Granite State Pro Stocks to finish 2016 at New London-Waterford Speedbowl

The GSPSS has added two additional stops in 2016 at Wiscasset Speedway in ME and Riverhead Raceway on Long Island.

The GSPSS will put a wrap on the 2016 racing season this Sunday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

After an enduring season of racing across the New England region, the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) is set to crown the 2016 champion this Saturday, Oct. 22., at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

The 3/8 mile Shoreline oval will play host to the Super Late Model Series in a 75 lap main event that will decide a championship battle that currently has two veterans at the top.

Belchertown, Mass. driver Barry Gray holds a 26 point advantage over Conway, N.H. native D.J. Shaw, who was also recently crowned the PASS champion for 2016. Gray has little experience at the Speedbowl, but is hoping to seal the deal in his No. 29. Though he is not a GSPSS champion, Gray has won championships in racing before.

“The past championship experience helps, but I’ve really only run Waterford a few times,” Gray said. “I can’t tell you how many times D.J. has run there but I know everywhere they go they are fast. My hat goes off to them. I just have to have some patience, but I’ve won a race for a long time every year and I haven’t won yet this year. I’m going there to win.”

On the other side, Shaw knows he will have to do everything he can and hope that Gray stumbles if he is going to win the title. But, he has the confidence in his team. They missed two races on the 2016 campaign and they are still in the fight.

“We need to stay out of trouble, last year we didn’t finish because we had a mechanical issue,” Shaw said. “Whether it be getting caught up in someone else’s mess or some bad luck, we need to finish and we need to finish towards the front to have a chance.”

The entry list for the event include multiple outsiders who will hope to capture the trophy. Brandon Turbush of Manorville, N.Y. has entered, along with names like defending race winner Derek Ramstrom, Corey Bubar, Jeff Pearl and former multiple time Seekonk Speedway Super Late Model champion David Darling.

Series regulars Cory Casagrande, Mike Parks, Mike Mitchell and reigning series champion going into the weekend Derek Griffith have also entered.

As an added bonus for drivers, The Racing Guys — Dick Williams and the supporters of the Tri Track Open Modified Series — have put up some bonus money for the event. The winner will receive an extra $125, while second place will pocket an extra $100.

Third place will also collect an added $75. There will also be two random selections of drivers from positions four through 24. Each of the two drivers will receive $75.

The GSPSS wishes to thank The Racing Guys for coming on board for the second straight season and providing some extra cash for drivers to chase.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series will have just a one day show on Saturday. Teams may not practice as part of the Friday afternoon practice session.

Saturday, grandstand gates open at 12 p.m., just in time for the only GSPSS practice of the weekend from 12-12:45 p.m. Heat racing begins at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the feature racing.

All grandstand tickets are $40 and will be accepted both for Saturday’s racing and Sunday’s Tri Track Open Modified Series show.

Testing the new 2016 VW Beetle 1.8T Dune

MOTOR DRIVING

By Ed Dornig

 2016 VW Beetle 1.8T Dune

This 2016 Beetle 1.8T Dune caught my eye primarily because of its color. VW labeled it Sandstorm Yellow Metallic. Late in the 1990’s VW decided to redesign and reintroduce the Beetle making an attempt to boost sales in the American market. Although the shape of the Beetle remains similar, it was lacking a shapely balance. It seemed to appear a little ‘high’ in the middle of the roof. About three years ago another styling adjustment was made that corrected the shape making it look more like ‘the old Bug’. VW has also provided an improved 1.8L TSI double overhead cam 16V Turbo 4-cylinder direct injection engine. My transmission was a 6 speed automatic. This transmission had a feature on the control allowing the driver to manually control shift points. It has a wider track and a raised suspension allowing better handling and comfort. The tires were Continentals 235/45 X 18. This car in many ways is a sports car.

When entering this vehicle the door opens wide allowing the driver easy access into the sport seat. The seat is firm preventing you from sliding around if you start thinking that you are Mario Andretti. These sport seats have many adjustments which allow the driver to seek the correct position needed for the next trip. The driver can also adjust the steering wheel allowing the driver to obtain the proper grip of the leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel. The driver is now ready to ‘use a key‘ to start the engine and enter the roadway.

