual Oxford 250. And if that was not enough, an international cast of drivers will have another opportunity to get locked into the Oxford 250 or PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond Raceway through the $5,000 to win, Firecracker 200 on Tuesday night at Spud Speedway.
PASS will make only it’s second stop ever at Spud Speedway on Tuesday night for the Aroostook Savings & Loan Firecracker 200 as hometown favorite and defending ARCA Racing Series champion, Austin Theriault, returns for this “Roads To Oxford & Richmond” qualifier event. In addition to racing for $5,000 to win in one of the biggest events to ever hit Spud, five more drivers will get a guaranteed starting spot to either the Oxford 250 in August or the PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond in October. In addition to Theriault, 2010 Spud winner, Johnny Clark, will be in action, along with Ben Rowe, DJ Shaw, Cassius Clark, Travis Benjamin, Derek Griffith, and a host of strong contenders for Canada.
Everything actually begins on Saturday night with local Super Late Models and fireworks at Oxford Plains Speedway. Then, on late Sunday afternoon, The Open 100 will feature PASS non-winners racing for a chance to win the Oxford 250. The top three finishers in Sunday’s “Open” will get locked into the 45th Annual Oxford 250. In 2016, Wayne Helliwell, Jr. parlayed a win in the “Open” to a guaranteed starting spot in the 250, before going on to take over $25,000 for winning the biggest race of his career. Oxford regulars Scott McDaniel, Scott Robbins, Tim and TJ Brackett, along with Gabe Brown, Lonnie Sommerville, and Ray Christian, III, have all entered for their shot at making the biggest short track race of the year.
All the action gets under way this weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday with local action beginning at 7 PM featuring the Super Late Models, Street Stocks, Bandits, Figure 8’s and the Oxford Acceleration Series, plus fireworks. On Sunday, grandstands open at 4 PM with racing at 6 PM for the PASS North Super Late Models Open 100, PASS Modifieds, and Colossal Carnage 100 4/6 Cylinder Enduro.
On Tuesday afternoon at Spud Speedway, gates open at 2 PM, followed by practice at 4 PM, with racing starting at 7 PM, featuring the Aroostook Savings & Loan Firecracker 200, Street Stocks, Enduros, and fireworks.
PASS Super Late Model entry forms for Spud Speedway, Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Orange County Speedway, and Oxford Plains Speedway, along with the 45th Annual Oxford 250 and PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond Raceway, can be found at ProAllStarsSeries.com.
The Pro All Stars Series is recognized as North America’s premier sanctioning body for asphalt Super Late Models and boasts such marquee events as the legendary Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway, PASS South’s Easter Bunny 150 at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway, and the inaugural PASS Commonwealth Classic at Richmond Raceway.

Wheelers Automotive Qualifying Race Bonus Returning to Stafford’s NAPA SK 5K
(Stafford Springs, CT)—For the 4th consecutive season John Rufrano and Wheelers Auto Service of Hamden, CT has posted a bonus for the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K qualifying race winners. For a total of $2,000, the Wheelers Automotive qualifying race bonus will be paid to the top-3 finishers in each SK Modified® qualifying race; $250 for first, $150 for second, and $100 for 3rd. The additional $2,000 bonus boost the total posted awards to $34,425.
“The NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K has become a highlight event of the summer for the SK Modified® teams,” explained John Rufrano, owner of Wheelers Auto Service. “We enjoy posting some extra money for the heat races to raise the competition. Every SK Modified® team wants to win the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K, as always it will be a great show.”
Rufrano, whose son Marcello Rufrano competes in Stafford’s SK Light Modified division, is also the car owner to SK Modified® point leader Keith Rocco. Rocco, the 2017 Stafford Speedway SK Modified® track champion, started the season on a hot streak winning the first 3 races of the season. Rocco, a driver who seems to have won it all, over the course of his career, has yet to take home a NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K trophy. Rufrano agrees that this is one of those events every team wants to win.
“Keith is the type of driver that wants to win every week, but the NAPA SK 5K is an event he really wants to be in victory lane for” continued Rufrano. “It’s a big race for all these SK Modified® teams. 100 laps and $5,000 to win will get any driver to drive a little harder. Thanks to Stafford Speedway and NAPA Auto Parts for making this event possible, we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Eric Berndt looking to recapture extra distance magic in NAPA SK 5K
(Stafford Springs, CT)—When the NAPA Auto Parts SK 5K takes the green flag this Friday, June 29 at Stafford Speedway, Eric Berndt will be looking to put his extra distance skills to good use. Berndt, the driver of the #66 Cos’ Central Auto / North End Auto Parts SK Modified®, is a 2-time SK Modified® 100 winner at Stafford and he has 4 extra distance wins in his career in the SK Modified® division at Waterford. Having not won an extra distance race since his 2003 SK Modified® 100 triumph, Berndt is hoping that he can recapture the extra distance magic from earlier in his career.
“We sure hope so,” said Berndt of recapturing his early career extra distance form. “We’re going to see if we can break the trend we’ve had the last couple of years. The car has been fast for most of the year, we’ve just have some unfortunate circumstances. We’d love to win this race, no doubt, but if we can come away with a podium finish, I won’t say it would be as good as a win but we have to get some momentum going our way again and we’d really love to win this race. A top-3 finish would be a big bonus for sure and it would definitely be a big momentum shifter. Hopefully we can finish out the second half of the season strong.”
The 2018 season started off strong for Berndt and the #66 team with 3 podium efforts in the first 6 races. But since a second place finish on June 1st, Berndt hasn’t finished inside the top-10. Berndt has fallen from 8th in the SK Modified® standings, 86 points behind, to 10th in the standings entering the NAPA SK 5K, 146 points behind the leader. Despite the recent run of misfortune, Berndt is confident that a good run in the NAPA SK 5K can get his season back on the right track.
“We found a couple of things and last week we had a motor issue, so it’s been things that have been out of our control,” said Berndt. “We’re hoping we have all the bad stuff dialed out of our system and we can break out in the SK 5K. Even though we had the motor issue last Friday night, we turned the fastest lap of the race and I think that was the best car that we’ve had all season long. If we can keep that going and not have the car break, I think we can be in pretty good shape.”
Berndt’s career record in extra distance races gives him not only the know how to win those races, but it leaves him feeling confident about his chances going into an extra distance event like the NAPA SK 5K.
“It definitely helps having a good track record in longer distance races,” said Berndt. “It gives you a little extra confidence knowing that you can get there as long as you don’t get caught up in anything. It’s two and a half features in one, so patience is going to be a key. To win this race, we’ll need a little bit of tire conservation and to have a little lady luck on our side with choosing the right lanes, and you’re going to need a strong piece. I think we have the car capable of winning the race, we just have to line up all our dots.”
Along with a momentum boosting win, Berndt is looking to take home the winner’s share of $5,000 from the over $27,000 NAPA SK 5K purse, which when combined with contingency bonuses, could swell to over $10,000. Berndt is one of 22 drivers entered into the Dunleavy’s Gambler’s Challenge, which has each SK Modified® driver post $100 with Doug Dunleavy matching up to $2500. With 22 drivers currently entered in the Dunleavy’s Gambler’s Challenge, the bonus is up to $4,400. The Gambler’s Bonus will be distributed to either the winner, evenly across the top 5, top 10, or 11th through 20th. The winner will draw from a hat in victory lane to see how the bonus will be distributed.
“It’s great,” said Berndt. “It’s something to really look forward to every year. When you get where the money is really good, it’s a bonus for all the teams and big paying races are always good for short track racing. We can’t really complain, Stafford has upped the purses this year and they continue to grow and Stafford is the best paying track around. Also, Doug Dunleavy has been a great supporter of local short track racing so he deserves a big shout out for keeping the Gambler’s Challenge going.”

