Milton Library: April 8 Author Bob Halloran and Impact Statement

Emmy Award winning Bob Halloran wrote about Debra Davis’s murder from her family’s viewpoint in his new book, Impact Statement:  A Family’s Fight for Justice against Whitey Bulger, Stephen Flemmi, and the FBI.  Hear his talk on Tuesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.  Milton resident Steve Davis, Debra’s brother, will be present.  He was a primary source for the book and will join Bob Halloran for the discussion. The free event, sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Library, is open to the public.

Impact Statement

Bob Halloran also wrote Irish Thunder:  The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward and served as a consultant on Paramount’s Academy Award-winning movie, “The Fighter.”  Mr. Halloran is the sports anchor at WCVB SportsCenter 5, with a distinguished career in sports reporting.  He is the recipient of a New England Emmy Award and two honors from the Associated Press.  He lives in Milton with his family.

Milton Library, April 5: Meet award winning authors

Book lovers!  A first-ever “Coffee with The Authors” will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 10:30 to noon in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton. Meet four award-winning authors and discover interesting books through author readings and insights!  The free event, sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Library, is open to the public.  The following authors will be featured, with refreshments and book signings to follow.

 Try to Remember

TRY TO REMEMBER is about an immigrant girl coming of age as her father is descending into a frightening and confusing mental illness with a larger story of the complexities that define the immigrant experience in the U.S. today.  AUTHOR IRIS GOMEZ has won praise from O, Oprah and Latina magazines. Try to Remember has been on the Boston Globe’s bestseller’s list and won 2010 and 2011 book awards for popular fiction.

JOURNEY FROM SAN ROCCO is a memoir about a post-World War I widow who leaves three of her four children behind in Italy to travel to America to marry a man she barely knows. Years will pass before she is reunited with her children. It’s a true story based on the author’s grandmother.  AUTHOR ROSALIND CUSCHERA won an Honorable Mention at the 2013 New England Book Festival.

THE BRACELET is set in the Middle East where Boston nurse Abby Monroe and New York Times reporter, Nick Sinclair, are entrenched in the middle of a human trafficking ring. AUTHOR ROBERTA GATELY is a nurse, humanitarian aid worker, and writer, and has served in third world war zones ranging from Africa to Afghanistan. She has written on the subject of refugees for the Journal of Emergency Nursing and the BBC World News Online. She also wrote the acclaimed book, Lipstick in Afghanistan.

THE RISING AT ROXBURY CROSSING connects 1919’s Boston’s Irish immigrants and Ireland’s guerrilla war of independence through Willie Dwyer.  Now a policeman, Dwyer is haunted by his past in Ireland, a secret that his nemesis threatens to expose. AUTHOR JAMES REDFEARN said his late father-in-law once asked, “Can you do some research on my father? He was a Boston Police Officer.” The Department record for the patrolman read: “Mulvey, William J., ABANDONED HIS DUTY, September 9, 1919.” It became the basis for his book.  Mr. Redfearn served in law enforcement and criminal investigation. His stories have been published in Harvard University’s Charles River Review and the New England Writers Network.

Milton Library: March 13, free movie, “The Town”

A crime story about love.

The Milton Public Library invites you to attend a special showing of “The Town” on Thursday, March 13th, at 6:30 p.m., in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the library, located at 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.  This free event, sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library, is open to the public.

“The Town,” co-written and directed by Ben Affleck, and adapted from the novel “Prince of Thieves” by Chuck Hogan, is set in Boston and stars Ben Affleck, John Hamm, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively.  2 hours, 31 minutes, 2010.

In this tense and wonderfully cast crime drama, Boston bank robber Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) falls for former hostage Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall).  As the FBI pursues MacRay’s gang of career criminals from Charlestown, MacRay finds himself in conflict between the only family he has ever known, and the woman who sees him as someone other than a ruthless kidnapper.  This heart-pounding drama never rests as MacRay wrestles with his past and decides his future.

Milton Library: March 15 Style – look fine on a dime – Veronica Guerrero Macia

Use what you have to create new style!  Veronica Guerrero Macia, a personal organizer and fashion expert, will present the first of two workshops designed to help you build a more stylish wardrobe.  “Look Fine on a Dime” takes place on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Keys Room, lower level, of the Milton Public Library at 476 Canton Avenue in Milton. Learn how to “rethink’ your current wardrobe, shop with a more discerning eye, and pick up tips on tailoring, editing, and repurposing what you have.

A special fashion gift basket will be offered as a raffle prize. Milton Library: March 16: Plant a better vegetable garden – Master Gardener Betty Sanders

The secret to a great vegetable garden is in the planning, and according to gardening expert Betty Sanders, it’s never too early to start the planning process.  Betty will share her gardening tips at a workshop called Tips for a Better Vegetable Garden, on Sunday, March 16, at 2pm, at the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue.

A Lifetime Master Gardener, Betty is also a nationally accredited flower show judge. She studied gardening at the Arnold Arboretum, the New York Botanical Garden, and the New England Wildflower Society. She has lectured at the New England Flower Show, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and Tower Hill Botanical Garden, as well as at numerous garden clubs, and civic organizations. Her website www.bettyongardening.com, offers a variety of tips for avid gardeners, including a section called Horticultural Hints where she offers a monthly “to do” list of garden chores.
