NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Returns To “Concrete Palace”
We’re past Memorial Day weekend, which means the unofficial start of the summer swing for racing is set to get underway. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East runs its sixth of 14 race events on the 2018 championship schedule this weekend at the three-quarter mile Memphis International Raceway Saturday evening. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour heads to Massachusetts to the third-mile Seekonk Speedway Saturday night.
NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR at SEEKONK
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
After getting the month of May off, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is back in action with the tour’s third consecutive trip to “The Cement Palace” and ninth overall.
While the focus will be on the championship chase, Matt Hirschman is looking to steal the spotlight. TheNorthampton, Pennsylvania, driver, won the pole and led 62 laps last year before finishing fourth. While he’s still looking for his first tour win since 2008, he started the year strong by winning the tour-type Modified title at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway and finishing third in the tour opener at South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Four-time defending tour champion Doug Coby is looking to get his season on track. He’s seventh in points and the defending race winner, and showed last year not to count him out too early. Coby has three top fives in four starts at Seekonk.
Justin Bonsignore holds a one-point lead on Chase Dowling, and has a pair of top 10s in two events.

NASCAR K&N PRO SERIES EAST at MEMPHIS
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Harrison Burton picked up the checkered flag in the series’ inaugural run at the historic Tennessee track, and this year’s event will be 25 laps longer.
Both Chase Cabre (second) and Ronnie Bassett Jr. (fourth) recorded top fives among returning drivers. Cabre is coming off a bittersweet run at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway, where he was within a lap of scoring his first series victory.
Instead, it was newly-minted NASCAR Next driver Anthony Alfredo who ended DGR-Crosley’s four-race stranglehold on Victory Lane. Tyler Ankrum has used remarkable consistency (five top fives in five races, including three top threes) to build an 11-point lead on teammate Tyler Dippel. Bassett sits in third, another 16 points back, ready to pounce if any of the leaders run into trouble.
This is the final in a five-race swing through Tennessee and Virginia for the series, which next heads north to New Jersey before a pair of New England dates.

ACT heads to Speedway 51 with tight championship battle early
Corey Mason (#1NH) has been one of the early frontrunners during the 2018 ACT season, while Dylan Payea (#7NH) and Christopher Pelkey (#41VT) sit 1-2 in the Rookie of the Year battle. (Alan Ward photo)
Waterbury, VT – After a weekend off to catch its breath, the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) gets right back to action this Saturday, June 2 at Groveton, NH’s Speedway 51 powered by the Autosaver Group. The Caron Fabrication 151 is the first of two visits to the ¼-mile speed plant in 2018, meaning that “Grovetona” will play a big role in the ACT championship battle.
With three events in the books, a trio of the top Late Model drivers in the Northeast are closely bunched together atop the standings. Defending ACT Champion Scott Payea of Milton, VT sits at the head of the pack after a 5th-place finish at Oxford Plains Speedway on May 20. While that would be considered a great day for many drivers, in Payea’s case, it allowed his two closest competitors to gain some ground in the title hunt.
Rowley, MA’s Eddie MacDonald was the victor at Oxford. Not only did the win add $5,000 to the bank account of the Roland LaChance Jr.-led team, but it also helped MacDonald pull within seven points of Payea in the standings. Williamstown, VT’s Jimmy Hebert followed MacDonald across the line and is nipping at his heels in the points as well. Hebert sits third overall, 20 points back of Payea and 13 behind MacDonald.
“The ACT Late Model Tour has a lot of great drivers, and they’re showing it early,” ACT co-owner Cris Michaud said. “We’ve had a different winner at every race, and when a lot of drivers are running well, it’s hard to for them to separate from each other. We think this is the precursor to a great season-long battle.”
Another pack of drivers sits within striking distance of the leaders, and any of them could get into the title hunt as well with the right breaks. Nottingham, NH’s Miles Chipman is off to the best start of his ACT career and sits fourth in the standings. Groveton, NH’s Corey Mason is just behind him in fifth as the Tour heads to the track where he was the 2017 North Country Ford Late Model Champion.
Matt White and Rich Dubeau are sixth and seventh, respectively, as each has a pair of early top-10 finishes to their name. Chip Grenier has been recovering nicely from a rough season opener and now resides eighth overall.
A large ACT rookie class is staging their own duel as well. Milton, VT’s Dylan Payea, the cousin of Scott Payea, has come out of the gate strong for the Rookie of the Year crown. But Christopher Pelkey, T.J. Moreshead, and Reilly Lanphear are among the drivers in position to capitalize should Payea stumble.
Both the championship and Rookie of the Year chases will go their next round on the tight Groveton high banks this Saturday, June 2 with a 6:00pm post time. Speedway 51’s Perras Ace Hardware Tiger Sportsmen, Caron Fabrication Street Stocks, and Claudette & Dean’s Place Daredevils plus the Wicked Good Vintage Racing Association join the ACT Late Model Tour. The pit gates open at 12:00pm and the front gates open at 1:00pm. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors/military members, $10 for teens ages 12-16, and free for kids ages 11 and under.

