September Art Exhibit – Equestrian Art Photography at Milton Library

Equestrian, animal, and landscape photography comes to the Milton Public Library beginning September 3.  All month the works of Milton photographer Ruth Baltopoulos will be exhibited in the Wotiz Gallery on the main floor of Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA  02186.  Her website is www.ruthworks.com

Originally from New York Ruth Baltopoulos has been a resident of Milton for 28 years, and her main business is early childhood education.  She grew up on a working dairy farm and rode horses since early childhood. She also operated a small private horse farm for ten years, and has a lifelong interest in photography. Mainly self-taught, she took a certification course with the NY Institute for Photography.  She is a member of the Norfolk Hunt Club out of Medfield, MA, and has been riding with them and photographing the hunt for around 15 years.  Her main focus is equine sporting photography, animals and landscapes.  Ms. Baltopoulos has two adult daughters.  Like their mother, they own horses and have been riding sine they were young. Enjoy this photographic display starting September 3.

August 26: A Scandal in Bohemia, free film, Milton Library

Scandal in Bohemia

Sherlock Holmes matches wits with Irene Adler in the film, A Scandal in Bohemia (1984).  The one-hour episode from the TV series, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” will play on Tuesday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.  This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Library and is part of the Milton Reads special events.

A Scandal in Bohemia stars Jeremy Brett, David Burke and Gayle Hunnicutt and was directed by Paul Annett. Sherlock Holmes finds himself evenly matched when he is employed by the King of Bohemia to retrieve an indiscreet photograph from the American actress and singer, Irene Adler.

This film series is part of Milton Reads, which chose The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for the entire town to read as a literary project, along with enjoying related events throughout the summer and fall.

Mystery movies marathon!

It’s an all-day marathon of mystery movies on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Keys Community Room (lower level) of the Milton Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.  The free event is part of the Milton Reads project to get the entire community reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes or one of its stories, such as “The Speckled Band.”

9:30-10:00 a.m. It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown (1974) Starring the Peanuts cast. 24 min. When Woodstock’s nest mysteriously disappears, Snoopy plays detective in order to find it.
10:15-11:15 am The Red-Headed League (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Season 2, Episode 5) starring Jeremy Brett. What seems at first to be a harmless prank played upon a redheaded man is soon revealed to be much more: a sinister scheme devised by
the Napoleon of Crime. 60 min.

11:30 a.m. -1:05 p.m. Bring your lunch to the library!! Clue (1985) starring Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn. Six guests are invited to a strange house and must cooperate with the staff to solve a murder mystery. 94 min.

1:20 – 2:45 p.m.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and his companion Doctor Watson as they attempt to foil their archenemy Professor Moriarty who plots to commit the theft of the (19th) century, the theft of the Crown Jewels. 85 min.
3:00 p.m. – 4:20 p.m. The Great Mouse Detective (1986).  Basil, the Rodent Sherlock Holmes, invietigates the kidnapping of a toy maker and uncovers its link to his archenemy Professor Ratigan.

4:30 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. The Woman in Green (1946) with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Sherlock investigates the murder of 4 young women – Scotland Yard suspects a madman, but Holmes believes the killings are part of a diabolical plot.
6:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.
The Speckled Band (1984) starring Jeremy Brett. (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Season 1, Episode 6) A young woman asks for Holmes’ help when her ill-tempered stepfather moves her into the same room where her sister died under mysterious circumstances. 60 min.

Dr. Deb Walters solo kayaking 2500 miles

In mid-July Dr. Deborah Walters, a 63-year-old grandmother, launched her solo kayak trip, 2,500 miles from Maine to Guatemala. Ms. Walters is raising awareness for Safe Passage, an education program that has changed the lives of the children and families who live within the teeming garbage dumps of Guatemala City.  Her talk and power point presentation will share her expeditions and her experiences. Come and be inspired!

She lands in Pleasure Bay in South Boston and will speak at the Milton Public Library on Thursday, August 7 from 7-8 pm in the Keys Community Room, lower level, of the Milton Public Library at 476 Canton Avenue in Milton.
