Okay, here we are, as I type, 10 days before an election that could have dangerous results. That is, if the Republican nominee was to win the election. Yesterday, the FBI director James Comey revealed that there could be more emails that could have implications on the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private server.
I really don’t believe Comey did this because of any partisan motives. He would probably have done the same thing if it had been a Republican in a similar situation. Of course, Comey is himself a Republican, kept on by President Obama as the director of the agency. Comey is probably bending over backwards trying to be fair, and it was probably a tough decision for him and his advisers. Having said that, the whole situation shows the perils of keeping somebody from the opposing party on in a new administration. I would guess Obama kept Comey on as a visible gesture to the Republicans that he intends to make his appointments on merit, and not on their political affiliation. I think that it is possible that this backfired on Obama. He went into office naively thinking that he could appease the Repubs by making moves to the center. He kept Defense Secretary Bob Gates on as well, and Gates ended up writing a tell-all book critical of Obama. The problem is that, if you keep a holdover from an opposition party, they don’t feel any loyalty to the administration they are serving, and they will think of themselves and their fortunes and/or career first. Of course, that could happen anyway, but this scenario makes it more likely.
In the end, all President Obama’s efforts to appease the Repubs only emboldened them. Their philosophy was, and is, what is mine is mine and what is yours is negotiable. They were never going to meet our President halfway, or even one-quarter of the way. So, while Director Comey didn’t try to mess with the election, he wasn’t inclined to support his superiors of the opposing party either. So, in any close call, Comey would, maybe not even realizing it, make a decision that favors his own political affiliation. Similar to the Supreme Court in that way, perhaps.
I highly doubt that this new batch of emails will be worth anything at all. It just gives Trump a new platform to spout vicious nonsense about. It behooves Comey to very, very quickly move to show what these emails are about. to stop the demagoguery. If he does not do that, he is no better than any other traitor to his government.