Double the Tiger action on tap at packed CCV Night at T Road

Barre, VT – Barre’s Thunder Road will be full speed ahead this Thursday, June 28 at Community College of Vermont Night. A pit area full of race cars is expected for a special 6:30 pm post time with all four of the track’s exciting classes ready to give lessons to their competition.
The Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers are ready to double up on Thursday with two features scheduled. They open the program with their Casella Waste Systems main event that was postponed following qualifying two weeks ago. A second feature will follow later in the evening as part of the CCV program.
With the Tiger season at the quarter-pole, it’s currently a two-man dance for the top spot. Morrisville’s Dwayne Lanphear continues to lead the way as the veteran guns for his second track championship. Craftsbury’s Joel Hodgdon has kept things close by scoring top-5 finishes at every event.
But two features in one night means there will be two chances for other top racers to close the gap. Veterans Trevor Lyman of Hinesburg, Joe Steffen of Grand Isle, and Derrick Calkins of Milton would all make big gains with a hot CCV night. Sophomores Jason Pelkey of Barre and Tyler Austin of E. Calais have been strong to start the year and will try to stay on point.
Lanphear’s son Brandon has entered the mix with first- and third-place finishes at the last two events. Last week’s winner Kyle Streeter of Waitsfield has an excellent chance to go back-to-back as he will start outside pole in the Casella make-up feature. Just 14 points separate third-place Pelkey from ninth-place Mike Billado, meaning some serious shuffling is sure to happen Thursday.
A full card of thrilling racing for the Maplewood/Irving Late Models, Allen Lumber Street Stocks, and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors is also on the agenda. South Burlington’s Trampas Demers and Barre’s Jason Corliss both had big nights last week, scoring victories in the Late Model double features. The duo now sit 1-2 in the standings as each one chases their first “King of the Road” title.
Barre’s Cody Blake was caught up in a crash in the second feature but retained the third spot overall. Fifteen-year-old Evan Hallstrom of Northfield has sailed to fourth in the Late Model ranks after a runner-up in last week’s nightcap. Milton’s Scott Dragon sits one point behind Hallstrom and looks like a threat to challenge for his second track championship.
Essex Jct.’s Matthew Smith continues to rule the Street Stock division with two wins and two runner-up finishes already this year. Barre’s Jeffrey Martin now stands as Smith’s closest challenger after taking the win in the Twin State Street Stock Series opener. Youngsters Logan Powers and Stephen Martin sit third and fourth followed by Tim Hunt. Defending champion Jamie Davis took a tumble in the standings after an opening-lap wreck on Thursday and is looking for a return to form.
The Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors will be hot to trot on Thursday as James Dopp, Frank Putney, Jayme Lee and the rest of the class hit the track for their first feature in a month. The 3rd Annual Vermont Brewer’s Cup rounds out the program as the state’s top craft brewers battle it out to be the “Fastest Brewer in Vermont”.
The first green flag of Community College of Vermont Night will fly at 6:30pm this Thursday, June 28. Admission is just $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids). The front gates will open at 4:45pm.