Getting familiar with the basic controls such as the operation of heat, a/c, radio, cruise control and other features is easy. The radio, lights and heater controls have knobs. No hidden tricks. Cruise control and a few other functions are unique but not difficult to understand. A new driver of this VW will only have to get familiar with the positions of switches and buttons. It has been relatively easy for me considering I’ve never been a geek when it comes to new features on new cars. One thing this car does not have is the dreaded center Console ‘knob’ that is found on some new vehicles.

Once on the road the car accelerated without any hesitation. I did various movements allowing myself to get familiar with the vehicle. I drove 65 MPH and noticed the cabin noise was low considering the tires had just over 11,000 miles of use. The VW Beetle Dune is equipped with a large rear spoiler. I was not able to obtain the down force figures however, at high speed the car was firm, very stable and planted on the road. Exiting the highway on a curved ramp, I maintained speed making radical S turns and noticed that the car remained planted with no lean going thru all the turns. Approaching the stop line I did not experience any brake fade coming to a stop. My adjustment to the car was quick and easy. It was very predictable.

When driving I like to ‘feel’ the cars instead of just aiming it down the road. This car will provide a lot of fun moving from points A to B. The driving I did was combined with both around town and Interstate highways. I was in ‘testing’ mode many times using the engine to experience it’s power as well as driving on back roads feeling just how the handling was. The window sticker indicated fuel figures by EPA/DOT MPG as 25 city, 28 combined and 34 highway. The MPG I experienced driving this car was surprisingly. I averaged my varied driving and came up with 34.5 MPG. I believe that driving on a long trip  it would be much higher. The sticker price for this car was just over $25,000.

I realize that we’re near the end of the 2016 model season however, this car deserves a second look and is ideal for a driver that enjoys comfort and a fun driving experience. Take a look at it on line, ‘VW Beetle Dune’ and hit return. It would also be interesting to see if the ‘race car driver in the family’ could head to a local car club competition event and see if they could return home with a trophy. I’ll bet that they would.

The Tri Track Open Modified Series (TTOM) is set to conclude the 2016 season on Sunday Oct. 23 at New London-Waterford Speedbowl. Instead of the normal heat racing followed by the B-Main and feature, this event will take on a different format. The design of the race will be the exact same as last year’s Bemer’s Big Show at the Speedbowl, with twin 35 lap races starting the afternoon.

The two 35 lap races will each pay $3,000 to winner and the top 11 finishers in each race will advance into the 65 lap feature event that will pay $5,000 to win later in the afternoon. There will also be a 25 lap B-Main race, that pays $1,000 to win and the top four finishers will advance into the 65 lapper.

Coming into the event, 45 cars are currently pre-entered in hopes of taking down the big check. NASCAR XFINITY Series regular Ryan Preece will wheel the TS Haulers No. 6 on Sunday and he is joined by many of his fellow NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competitors.

Justin Bonsignore is entered in the SPAFCO Chassis No. 21 for the Barry family, while Rowan Pennink is set to wheel Gary Casella’s No. 25. Names like Anthony Nocella, Todd Annarummo, Troy Talman and Waterford SK Modified regulars Ted Christopher and Keith Rocco have also filed an entry. Dick Houlihan of Bridewater, Rob Summers, Chris Pasteryak, Dylan Kopec and others are also scheduled to compete.

The 2016 Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists championship chase will also be decided on Sunday. Coming into the race, Matt “Money” Hirschman, Ron Silk, Woody Pitkat, Les Hinckley and Richard Savary of Canton are the only drivers who are eligible to leave the track with the title crown. The Tri Track Series does drop the lowest finish for each driver during the 2016 season, so any of these drivers could come home with the title when the 65 lap main event is complete.

Sunday’s 35 lap races will each pay $14,380, while the 25 lap B-Main will pay $8,000. The 65 lap main event will pay a purse of $19,800. Each and every one of the races will pay at least $300 to start, but if a driver can win both their 35 lapper and 65 lapper they will collect $8,000. The total payout including all the races on Sunday will be $57,400.