Jeff Gallup looking for redemption in Stafford Speedway’s Twisted Tea Open Modified 80
(Stafford Springs, CT)—When the Twisted Tea Open Modified 80 takes the green flag on Friday, June 8 at Stafford Speedway, one driver who will be looking for redemption at the Connecticut half-mile facility is Jeff Gallup. The Monson, MA native had a strong showing in the VMRS 80 on May 18 at Stafford, starting seventh and leading 30 of the first 42 laps behind the wheel of his #4 C+G before fading back to 10th place at the checkered flag.
“I’m very much looking forward to getting back to Stafford,” said Gallup. “I really felt like we could have won [the VMRS 80] but I used my stuff up and we didn’t get the result we wanted. I was pretty bummed out after the race and I didn’t really want to talk to anyone. We’ll be looking for a little redemption in the Open 80.”
While Gallup may have overused his car in the VMRS 80, the rules for the Twisted Tea Open 80 allow teams the ability to change two tires during the 80-lap race where VMRS rules only allow teams to swap tires from front to back or vice versa and not add any new rubber during the race. With how good his car ran in the VMRS 80 and with the ability to change tires, Gallup feels confident about his chances of being among the contenders to win the Twisted Tea Open 80.
“I think we’ll be among the contenders,” said Gallup. “I don’t think there were too many cars that could run with us so hopefully we can get out front and I can set my own pace again except this time keep the car up front for the whole race. The big thing with this race is we know we’ll have some tires left for the end to be able to run with guys like Rowan Pennink and Woody Pitkat and stay up front. With the 2 change tires, you can pit around halfway or whenever and put 2 tires on the car and still run the same pace you were running at the start of the race. I think that’s going to make for a faster pace throughout the race. We need to have the car right and be in the right place at the end of the race and have enough car left to be able to go for the win.”
Should Gallup go on to win the Twisted Tea Open 80, he would join his father Richie on the list of modified feature winners at Stafford. Richie Gallup won a total of 7 SK Modified® feature events from 1984-1992 and to join his father on the winners list at Stafford would mean the world to Gallup.
“A win would mean a lot, especially at Stafford,” said Gallup. “The track is only 20 minutes from our shop and I grew up watching my Dad win a lot of SK races there and he was close to a couple of championships, so a Tour type win would really mean a lot to me.”
Gallup will have his work cut out for him if he is to win the Twisted Tea Open 80. The entry list is littered with Stafford regulars like Chase Dowling, Mike Christopher, Jr., Rowan Pennink, Joey Cipriano, Andrew Molleur, Keith Rocco, Marcello Rufrano, and Matt Galko, former weekly drivers like Mike Holdridge, Jeff Malave, and Dave Etheridge, former SK Modified® champions Frank Ruocco and Woody Pitkat, and Whelen Modified Tour veteran Eric Goodale.
Teams can register for the Twisted Tea Open Modified 80 online or by calling the track office at (860)-684-2783. Rules for the two Open Modified 80 shows can be found in the TEAMS section ofwww.staffordspeedway.com.
Stafford’s five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions will join the Open Modifieds in feature action. Tickets for this event are priced at $30.00 for adult general admission tickets, $5.00 for children ages 6-14, and children ages 5 and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Reserved seat tickets are $32.00 for all ages. All ticket prices include 10% CT Admission Tax. Stafford Motor Speedway offers plenty of free parking along with overnight parking available for self-contained Recreational Vehicles.
