February: Historic Poster Exhibit, “Black Leaders” at MPL

Black Leaders 3

From February 2 through February 25, 2016, “Black Leaders,” a collection of labor posters, will be displayed in the Wotiz Gallery of the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.  The posters are from a collection of 6,000 owned by long-time activist Stephen Lewis. This is a tribute to black leaders who rose to leadership positions despite discrimination, repression, and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.  Some were assassinated because of their work on behalf of others. Included in this display will be Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Angela Davis, Patrice Lumumba, Maurice Bishop, Graca Machel, Wangari Maathai, Jesse Jackson, Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, Amilcar Cabral, Carl Hampton, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglas.

Mr. Lewis’s collection has been on exhibit at public libraries in Massachusetts and at two of the State Heritage parks.  He has presented at the annual conference of the National Council on Public History, and on cable television programs.  Email Mr. Stephen Lewis:  lewisposters@gmail.com

This project is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and by Laborers Local 22, Carpenters District Council, and Asbestos Workers Local 6.

For more information about exhibiting your artwork at the library, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, at (617) 698-5757, Ext. 3.

Wed, Jan. 27, “The Martian,” book chat at the MPL

The Martian

Do you love reading unusual books? Milton Library Director Will Adamczyk will host his “Eclectic Book Club with Will” to discuss the book The Martian by Andy Weir on Wednesday, January 27 at 7 PM at the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue.  The event is free and open to the public.  Meet new friends and discover great, new reading!

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The Martian has been made into a new movie starring Matt Damon.