TTOMS wishes to thank all sponsors, teams, media, fans and competitors for their hard work and dedication to the racing for the 2016 season. At this point, the future of the series is unknown.

Though the Bemer’s Big Show weekend at Waterford is a two day event, the Tri Track Open Modified Series will only be a part of the Sunday portion. Twin 35 lap feature races worth $3,000 to win — top 11 advance. One B-Main 25 lap race, top four advance to 65 lap race. One 65 lap main event paying $5,000 to the winner.   Practice is from 12-1 p.m. Heat racing starts at 2 p.m.  Feature racing will follow

Unfortunately, New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway feature event action fell victim to wet weather earlier this month and was postponed to tomorrow Sunday, October 23. A dozen feature events remain to be run to close out the 2016 season at the fast 3/8th’s mile speed plant. With result of New England race fans having to make a choice for their weekend racing

With the re-schedule to Sunday, October 23rd engines staring at noon with some practice rounds then going right into features, the Valenti Modified Racing Series will open up the feature event action with the first of their two 50-lap feature events, with the Northeast Classic Lites, the second   50-lapper for the Pro Stocks/Super Late Models, the 6-cylinder Ironman main, and several others to follow.

The second 50-lapper for the VMRS will take to the high banks next, with the Roadrunners, Super-Modifieds, Late Models, Late Model Sportsmen/Super Streets, NEMST Mini Stocks, open comp Dwarf Cars, Hobby/Strictly Stocks, and Outlaw Mini Stocks rounding out the program. (end)

New NBCSN show offers viewers insider access to professional motorsport Motorclub debuts on NBCSN October 20

An exciting new documentary series launching this fall offers viewers unprecedented access to the high stakes world of professional auto racing. Motorclub focuses on the personal stories and experiences of leading action motorsport stars including multi-series champion and stunt driver Tanner Foust, action sport superstar and Nitro Circus founder Travis Pastrana, motocross innovator and truck racer Brian Deegan, U.S. Formula One star turned rallycross champ Scott Speed, skateboarding and rallycross pro Bucky Lasek, FMX rider Jackson Strong, and legendary drifter Ken Gushi.
The show invites viewers behind the scenes to share in the lives of these compelling personalities both on and off the racetrack. “These are the innovators and the builders, the stars who have come through the grassroots ranks to shape the future of action motorsport,” said co-creator and series director Matt Fife. “This is a rare moment in racing where we can create a show that’s part of the evolution of motorsport.”
Shot in a cinematic, documentary style, Motorclub brings viewers inside a motorsport community with diverse roots across the spectrum of racing, action sport, fashion, design and social media. The show covers it all, from epic race wins to weekends cutting loose with friends, sharing the real experiences of drivers and the cadre of behind-the- scenes personalities that support them in their professional and personal lives.
“All of the personalities on Motorclub can be a powerful inspiration to people who want to know what it takes to become a pro,” said Fred Chang, series co-creator and longtime motorsport agent. “The stories we’re telling prove that there’s no limit to what’s possible when you chase your passion.”
Viewers will follow the close-knit racing community from pre-season through to the final moments of championship competition. Each episode features intersecting storylines from on and off the track and culminates with real racing footage as seen from the exclusive perspective of drivers, crew, family members and friends.
“There’s a human element to the motorsport experience that isn’t there when you watch racing coverage on TV,” said Chang. “With Motorclub, we are uniquely positioned to tell the whole story.”
The show joins the NBC Sports Network’s schedule this fall, premiering alongside Nitro Circus, one of its most popular action sports programs. NBC and NBCSN are the U.S. television home of motorsports, offering 1,800 hours of unparalleled motorsports content across its television and digital platforms. Coverage includes broadcasts of major racing series, complemented by original motorsports programming, like Motorclub.
“As the home of motorsports, we’re pleased to add Motorclub to NBC Sports Group’s programming lineup,” said Jeff Macaulso, Senior Director, Programming, NBC Sports Group. “Motorclub’s all-access documentary style storytelling will offer race fans a behind-the-scenes look at some of their favorite drivers and teams.”
The first episode of Motorclub airs October 20 at 11 p.m. ET.
