When you’re a kid, the end of summer means the beginning of school.\u00a0 When you’re an adult it means the beginning of getting stuck behind school buses, boots being on sale and the return of pumpkin EVERYTHING (not that I mind).\u00a0 For a derby person, the end of summer brings a sigh of relief; fewer regional events to try to be involved in, bouting slows down and you’re less likely to be practicing in a sweatbox.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A lot of leagues take breaks in the summer for various reasons.\u00a0 Shoreline takes a breather because it’s the time of the annual Galaxy floor resurfacing.\u00a0 When we come back, there will be a shiny yellow track waiting for us and we’ll Sharpie out the track borders yet again.\u00a0 It’s basically a ritual at this point and we’re lucky to practice somewhere that we can leave a track on the floor so I’m not complaining.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some leagues use the summer to\u00a0start their home team season.\u00a0 Home teams are teams made of skaters inside the same league, so instead of playing skaters in other leagues, teams are formed and everyone plays eachother and eventually there’s a championship.\u00a0 Home team bouts are usually some of the most even and exciting bouts you can see so if you get a chance to watch a Connecticut Rollergirls or Providence Roller Derby home bout, go for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Unfortunately Shoreline doesn’t have the numbers to have a home season this year, but we’ve got a bout coming up too.\u00a0 On September 6th we have our last doubleheader of the travel season.\u00a0 Strong Island\u00a0Derby Revolution\u00a0is coming to play us and then there will be a men’s bout between the Connecticut Death Quads and Mass Maelstrom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
We will be doing a school supply drive to help out the local United Way.\u00a0 Since the food drive went well, it seems like an easy way\u00a0to spread some derby love.\u00a0 If you donate something you’ll get a ticket for our special raffle.\u00a0Not everyone has money to spend on school supplies so whatever you bring will help someone out.\u00a0 For my part, I’ll drop a Grumpy Cat notebook or 2 in the box and hope to win a raffle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
