April 9 – The Art in Bloom Road Show – Milton Library

Flowers!  Flowers!  Flowers!  “The Art in Bloom Road Show” will be presented on Thursday, April 9th at 7 PM in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.   The event will capture the behind-the-scenes preparation for the Museum of Fine Art’s annual “Art in Bloom,” a four-day period in the spring when fifty of the museum’s art objects are interpreted through floral arrangements.   Art in Bloom,” with other coordinated events, proves to be the museum’s busiest week.    MFA Senior Associate Kristen Wainwright will give a slide presentation highlighting the background of Art in Bloom, and MFA Senior Associate  Marmee Taylor will create a floral interpretation of an art object.   This program is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Public Library and we thank them for their support.  Visit the library’s website at www.miltonlibrary.org and click on “Events” for more information, or call Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, at (617) 698-5757.  The library is located at 476 Canton Avenue, Milton.

March 24: Book Discussion of The Boys in the Boat at the MPL

Come join Library Director Will Adamczyk, Tuesday, March 24, at 7pm., the lower level conference room of the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton for a book discussion of The  Boys in the Boat, this year’s Milton Reads’ selection for town wide reading.

No need to be a literary scholar or Olympic athlete to enjoy the book or participate in the book chat.  Downstairs in the Library’s Conference Room.

 

March 23: Free film, The Miracle, at the Milton Library

The film, Miracle, screens on Monday, March 23, promptly at 6:30pm in the Keys Room at the Library. The entire family will enjoy this inspiring film based on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team’s win over the Russian team. Celebrate 35 years of sports history! Rated PG.

March 30: Free film, Unbroken at the Milton Public Library

The film Unbroken, screens on Monday, March 30, promptly at 6:30pm in the Keys Room at the Library.  Directed by Angelina Jolie, the film tells the story of Olympian Louis Zamperini’s quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and his experience as a WWII prisoner of war

The film will be shown downstairs at the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA 02186.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Library and admission is free to all.

 

Rated PG- 13.

 

March 29: Trivia Fest – Olympics, sports, and the book, “The Boys in the Boat”

TriviaFest!  Meet new friends and enjoy a Sunday afternoon on March 29, 4-6pm, at Ester Restaurant, 2261 Dorchester Avenue in Lower Mills.  Bring a team or join one when you arrive.  Quizmaster and Milton Library Director, Will Adamczyk, will serve up factoids and plenty of laughs.  Match wits with friends and foes on The Boys in the Boats related themes. Brush up on local sports and Olympic history, and be prepared to know your boats.  The event is free; light refreshments will be provided with a cash bar.

March 31: Meet 1956 Olympic Rowing Champions

Meet Our Olympic Rowers, Tuesday, March 31, 7pm in the Keys Room at the Library.

William “Beck” Becklean, coxswain for the 1956 Olympic Gold Medal winning crew team will share stories of the determination, perseverance and excitement that comes with winning Gold.  John “Biggy” Biglow, won Gold in the 1984 Olympics and his crew team became the subject of David Halberstam’s book The Amateurs.  John grew up in Seattle with Judy Rantz, the daughter of Joe Rantz, who is the leading character in The Boys in the Boat. John will share his own success story of Gold, and also Judy’s role as the collaborator with the book’s author Daniel James Brown.

As a non-fiction best seller, The Boys in the Boat has been immensely popular and the library has acquired many more copies including e-books. Be sure to stop by the Library and pick up your copy.  For more information about Milton Reads, visit www.miltonlibrary.org.

April 11 – Student Chess-a-Palooza at the Milton Library – Advance reg. required

The fourth annual Chess-a-Palooza returns to the Milton Public Library with International Master David Vigorito serving as tournament director on Saturday April 11, starting at 9:30 a.m.!

The advance signup deadline is March 28 and the competition will be held downstairs in the Keys Community Room at the Milton Public Library 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.

The fun and friendly scholastic chess tournament is open to all Milton school students. Players of all abilities are welcome. The tournament will be limited to the first 50 entrants. Trophies and prizes will be awarded in grades K-2, grades 3 – 4, and grades 5 – 6. Sections may be modified depending on the number of entrants.

The cost is $10 and registration in advance is required. To register, please visit www.miltonlibrary.org and click on Event Calendar. March 25 Mystery novelist Hallie Ephron at the Milton Library

A mysterious drowning in Beverly Hills! Mystery novelist Hallie Ephron shares her newest book, Night Night, Sleep Tight  on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Milton Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton, MA 02186.  The evening is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Library.

The talented Milton author Hallie Ephron will share details about the unsettling story of character Deirdre Unger who drives from San Diego to Beverly Hills to help her screenwriter father put his dilapidated house on the market.  She expects to deal with his usual kvetching and dark moods, but she gets a lot more than expected! She arrives to find her father dead in his too-small swimming pool.  Come listen to this fascinating book talk where copies will be available for purchase and signing.

Milton Reads: The Boys in the Boat

Milton Reads is underway and our town is reading  The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.  Copies are available for borrowing at the first-floor circulation desk at the Milton Public Library.

March 14 -28 – Children’s Book Sale – Milton Library Friends Book Shop

For two weeks, a special sale of gently used books for children of all ages takes place at the Friends of the Milton Public Library Book Shop, lower level, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton starting Saturday, March 14 through March 28.  Board books, picture books, chapter books in fiction and nonfiction, and young adult selections, are sale priced at three for $1.  All children’s books are included in this sale, except for a few higher valued books which are priced as marked.

Shop hours are Tuesdays, 10m-2pm;

Wednesdays 6:30-8:30pm;

Fridays, 10am-12pm;

Saturdays 10am-2pm; Sundays 2-4pm.
